View Full Version : DirectX 11 gaming: Who plays? :D

Well, with the recent demise of my HD4850 1GB, I decided to leap balls first into the DX11 crowd and picked up an HD6850 1GB on Friday.

Quick specs:

C2D E8400 @ 3.0 GHz (aka stock)
Asus P5Q-E
4 GB OCZ Gold DDR2-800 @ stock
HIS HD6850 1GB @ 2560x1600

So, now that I've listed all this technical stuff, why am I posting this here? Well, DX11 has opened up some killer gaming for me, and I am absolutely floored by the perfomance this little video card chucks out. As in, my 4850 was having problems running DiRT2 in DX10 mode with no eyecandy, yet the 6850 looks at it, shrugs, and asks if I could possibly throw more at it? XD (I'm running it with DX11, 4xMSAA, 16xAF, all settings to max)

I wish I had a screenshot of the game in DX10 mode on the 4850, but on the 6850, I have the following at native res from FRAPS.

Soooooo, what I'm wondering is who plays with DX11, at what res, and what kinds of games you play? (just a social experiment to see how many people are using DX11 cards)

Not that many games out that support DX11.

I picked up Civ V but haven't had a chance to play it much and will definitely be picking up Crysis 2 soon enough.

I'm currently running the GTX570 SC. I'm sure you're well aware of the ability to reflash the 6850 if you choose.

It's the 69xx series you can reflash, unless there's a flash I haven't heard about o_O? and if so, this thing is stupidly powerful as it is right now. Runs 50+ fps 2560x1600 2xAA 8xAF in Crysis 2. And if it comes down to it, I'll probably pick up another 6850 on sale sometime and crossfire. The 68xx and 69xx series apparently have excellent scaling across 2 cards, according to reviews around el interneto.

Then comes the big choice.... keep 1x30 inch, or sell it and go 3x24 inch :D

SLI gtx 480's, koolance waterblocks driving 3 dell 2405fpw or optoma hd7100 on a 120" greywolf.

Ironically enough, I don't game much- torchlight, company of heroes, armed assault.

I reflash my HD4850's all the time to mess around with gpu and memory frequencies. But not in dx11 yet for me. Maybe this year sometime I'll make it in.

Bleh... running DX11 and trying to FRAPS it are two entirely different beasts XD

Nothing special yet.

Metro 2033 was the biggest difference between DX11 and DX9, but its a sucky game.

Civ5 is barely noticeable.

AVP was one of the first to use DX11 and it was really cool for atmosphere, but a disappointment for the campaign. (I bought it to go with my DX11 card when it came out lol)

Dragon age 2 looks better with the high res texture pack, the effects look way better in DX11 mode.

Crysis 2 seems like its DX11 even though its DX9, they say it will get it as a patch but who knows when that will happen.

I honestly think the biggest difference for me so far has been DiRT2. It's literally gone from low quality effects and no AA to full ultra effects, 4xAA (max is 8xAA but the difference really isn't noticeable). The game is STUNNING to play when you have a sunset or dawn rally/raid.

I have a GForce 570, and I went from a 260 (which is pretty beefy on it's own) so other than faster framerate I didn't notice much - it always looked fantastic with everything on.

My big issue is that Dirt 2 crashes randomly (usually after a race) which pissed me off a lot. Found a config tweak that forces DX9 (or maybe 10 I forget) - no more crashing as all, but not quite as pretty. :(

I wish they had races at night or in thunder storms.

I also got a 27 inch but only in 1920x1080 - so again a lot easier to drive high frame rates.

Fan goes to higher mode, goes into the 80s under load which is still green. Assassin's Creed is a good thrasher too, never lags though.

Monitor:

http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX30779(ME).aspx

Current Asus VK278Q 27in Widescreen LED LCD w/ HDMI, DisplayPort, Speakers, Webcam - HD1080 - 1920x1080

Got it for 300 on a price match/sale (ordered the non-webcam one but I got the cam version)

Decently rated, obviously cheaper since it's a TN screen but I GAME with it so I'm looking straight on, and it's great. I have it close too - I can stick my hand out and touch it.

My old 24 was 1920x1200 which I liked since vertical space is gold, but I think that res is going away.

You can spend 1600 on a 27 inch IPS panel which gives you 2560x1440 but to me that's just work for the vid card. Gimme 3 TN panels instead. :) Also watch for response time on some IPS panels, not great for games to be 8 or higher.

While playing Crysis on the highest settings at 1920x1080, it was up near 85C after an hour or so. I changed the fan profile on the EVGA Precision tool and last night it never got above 70C!
