Thanks guys.

Steve, I'm sure my son would enjoy doing your daughter at some point in the future.

My advice for delivery:

- Get her the Epidural.
- Cold towels are good for you and her.
- Be prepared for what a placenta looks like.
- Bring lots of energy drinks.

1. She's still undecided on the epidural...we'll see how it goes.

2. sounds good

3. I'm staying up near her shoulders...I don't wanna scar myself for life

4. She's anti energy drink...I think we're SOL on that one.

He's got both at the moment. That is indeed the 135L. Going from the D3s to the 1DIV is odd, all the buttons are strange, and I didn't like the way the focus worked, but it did make a nice looking final product IMO. Don't think I would switch. But it was interesting to play around with for a few minutes.

I think the words Steve used were, "I could shoot canon".

I am still shooting both Nikon and Canon though until I get an opportunity to test the 1D out at sporting events. I figure I'll get a few looks from the other photographers at spruce meadows when they see a Nikon D3s on one shoulder and a 1D Mark IV on the other.

D3s with a 200-400 F4 VRII attached
1D Mark IV with 200mm F2.8L and a 400mm F4 DO

The pinched nerve really sucks. Start hand holding heavy glass for any decent amount of time and you get numbness in three fingers on the right hand and some relatively harsh pain in the right elbow.

Two of Canon's lenses in particular sparked my interest, the 200mm F2.8 and the 400mm F4 DO. I had the chance to try the 400mm F4 DO and absolutely love the lens. Weighs 3.5 lbs or around the same as the 70-200, sharp and very compact.

My only problem right now is I lack faith in the 1D AF system until I get a chance to fully use it for a weekend of work at Spruce meadows. Everything is reversed but the camera does have advantage over the D3s. The D3s has advantages over the 1D Mark IV. It's basically the same thing but all the controls are wacky.

That was the 135mm above. Brilliant lens. Only if Nikon had the 135mm replacement out now. I ended up buying Canon goodies since I found Nikon extremely lacking in the 85mm to 200mm area. You know lenses that are optically fantastic with an AF speed that is fast.

Taken with said 135mm F2L on the 1D Mark IV...

Oh an for the record I'm not back on here. I stay silent. It's like I'm not here. I should almost kiss Rage. Being banned was good for business. Almost made me consider buying ad space if the price was more within range.

I "could" but I wouldn't :poosie: the resale on D3s's right now is off the charts ridiculous, I could sell it for almost what I paid for it, same with all my glass, would be easy to switch, but I love my D3s, I'm good :D

Dave you could be one of the rare occasions when I actually here somebody that likes the 50mm 1.2L. That lens get a lot of serious hate from pros.

Steve don't you love crop bodies! They are just so much fun to play with. I picked up a 7D to go with the two 1D bodies I bought. I'll be using it for a portable photo booth at weddings this year.

Somewhat surprised at it's ISO capabilities considering the negative crap I've read online...

Btw you need another box to complete the family. Or at least you will very soon.

Taken with said 7D at ISO 1600. I'm finding ISO 1600 is fairly good and then at 3200 it's noisy as all fawk. Well at least to me it is. I've gotten so used to clean images at 6400 that it's hard to look at anything else.

You really should try the 85mm 1.2L II then. It's AF is slower than just about anything but it's truly a remarkable lens. The 50mm 1.2L is simply dying to be re-designed to something that's actually worth that kind of money.

You also realize the problem with shooting F1.2 on a Canon full frame right? Unless you are using a 1Ds it's a serious pain to get accurate focus.

I rented a 5D Mark II for a week and realized it wasn't for me. I think the next few canon bodies we'll see will have an AF system that actually works at least.

A "new" 5D as in a 5D mkII?

No a new 5d Classic. Had under 500 actuations and oem screen film on it still. I'd have picked up the mark 2, but I really don't have a use for HD Video yet and I'm not making huge gallery sized prints and don't require 21mp either so I'm using the extra ~800 bucks to buy some new glass, just undecided. 16-35 seems like a good candidate but who knows.

I think I'll hold onto this 5D For the year and upgrade again in the winter. I love it alot more than my 1D, but there are a few features I miss such as good autofocus, and fps. I've been looking to get a 1ds markIII so that I can have the best of both worlds.

This 5Dc is friggin' SLOW so it will be interesting to see how I do with it on my track days.

I see...the 1DIIIs is a good body for sure...as long as you get the newer versions of it (I believe there's a blue dot on the serial number plate) before that they had auto focus issues as well.

I'm just in the process of trying to reconfigure my camera bag around having two bodies for the race weekend...it's tricky...lol.

The 1Ds Mark III is either fabulous or a ticking time bomb and I'd recommend avoiding it at all costs. New, used, old, whatever.

I went through three of those bodies in no less than a year all of which had different issues and they kept giving me new bodies. First had spotty AF, the second had the shutter die within the first two weeks of life and the third and final body had the main electrical board short out.

When they work though they take great photos lol. That and it's noisier than both the 5D and 5D Mark II. The 5D is a really nice camera overall.

You didn't buy the cheap 5D they had at TCS did you? They were offering a in-store warranty on it but I'm pretty sure the shutter on that body was dying.

The guy selling was an older gentleman and he bought it to try and make a side business offering real estate photography. He didn't get very far, the camera didn't even have finger prints on it.

I got a nice 8mm sigma fisheye with it too that I'm trying to sell, amazing lens but it's alot better on 1.3 or 1.6.

Anyways, we should probably make a general photo chat thread or stop posting in this one lol, there is hardly any photos on this page.

Kevin are you back to Canon due to back problem or something? Just curious. Good to see you "back"

Not necessarily a back problem. Using big heavy lenses such as the 200mm F2 and 200-400 F4 extensively for 10+ hours for 5-6 days straight caused me to have a pinched nerve in my right elbow. Basically makes me lose sensation in three of my fingers and quite a bit of pain in the elbow itself.

Occupational therapist basically told me I had to limit what I was using in terms of weight. The major issue with Nikon was the serious lack of glass between the 85mm and 200mm range.

They have a lot of older lenses that while they are great lenses tend to be slow to focus or have accuracy issues. At the end of the day lenses such as the 135mm F2, and 200mm F2.8L and the 400mm F4 DO were just about perfect in terms of what I needed.

I'm still holding on to my one D3s with a 200-400 F4 VRII. So I'm not completely switched and it'll honestly likely stay that way. I love the 200-400 VRII and so long as I tripod it everything is fine.

the first three she looks totally disinterested and the lighting is pretty harsh...to obvious where the light falls off, and where the light is coming from.

The fourth one you've still got major lighting issues, and is whatever that is going across the middle of the image intentional? if so it's not working for you.

her disinterested look likely because she is new to modeling.

I can take the blunt critique, but it isn't much help if you don't give some kind of incite of how to make it better, rather then just point out the flaws, point out how to fix the flaws.

the last one I repositioned a light to get rid of that, but for some reason I didn't mind it, so I used the shot.

Go4Long

you need to reposition the light to give a more balanced look...if you're shooting outdoors and using one light, look at where the shadows from the natural light are falling, and try to figure out a good way to position your light to compliment that. harsh shadows are unflattering in MOST situations, even if it takes a couple test shots of moving the light around trying to get it just right that's going to get you much better results.

think of the sun as your key light, and your flash as fill, rather than just trying to over power the sun and make her properly exposed and the background 2 stops(ish) under. You've gone to the trouble to pick a location that will draw some interest to the scene with the railway tracks, so keep them part of the scene instead of leaving them in shadow and flat...

make sense?

Hate to say it, but these shots would most likely have looked better without a flash at all...maybe just a reflector for fill.

and as for the looks...show her on the camera what her look is doing, point out to her that she looks bored and disinterested, even start up some banter with her between shots, or even while you're shooting, get her smiling, and get her to work with you to make a better picture. The best models still won't look their best without at least being comfortable with the person they're working with.

Were they shot at dusk? It's hard to light people up at night without it looking like they're in a spotlight. The only way I've seen it done well is if there's some light sources in the photo (i.e. street lamps, bright lights in background) that you can get a similar EV level to the subject.

If they weren't shot at dusk, you just need to balance your light a little more, meaning tone it down on the model and get a better exposure on the background.

I wouldn't take critiquing from Go4Long when it comes to modelling shoots.

The best advice for this type of shoot would be from AccentAE86 on this forum.

the latter pics in that set there was very little natural light, compared to the first few, we had to stop for rain to pass and in that time usable natural light was mostly gone.

it does make sense and I'll try and put some of it to practice next time around

Next time don't stop in the rain, keep shooting in the rain. Tell her to suck it up. Shots in the rain look bloody brilliant.

During twilight lighting you can do some fabulous shots if you are using some properly direct soft light at fairly low output. For me it may be easy to say as I'll bump the ISO to 6400 or 12800 to light the scene fairly well and then often add a really small amount of light.

Everybody tends to do things differently though and often in photography there is no right or wrong answer but quite simply what works for you and that is all that matters.

For me the lighting is just slightly harsh in the photos.

I probably could have set up a reflector to bounce back from the other side, and I wasn't worried about her in the rain, it was my lighting. LOL. they were all shot at ISO200, so I did have room to bump it up and could have dialed back the flash power. I know very little about lighting and so I just give it a try and see what I can figure out. then see what advice I get. then try out as much as it as I remember the next time.

This is the best way to learn. Trial and error will tell you what works and what doesn't. Quite often the very best professionals in the world have no formal training or education in photography. They just go out, shoot, learn and improve until they master it.
