The purpose of tilt test is to see if fluids come out and how many lateral G's the car can sustain. We test up to 60 degrees but that was easily approaching 75-80 degrees before he came off.

Also, this is why he has to be strapped in and wearing his helmet.

did they really think a 1" ratchet strap was going to catch it?

edit: ratchet strap held. eye bolt through fiberglass didn't.

Hah, funny, I was standing beside the cameraman for this. Our team was going into the design judging bay beside the tilt table and I walked up just as the thing pitched over. There were 3 separate instances that day where the safety strap was either insecurely attached or forgotten entirely.
