do you like your car? are they reliable/cheap to fix?

i found out there could be severe problems with saturn engines and its got me with an uneasy feeling in my stomach and pretty much my debt is so high right now i need just a cheap car. im lookin at a 2 dr neon (95-97) and there are some for sale that cost about $5,000. Also the 150 hp looks more promising than my 124 hp now. So id probably sell my saturn for 7,000 and then dump the 2g's on my visa, futureshop card, and student loan...

Can anybody else give me advice (support this idea or just give it up?)

thanks guys

There are a lot of cars you can get for 5 grand. Why was neon the first car that came to mind? If you look carefully you can probably find a reliable car that should last for a few years for around 3g's.

dont get a neon...keep your eye on the auto trader...there are tons of good deals.......sure neon has a wee bit of power...but its a domestic....shitty resale...shitty reliability...get like a 1993-1995 civic si hatch

Try for a 98 if you can. Or at the least a late model 97. Trim/ build quality is much better. Also find out if the head gasket in the car is the MLS(multi-layer-steel) one.

Look for a 98 R/T if your lucky.

Try not to buy a 95/96 if you can.

That's a few things off the top of my head. PM me if you have specifics you might want answered.

What about an older integra? Not being biased, but the 90-93's have about 140 HP and they are a lot more reliable than a Neon...

true but to many punks think their car is worth 8000 with 220,000+ kms

EDIT: i prefer 2 door coupes (needs back seats cause i drive groups of friends around) and no hatch backs heh.

if you guys know anybody who fit into this field please post the rides (id even say id go as high as 6,000 if its a killer deal... im even thinkin of 240's for good prices and early 90's celica's)

A 95 - 97 has done all the depreciating its going to do. + 1 403gemini

But the power is only 132 - but there are tons of mods for it that are cheap. +1 blackmax

but then again i wouldn't switch what you have for a neon, you can't be in a loan for that much more so you should probably ride it out. Any cars can have problems, hell they say head gaskets are bad on neons so you could be looking at similar problems, just in a different part of the engine. +1 1badPT

In the end feel happy about your ride man, people will say you have all kinds of issues with your car but its not their car. So they have no problems talking crap about it.

Oh yeah the score officially is that we all suck. :closed:

What sort of problems are you worried about 403Gemini? You have the 1.9L DOHC in your SC2 don't you? Besides the block casting method its a decent engine IMO.. just have to make sure u take care of it..
Oh on a side note I replaced the 1.9 DOHC in my moms sl2 due to bearing failure.. but it was a cheap motor to replace :nut:

Yes correct me if Im wrong but werent the older neons notorious for blown headgaskets. I think your debt may only increase 403gemini if you purchase an older neon. Most 200K km imports are just starting to become broken in while most 200K km neons are on their way to the wreckers. Why not stay away from the rip off ricers and go with a nice Camry, acura legend maybe an older 240...lots of reasonable lower mileage imports for 5000 and under

   didn't even notice it...everyone hates neons and honestly if my winter car would have been the first neon i had bought i would never touch one ever again and i'd be the first one to post that they can be pieces of shit. But that's if their not taken care of properly. My other one i bagged the shit out of but i've always maintained it well and in almost 3 years now the only thing that ever broke was an alternator belt :poosie: :poosie: :poosie: Not reliable my ass...it's all in how you maintain your car!

If you want reliability, go for the 4th gen Honda Accord 90-93, or the 3rd Generation Toyota Camry...these cars can be found for under 5 thousand, very reliable (japanese cars of course), drive with all the bells and whistles...

If you are in debt, sell the car, pay it all off and buy a 1500 dollar running beater that's in good shape. You look like you'll go from really bad debt to just bad debt. Plus (I'm assuming you're under 20) you'll save on insurance by not needing collision on a car you own.

Or - if you can afford the payments, ride it out and then enjoy having a payment free car for several years. But it sounds like if you get 1 repair bill that will break the camels back?
