Ha ha ha I'm just making a play on Jason's thread. Actually my first car ever was a Mustang so I've come full circle now I guess. Mustang wasn't the first car on my list for next car but what can I say. I love speed and power and dollar for dollar a better value does not exist. I can't say enough how brilliant the Coyote 5.0L engine is. I haven't been blessed to drive exotics but I can say this engine blows everything out of the water in the $60k price range or less. Power everywhere all the way up to 7000 RPM and a beautiful growl only a Detroit V8 can make. I ordered my 2012 GT with the Brembo package which IMO is a must as the suspension on the regular GT is too soft and floaty. Just a quick review of my likes and dislikes so far;

Likes
-Engine. I love this engine.
-Features. There are lots of options available for these cars I got the Brembo package w/19" wheels, NAV, backup camera, HID's, 3.73 limited slip rear axle, premium leather package and there were more but I find some of the exterior options tacky. There are led's all over the interior and you can change color of gauges and ambient lighting which is pretty cool.
-Fit & finish. It isn't German or Japanese luxury quality but interior is quiet no rattles and most plastics are of decent quality with the exception of the door panels which are hard and cheap feeling. It doesn't have that low rent feeling you get sitting inside an EVO, STI, or Genesis coupe. Paint is a step above Japanese car paint.
-Handling & ride. LRA or not this car handles very well as confirmed by the car mags where it can run with an M3. The only time I really can tell the LRA is there is on the odd unsettled pavement. Ford's done a really good job with the 2011+ Mustangs in the handling department. The ride is very comfortable without being too soft.
-Fun. It's not as performance focused as my EVO was but at the same time it's more fun in a juvenile way. I like to pin the throttle just to hear the engine and I have a feeling rear tires aren't going to last very long.:D

Dislikes
-Transmission. I actually like the 6-speed manual in my car so fat but unfortunately it's a Ford/Getrag joint venture and they are built in China. More than a few 2011 owners have reported grinding in 2nd and 3rd gear so I'm crossing my fingers that the revised clutch assembly in 2012's is the fix.
-Aftermarket wheel choices suck big time. If you are used to picking out wheels for Japanese cars you will soon find that a lot of those manufacturers don't make wheels that fit Mustangs. Your choices are pretty well the same bullet, cobra, shelby wheels you've seen on mustangs for years. Most of the original aftermarket wheels for these cars are usually gaudy, chrome, and just plain ugly to me. The only choices to get a decent wheel that doesn't look dated is to get them made by places like Iforged, Forgestar, etc. and I didn't want to wait so I picked up Ford Racing Boss 302 Laguna Seca (pictured) in 19x9 front and 19x19 rear. One bright side is that wheels for the Mustang are much cheaper than what you typically pay from Japanese wheel manufacturers.
-Seats. The leather looks to be of good quality and I like the color matched stitching but there's no doubt they have been made for fat, middle aged Americans. There's just not enough lateral support and it's a huge downgrade coming from the Recaros in the EVO.
-Floor mats. Really you should see the POS floor mats in these cars. Not even rubber under the carpet. Cheapest I've ever seen.

If anyone is interested in a really fun RWD car with power I highly recommend you test drive a Mustang even if you aren't a Mustang guy (I'm surely not). With the Brembo package it will blow you away with it's speed and handling. It's just such a fun car and people love the Mustang. I get complements daily from everyone it's almost too much attention for me lol.

It's already faster than my EVO so this summer at least I don't plan on any performance mods. Aftermarket is big and lots of OTS tuning is available so that's probably the most I will do with intake and exhaust. Another great part of owning the car is that aftermarket exhausts actually enhance the beautiful sound of the engine rather than just make it loud so that's on the list as well. I will likely have to lower the car but probably not until next year.

I've been thinking about a V6 with a re-gear and suspension/brake upgrade.

The V8 is bonkers and doesnt need anything. Best mustang ever offered since 1972, dollar for dollar.

Ha ha ha. I didn't expect to get a lot of love as beyond isn't the typical Mustang demographic crowd. I try not to get caught up with only looking at certain brands and cars as I'm a car fan above all else. It's hard to find a car that does as much as well as the Mustang. Even the NAV system with Sync does everything better than the top of the line Alpine INAW900 I installed in my EVO. It just has this fun factor that you don't find in too many cars these days that seem to be competent but lack personality or flair.

I personally am not a fan of the color, but still absolutely love the car.

I had a few mustangs, and honestly they were the most fun vehicles I have ever owned. Ford really stepped it up with the new 5.0, it blows everything away. Even the SRT-8 Challenger and Camaro SS don't hold a candle to it. Even though my A4 is quicker, the symphony from the V8 is enough to make you never turn the radio on.

I found the cold air intake was just okay, the best simple mod was the x-pipe cat-delete. It really opens up the throaty V8 sound when you put your foot into it - yet remains perfectly quiet when cruising.

Love your new ride HeavyD.

My crappy pictures don't do the color justice. Grabber Blue is a retro color brought back from the early 70's Mach 1 and Ford recently auctioned a one-of 2012 Grabber Blue Boss 302 Laguna Seca for almost half a million dollars. It's actually a very popular Mustang color in the US. Not worried at all about it affecting resale as in person it's stunning.

Nice review too.....you say the 5.0 is quicker then your tuned EVO was? In a straight line or in the twisty's? Did you ever track or auto-x the EVO, will you in the Mustang? I'm curious what the 5.0 is like compared to the mildly modified EVO's at our elevation.

I've never really liked Mustangs or muscle cars but anyone who bashes this new 5.0 is just being ignorant. They are crazy fast and sound amazing...if they came in AWD I would be very tempted! CTS-V would still be my number 1 choice for American though hehe

Oh yeah, that color is wicked...I don't know what these guys are talking about.

PS to follow up on someone elses question, this thing is faster than your EVO? What was done to your EVO and how much faster does the stang feel?
I promised myself I would get a V8 this time around but I was also set on AWD. When the S4 went back to a boosted 6 I was fresh out of options. I never thought I would own another 4cyl

I meant that even quicker cars (I used mine as an example) aren't as much fun to drive as a stock V8 mustang.

Not starting a pissing contest... with a basic nitrous kit the 5.0 will dismantle my car.

ANYWAYS, back to HeavyD's new purchase... I've been building/pricing 2011 GT's every day for the past month or so haha. I'm really sold that this is going to be my next car, but not for another 18 months or so... I don't like to finance things.

Really? A properly tuned Stage 3 2.7T S4 should be putting out around 480 HP / 500 TQ with sub 4 second 0-60 times. I would think that would demolish a 2011 GT, no?

Wow... 420hp? yeah I wish. haha.

After looking up a little on the 5.0's I really need to retract my statment and sit quietly in the corner for a bit... wow.

The 2010's were around 320 or so HP at the crank. I didn't realize the 2011's 5.0 was putting out 400+HP ..... His bone stock car will walk mine. Even the new V6 seems to be over 300hp now. :nut:

The Stage III turbo in my car is around 350hp at the crank on a B6 A4 or around 280HP at all 4 wheels. I run meth with the race gas tune and that is good for about 320AWHP in the US, but I think here at our altitude I'd be lucky to see 300AWHP.

Redline is correct APR Stage 3 is good for about 280hp, but it does not use the K03/K04's you can use with the Stage 1,2+ tunes it uses a larger eliminator turbo as well.

Stage 3 2.7TT S4 makes my car look like a corolla, so if the new 5.0 is fast enough to beat his car.... I think I will have to stick with chasing V6's

I'm running uni big turbo software. APR is really really good software, problem is they won't sell just the software for Stage III, you gotta buy the entire $6000 turbo kit from them. That being said, not too many 300hp APR cars blow up, but a lot of Uni and Revo ones do.

Don't know anyone running those #'s on anything but Maestro7 or some other custom tune.

Edit. typical 1/4 mile times (for typical stage 3 tunes)

Stage 3 A4 1.8T (GT2871R turbo) 13.6
Stage 3 S4 2.7TT (K04 turbos) 12.1
Stock 5.0 Mustang 12.1

APR's more reliability than power really. Didn't know that about the kit though, I've always just pieced them together myself

I've got a VR now, but I'll ask to see my friends dyno sheet, he's got an 01 1.8T and I'm pretty sure it was 360whp ish, and that was last year (GT28RS) before his new turbo and meth.

sillysod
05-26-2011, 10:10 PM
^^ Then he is no longer stage 3.

I will take your word for it on the dyno sheets, I just know any "out of the box" kits like mine all run what I'm running.

Anything bigger requires completely custom everything -- including software (Maestro7 or similar)

Now they have waaay bigger stuff for the 1.8T audi's

Garrett GT3076R - 400AWHP
Garrett GT3582R - 500AWHP

and there are a couple guys running Precision 6262's

As far as Software goes, he's on Uni's 630cc. I honestly can't think of what the turbo is. It's Precision, but size I'm not sure. (Edit; 5857 I think)

I'm a 2.7T A6 (4000+ lbs) w/ VAST tuning, and VAST tip chip. Stock TQC means I can't launch w/ boost, I need to build it off the line.
5.0 would take me off the line, and I don't think 1/4 mile is enough for me to reel him in, but I like a challenge.

I have to tell you personally, I hate mustangs, and try to make a point of it in most cases.

However, This is one of the better built domestics i have seen in a long time. The 5.0 is strong, the breaks are great, and the short transmission is a blast. I work on these cars daily, and truly don't have a justifiably bad thing to say about it. Great power, and utility for what it is.

Great buy, and congrats on the new car.

just wanted to bump to say something: a buddy of mine has a new 5.0 vert (I've seen the car a few times, didn't realize that it was someone I know). Last night I heard a loud "psssssht" when he shifted and I went  .
then I saw the 'supercharged' script under the 5.0.
Looked up the details on these blower kits- about $7k for 525 (warrantied) HP, and about 300 bucks more to bump it to 624.

all I can say to that is

btw, his is bright red with white stripes- and I say  to the car in general.

It's the GT with the Brembo package and a bunch of other options. I've recently added the Boss 302 front valence which gives the car a more aggressive look.

I love my Japanese pocket rockets but man it feels nice to have that domestic V8 growl at your beck and call.

How about the fact the new Chinese manual tranny is a POS and they're replacing them left, right, and centre for various problems/failures?

i do not see the issue, if they were NOT replacing them, then i would see a problem

i have a mechanic friend at a local dealership and he has only had to pull a single trans out of a new mustang so far.... and that was for a worn clutch

Is the 5.0 much slower at Calgary's altitude vs tests done in car mags?

My 2011 Mustang is a beast. I should be running somewhere in the mid 12's with street tires.

Surprisingly still fast... 13.6 @ 106 on street tires was the fastest I've seen here (damn good at that)

I ran last fall stock automatic with 3.15 gears 13.5 60 foot 2.3 106.89 MPH early October last year. Now with 3.73 gears, suspension, tune, CAI, offroad x-pipe full 3 inch exhaust I should be some where in the 12's.

Really? It was stock?

Last Friday night, there were two of them that were both high 13's/low 14's at 101 to 102mph.

Mustang GT stock tires vary from package. Non-Brembo GT's get crappy PZero Nero allseason tires while Brembo models get the more stick PZero tires.

Hell no my baby sleeps all winter! The way this city shoots the gravel around on these roads I prefer to keep my paint job nice. I just ordered the Eibach sway bar kit with end links and considering buying headers and twin screw supercharger next year.

I winter drive all my cars. No winter beaters for me. I'm not a fan of driving cars I'm not fond of for half the year.

heavyD, did you look at the Boss 302s? On paper, the improvements they made engine-wise sound pretty good. Not just your typical intake & exhaust upgrade. How much more do those things cost over the regular GTs? On US ford website, there is about a 7K diff b/w the GT & Boss and another 7K b/w the Boss and GT500.

Oh and BTW, sweet ride. Really love the color.

Buying all the bolt ons is easy to hide the money from the wife the money it costs for a supercharger man I will have to butter her up this winter can't hide a purchase like that from her.

Boss is sweet and performs better than the M3 but it's up there in price and you aren't going to get a deal on one as most dealers are asking above window sticker pricing.

Sweet car. The V6 is no slouch and in fact performs better than the old 4.6L V8. These cars are such nice cruisers.

I've rented '11 Mustangs twice, both V6 autos. Fell in love with the first one, then had a vert in Maui and fell in love again. Some of my best memories of Maui are just driving.

It's cool to buy Mustangs again.:bigpimp: They really are solid cars for the money and the performance/dollar factor on all trim levels is high.
