I am sure that I am not the only one to believe that the current VW Beetle is/was the most horrendous thing to come out since the PT Cruiser but what do you guys think of the 3rd Generation of this guy? Personally I think it is leaps and bounds over the New Beetle but nothing beats the original.

I am actually a little excited to see what comes out of this. 2.0T Engine found in the Golf and Jetta, fender sound system, loads of features and all in a car that weighs next to nothing. To add to that, there's a possibility of an R model too (VW's performance lineup) interesting to say the least. Do I see a little Porsche in there? Maybe a Mini killer?

Completely agree. In the third picture it looks like a pt cruiser coupe.

I wouldn't even consider buying one of these for my old lady just because it means that there's a chance I may have to be seen in it one day.

I second this, while I would never go out and buy one I don't think it would be a bad little car to own. The hot hatch market is pretty slim and even though this isn't intended for that market I feel like it will encroach on that scene.

It does feel like a nod to the roots though.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't just skip one of these and buy the golf - it is the same chassis. Every time I look at one all I see is wasted space.

I mean the car is as wide as the outside of the fenders why not make the interior that wide as well - oh ya they did.

i think it looks good from some angles, but i would never drive one due to the connotations associated with the first gen.

i'm a BIG fan of air cooled VWs though. had a '72 super beetle once, actually. that was a SWEET car.
