Salary Cap up to $64M
Salary Floor up to $48M

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369480

With the National Hockey League Entry Draft less than a week away and the potential for trades escalating this week and next with the free agency period looming, the salary cap will be going up by nearly $5 million next season.

Clubs and agents are being told next year's salary cap will be set at an upper limit of $64 million with a floor of $48 million.

During the 2010-11 season, the salary cap had an upper limit of $59.4 million.

The league's cap - entering its seven season under the current collective bargaining agreement - has risen every year since the end of the NHL lockout when the cap was set at $39-million.

Yes! Now the Flames can unload some of their undesirable contracts to cheap teams for draft picks!!

Great news about the cap. I mean, most contending teams will probably use the extra cap as well - making them proportionately better... but it still means the ability for all teams to add a much-needed puzzle piece.

I think Vancouver should go after a power forward to both play with and help protect the Sedins.

Kesler can play centre and Henrik can play the wing. Now, you'll just need a veteran second line centre like Matt Stajan. :D

Except the increased cap doesn't make them better players. Somehow I don't see people knocking on Feaster's door and saying, you still got Stajan/Hagman/Kotalik? We wanted them sooooo bad, but couldn't fit them into the budget last year!

Kloubek
06-20-2011, 08:50 AM
Yeah, Stajan would be a perfect fit!

Nah... Sedins stay where they are. Drop Burrows down to the 2nd line (where he truly belongs) and add a big forward like Backes, Byfuglien, Stewart, Clowe, Hartnell, etc.

This is actually not the place for such talk though - I'll start a new Canucks thread. Hopefully void of riot talk.

My point is that teams with already a low cap hit needs to reach the floor in order to compete. Teams like NYI, Florida, Colorado, etc. will need to add salary.

Cup this year? Hmm.... I'm gonna say San Jose. They make one more playoff run before people start jumping in desperation. Thornton isn't getting any younger, he's still got talent but getting old, he needs to pull a Hossa, only get it right the first time.

Of course, I'll say that the Jets make it into the playoffs, and hopefully past the first round.

Lidstrom back for another year.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369487

LIDSTROM TO RETURN WITH RED WINGS FOR 20TH SEASON

DETROIT -- Nicklas Lidstrom is coming back for a 20th season with the Detroit Red Wings, agreeing to a one-year deal worth US$6.2 million.

"The reason it took so long was I wanted to make sure I found the motivation," the 41-year-old Lidstrom said Monday on a conference call.

Lidstrom is a Norris Trophy finalist for the 11th time in 13 seasons. If he wins the award for being the NHL's top defenceman -- it would be his seventh -- on Wednesday, he will match Doug Harvey's total and trail Bobby Orr's record by only one.

He is also a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and the Mark Messier Leadership Award.

The soft-spoken Swede leads with his actions.

He had 62 points last season -- surpassing his production from each of the previous two years -- to rank second among NHL defenceman and to become the first 40-year-old defenceman with 60-plus points in an NHL season.

"Nick had a tremendous years and continues to be one of the elite defenceman in the game," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland.

Lidstrom's six-foot-two, 190-pound body is chiseled thanks to a year-round workout that includes exercise before practice and after games along with a sensible diet that includes only occasional slices of pizza and fast food.

The four-time Stanley Cup champion decided last summer to put retirement on hold, pausing only because his oldest son started school in Sweden last autumn, and signed a $6.2 million, one-year deal.

Next season, he will lead a defensive corps that includes Niklas Kronwall and Brad Stuart and a roster that should give the team a shot to earn a spot in a 20th straight post-season berth -- a streak that started when Lidstrom was a rookie.

The Red Wings will attempt to acquire a standout defenceman this off-season with at least some of the $6 million freed up when Brian Rafalski retired last month with a year left on his contract.

In June 2011 Mark Cuban spent $90,000 on a 15 liter bottle (20 regular sized bottles) of Armand de Brignac in celebration of the the Dallas Mavericks' NBA Championship. A week later, the Boston Bruins "one-upped" the Mavericks' celebration by purchasing a 30 liter bottle of Ace of Spades "Midas" for $100,000. At the time of the purchases, the Midas bottle was one of six bottles in the world.

Benny

Vokoun is a good goalie, and he would have played hard for Philly. Instead they give away Carter AND Richards in order to sign Bryz for so long at so much. I think it was a stupid idea. They still have good guys, but it's generally a silly plan to trade away your two BEST players in order to sign a good goalie to a LONG contract. Regardless, I think they're gonna be crappy for a couple years then really turn it on. Really banking on Bryz though.

Quizzes
06-23-2011, 06:27 PM
Philly is a great team that only needs a GOOD goalie, not a franchise type paying franchise dollars. Someone like Vokoun can probably get them where they needed to be. It's tough to bank on a goalie who just crapped the bed in the most recent playoffs.

So... what happens to Bobrovsky? I guess he won't be starting for another 9 years when Bryz's contract expires.

You don't think it's a dick move to waive HIS NTC to go to another team when he has no intentions of signing there?

He just doesn't want teams to trade assets for his rights when he has already made his mind up to test the market. Dallas is not getting "screwed" as they don't want him anyway and teams that trade for him aren't given any false hope of him signing because he decided to waive his NTC in a trade.

Not sure why this makes him a bad guy.

That could be a fairly stacked offense. But we need defense. I don't want to see us give up too much for Richards, but seeing the feeding frenzy that's going on for him any contract he signs is going to be a monster.

Randy Jones just got signed to the Jets - 1 yr deal for just over 1m

He's an OK defence man, but I'm excited cause we went to the same high school and grew up in the same small town. I think he's the only hockey player out of my hometown (10k people) to make it to the NHL.

Vokoun was a great signing for the Caps, only 1.5M too. They're winning the cup!
