Lately I've had a keen eye on a diesel truck. Which production years of the Powerstroke should I avoid? And what is expected for fuel economy on these? Ford doesn't seem to specify on their website.

If this means youre selling the 4runner for a superduty are you going to sell the 240 for a 5.0 mustang?

I wanted a powerstroke but just could not bring myself to buy one.

I know 4 people that have had to spend between 6 and 9k doing headgaskets & other stuff. (cab has to come off chassis to do the work)

I ended up getting a duramax. Super happy so far with the chev.

I know a lot of the Ford guys say the 6.4 is even worse than the 6.0s were, but on my experiences I'd have no problem with an 08-10 6.4. Based on those same experiences I'd avoid an 03-07 6.0. But that's me.

As far as mileage is concerned, no one in the history of the planet has ever bought a Ford diesel for good mileage. My family has or does have an 85 6.9, a 95 7.3, a 97 7.3, an 06 6.0, two 08 6.4s, and a 10 6.4. I don't think any of them have ever done better than maybe 17mpg, and that's on the highway.

99-03 7.3's are a good bet.A reliable unit, but They are way underpowered for their size and get awful fuel economy. Very noisy too.

05-07 6.0l The best years for this engine, Avoid the 03-04's. Decent power, and expect about 16-17mpg hwy and 12 in the city. Try to find a bone stock unit that has not been chipped, or a chipped truck with upgrade's like studded heads.

I hear to avoid the 6.4 altogether (08-11), they get the worst fuel economy and are starting to become troublesome as they age. They are also even more expencive to fix than the 6.0 or 7.3.

Yeah, avoid the 03-04 6.0's.
But make sure you really need a diesel. They cost more up front, they cost more to maintain, and if something does go wrong, they cost a lot to repair. Not to mention, you won't get the mileage you think with them, and diesel fuel is not cheap anymore.

The superduty with the 5.4 is slow, but it'll haul a hell of a big load if you don't mind the downshifts on the hills and some high RPM. The V10 is even better, but still not fast.

What are you planning on hauling?

Get a newer Super Duty. That way you'll never forget you have one. Doesn't it say Super Duty about 12 times on the thing. Horrible styling IMO. We get it...it's a Super Duty

Good advice here, my friends a mechanic who mostly works on diesels and when I was looking at one his advice was: if it stops running and has to get towed to a garage, generally at least 2k$ to get it running again.

I think the Superduty platform itself is great, but the early powerstroke's love to stretch headbolts... and that is not a cheap fix. Generally regarded as the least reliable "big 3" diesel.

The V10 superduty is great for towing, and generally pretty cheap to acquire. The downside it the gas mileage... like 11mpg city 13 highway.

I know a guy that owns an 03 6.0 .... probably the biggest piece of trash I have ever seen built out of steel.

As everyone has said. 05-06 6.0 is your best option if you insist on getting a ford. maintenance and parts/labour wise you are better off with a duramax or cummins.
Any monkey who does regular maintenace can keep a cummins alive longer than the body of the vehicle.

Love my later generation 6.0L. Went in with full knowledge the weak points and immediately resolved them. It's been awesome. Do not let anyone scare you away from that motor, especially 05-06. Keep in mind all the big 3 diesels have issues. Do your research! You WILL have to fix the problems if you expect a reliable motor. Don't worry, they're not big fixes either, or particularly costly.
