why did you replace engine? i've never saw a nissan engine blow up. i had a G20, nissan 2L engine with half a million km on it, still works top and didn't burn any oil.

The precat (or pre-catalyst) is a catalytic converter located in the stock exhaust manifold. The QR25DE tends to run a fairly rich air/fuel mixture so it is very likely that not all fuel is being combusted in the cylinders and instead combusted in the precat, which can cause it to break apart into small pieces. These substrate pieces get sucked back into the cylinder and damage the cylinder walls, ultimately causing increased oil consumption. It certainly doesn’t help that the precat sits so close to the engine. To the best of our knowledge all precats from 02-06 are of the same make/construction.

With that said, this happened to the old engine. Previous owner ran the car with low oil and the engine eventually developed a light valve tap which bugged me. I love cars & I needed everything mechanically to be perfect as I had originally planned on driving this vehicle for the long run.

I had the old engine removed and installed a completely NEW engine and replaced the factory exhaust manifold from day one with an aftermarket 4-2-1 header which cancels the pre-cat. This prevents the problem from ever happening again, at the same time improving performance and more specifically bottom to mid range torque. All CC's have also been deleted.

I love this car, & honestly it's difficult for me to part with the SE-R, but as my daily commute includes a lot of stop and go traffic, 6 speed just doesn't seem to make much sense to me anymore. I'm planning on switching over to an automatic transmission for my next car once the right buyer comes along.

Definitely needs to be driven to be fully appreciated.
