...Because race car. :D

No, but seriously, it's the Canada day weekend man. One of the deadliest, if not the deadliest weekends of the year. CPS and RCMP are out there to "prevent" accidents from happening, while making a few bucks writing speeding tickets on the side.

[edit] Can't find in on the interwebz, but car vs pedestrian (stumbled into traffic) .

FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION

By Duty Inspector Paul StaceyJuly 02, 2011 03:06 AMCategory: Police, Public Safety

On Friday, 2011 July 1, at 11:55pm, a 42 year old male pedestrian was walking along Highway #1, approximately one kilometre west of Valley Ridge Boulevard NW.

The man stumbled out into the westbound travel lanes of the highway and was narrowly missed by a vehicle travelling in that direction. A second vehicle, a 2004 Volkswagen Golf with four occupants, was not able to avoid the man and struck him. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the occupants of the vehicle were injured.

Alcohol and speed are not considered factors relative to the vehicle and its occupants, however, alcohol may have played a role with respect to the pedestrian.

The Calgary Police Traffic Section was called in to investigate the collision, and as a result, the westbound lanes of Highway #1 were closed for approximately 4 1/2 hours while officers processed the scene for evidence.

Yesterday there was a medical emergency or something going westbound after Calaway Park, and traffic was backed up to Stoney!

I'm glad I went out on 1A.

Also explained why 1A was so busy.

Did you know, you are 7 times more likely to die while being drunk and walking, then being drunk and driving? This is calculated at how many deaths per mile walking vs. driving.... the more you know.

So I guess they'll be putting up a sign along the highway to watch for pedestrians on this section as well...

To serve and collect. The business of policing.
