Excessive speed appears to be the cause of a Wednesday afternoon accident in S.E. Calgary that send a 17-year old male to hospital with serious injuries, according to police investigators.

The single vehicle collision occurred around 4:05 p.m. in the 300 block of Shawville Boulevard S.E.

A 2000 Honda Prelude with five occupants was southbound on Shawville Boulevard S.E. The Honda failed to stay on the road as it curved 90 degrees to the left. The Honda went off the road to the right, mounted a cement barrier and careened back onto the roadway.

The undercarriage of the Honda was ripped open from impacting the barrier.

All occupants were uninjured except for one 17-year old male passenger in the backseat who sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries as a result of the collision.

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating the incident.
