View Full Version : Fast cars with cargo space

06-10-2011, 03:15 PM
My lease on my truck is just about up, time to find something new. Unfortunately my criteria seem to be mutually exclusive. I'm looking for something that
- is fast and fun to drive
- has a lot of cargo space. doesn't have to be enclosed.

my third criteria, which disqualifies some of the obvious choices that fit options 1 and 2 is

- can't be ugly as sin (hence, no STi 5 door or Magnum SRT-8)

is there something I'm missing? Really the best option I can think of would be if GM made a new El Camino, except they never will. I'm not opposed to 5 doors per se, because I actually like how the Audi A3 looks, but I don't know much about how it drives.

We don't get the B8 Audi S4 Avant here, but you can pick up a used B7 Audi S4 Avant.

340hp, 6 speed manual, wagon. It was my thought as well!

What car should i buy!!?!?!?, must be fast and have trunk. Budget apparently irrelevant !!!

Buy a ferrari with a cargo trailer

budget is about $2.40 plus a tim hortons gift card

don't see how I could make it any more clear. depending on if I can buy the car new or not changes the price. used I won't spend as much, putting the Jeep SRT8 out of my price range. new.. I can afford quite a bit

the X1 is about as ugly as most new small BMWs imo, can't stand that thing. the X3 is nice though, its still on the list.. not a fan of BMW's 328 wagon.

the Audis are nice but I'm not quite sure if my taste is discerning enough to justify the price difference between a S4 and, say, a hopped up Golf

not crazy fast. like a V6 Genesis coupe that could haul shit in the back. easy modability is a plus, so I have a preference for turbo cars or north american V8s

don't like the benz or the audi, the BMW X5 is too much and I'd prefer something lower to the ground.

that said though, the Raptor is super tempting, been trying to line up a test drive on one.. the cost of gas for it and past bad experiences with Fords are working against it. but if I can't find a car that fits, it'd be what I'd go with

I like the orange and the blue both, with no decals.

really tho its one of those trucks that looks good in any color. imo Ford knocked it out of the park with that one

as far as getting an old car gets, I thought about that too. an old El Camino with a LS1 swap would get the job done but you have sacrifice a lot of modern conveniences to do it.

plus I just used the term El Camino because people would recognize it. when I think modern Caminos, I think the Pontiac G8 ute concept they showed a few years back but never built

I'm looking for the exact same vehicle criteria right now. Here's what I have 'er narrowed down to.

New Caddilac CTS-V Wagon - Won't be available till Sept or Oct, 2011's all sold out (they only made 10 or something stupid).

New BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo - Haven't driven one or seen one in person yet.

Used ML63 - Surprisingly, these things go for 40-50k. Gotta love SUV depreciation.

Used E55 Wagon - I drove one of these years ago and absolutely love it. Maintenance on that 5.4L Supercharged V8 can get a little pricey tho. Cheap entry price.

Used R63 "Minivan" - There's apparently only 5 of these in Canada and 30 in the US, they never sold well at all. I guess there's almost no market for a 500hp minivan haha. Some guy in the US with one absolutely loves it.

Why not stay with a truck? Buy a 4 yr old Chev with a 6.0L and a $4k turbo kit and enjoy 700 hp and better than stock mileage. And spend half of what a so called 'fast' new car will cost. Domestic V8s will always be the best performance dollar for dollar.

all above my price range unfortunately although some of those are super nice.. I would sacrifice a lot to get a ML63. even one of those R63s would be sweet! hilarious concept, it'd be like having a real life version of that formula one van from Gran Turismo 2 (renault espace F1?)

I can do 50-60k on a new car so iirc that limits me to 3 series level stuff.

the new Audi route seems like the best bet right now
like, holy shit

I'd say go test drive a new F-150 Ecoboost. Its definitely got the power you're looking for, plus lots of room and pretty its not ugly by any means.

Plus I'd imagine theres going to be a fair bit of aftermarket support for the new turbo V6's once more people get their hands on them

the SRT8 Jeep is the most obvious choice but they are out of my price range.. plus as much as I usually don't care about mileage because I don't drive that much, less than 10mpg is just retarded

I thought about sedans too but the stuff I usually haul won't fit through most trunk openings, its gotta have a bed or a hatchback.

Used SUV that hasn't been mentioned...Chev Trailblazer SS (over 400 hp and most were AWD).

For a sedan there is also the Pontiac G8 GT or GXP if you can find one.

A couple of years ago Shaganappi took the G8 GT (6.0 L), gave it to Davenport for a little supercharger and it ended up over 500 hp (claimed).

There's always the new Taurus SHO. While it doesn't necessarily exude sexiness, it has lots of bells 'n whistles and the trunk is absoultely HUGE.

Not all that fast (0-060 5.2) out of the 365 HP Ecoboost, but respectable for such a big car.

Ford Flex ecoboost? Some people hate the styling, but it's massive, and kinda quick. 0-60 in seven seconds.

Myself, I think it's a pretty compelling vehicle, and I think the styling is a lot better than the SUV-style vehciles that it's commonly compared against.

Well then, MB has a special on used vehicle finance right now for their 125th Anniversary.

*1.25% financing only available through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services on approved credit for a limited time. Only available on a 36, 48, 60 and 72 month finance term and only applicable to MY 2007-2010 models (less than 140,000 km). Finance example: $20,000 at 1.25%per annum equals $344.03 per month for 60 months. Cost of borrowing is $641.92 for a total of $20,641.92.

Mazda3 does NOT have much cargo space. I own one, and that's the reason I've been trolling this forum with talk of the Flex.
Hell, it doesn't even have much people space, that back seat is very small. Can't fit an adult behind an adult driver.

we have a Mazda3 and the flex. the difference in space is not comparable, even though our flex is a 6 seater config.
the flex is not as fun to drive, but that's not it's niche. it is a roomy, comfy people and stuff mover and has plenty of power on tap if you want to punch it. it doesnt maximize space like a minivan, but provides more than your typical suv, and with handling more like a 4900 lb station wagon.

Do they make the Lancer Ralliart in the sportback? Cool car if so.
Yea, I looked at one at Platinum Mitsu a week or 2 ago. Really cool car. Only worth it if you're paying for it cash.

if I could get that Holden here I would have bought it probably three years ago  they almost did bring it over as a Pontiac.

The SSR though.. that thing is ugly as fuck. I could not drive something that hideous.

Pontiac did something close to that Holden, the G8 GXP. There weren't very many of them but they came with a 6.2 L

I am in a similar boat, although less in definite need of sizable cargo space and AWD is mandatory. I don't haul things every day, but I'm fed up with the WRX sedan not being able to fit anything in it.

My budget is in the $40-50k range. If I decide I want more room, it seems the X3 and Infiniti EX35 fit best. I'm not against an Outback or Forrester, but they're low on power and I'm annoyed at an expensive emissions-related CEL I'm dealing with on the WRX. For mid-size cars, will give the S4, G37x, is350 AWD, TL AWD, and maybe Taurus SHO a go as well.

Oddly I think this is one area where there is a gap in the North American market, as I can't find one vehicle that really fits all of my needs. Although an Audi S4 avant would be perfect. I don't mind going a year or 2 old, but it seems cars don't really drop in price until 3 or 4 years out when the lease returns come in, and at that point they're not much newer than my existing 2006.

I looked into the GXPs, but all the G8s seem to be collectables now. They are really holding their value.. even still I don't think their trunk opening would be big enough to accomodate what I want to haul.

There are a lot of big gaps in the market right now imo.

When it comes down to it the STi would be exactly what I'm looking for, but Subaru has an absolutely awful track record when it comes to making cars that look good. The STi hatch is incredibly ugly... unless you get it in black with a bright set of rims so your eye is drawn away from how lumpy and fucked up looking the body is. I've been seeing the sedans around lately too, and they aren't any better. They cost $45k but look like those Kia knockoffs that you can get for $15.

I was just coming to post "fuck it"

I give up, no point in finding a vehicle that does both because you make too many compromises. so I'm gettin a genesis coupe, loved em ever since I first saw one, and then I'll mooch off people with trucks for the times I need to haul stuff

Yeah, pretty cheap to rent trucks for a couple weekends a year if you are moving building materials.
