Today people steal Angry Birds and music. In the not so distant future, people will be downloading scans of products illegally and printing them at home :)

Thingiverse (http://www.thingiverse.com) is pretty much the forerunner of that, for the Makerbot/Reprap crowd.

(As cool as the scanner thing is, it was pretty obvious the wrench they printed was a stock model and not a copy of the one they scanned. The Makerbot crowd has manged to create a similar tool from nothing but a laser pointer and a Playstation 3 Eye Camera)

I have one at work but it doesn't print in color. We use it instead of ordering expensive prototypes (paperweights).

Really handy.

that's pretty neat!

How heavy or rigid is the object?

Mine uses plaster though. You get it printed and it comes out breakable, tolerances are pretty good. You add hardener to it and it solidifies. I've actually used a piece in one of our downhole tools as I was in a pinch.

This will revolutionize manufacturing/shipping for sure. I wonder what kind of file sizes it would send over networks to a distant printer? :dunno:

F1 has been doing rapid prototyping for over a decade now. In fact, they're able not only to do rapid prototyping (ie for wind tunnel tests, fitment confirmation, etc), they're able to do rapid manufacturing too with much stronger materials.

At the beginning of the year, McLaren had to redesign their diffuser from scratch because their original design was really bad in testing. They needed it at the first race but it would take a week to properly lay it out in CF. So they used their "3d rapid manufacturing printer" to make the entire diffuser in titanium so they could bring it to the race a day after wind tunnel tests. It helped the team bring over a second a lap to their car, and resulted in a 2nd place finish.
