Just figured I'd throw this out, i got laid off today (along with about 15% of the other staff) in a "reorganization"... Just looking to see if anybody out there in the IT field might have any positions or leads for me.

I am looking for an entry level desktop support position

I was with my previous company for 3.5 years, did support for the e-comm website for external clients, and desktop /software /hardware /printer /blackberry /Server 2003 /Active directory/if it has a computer chip in it i was support on it, for our ~100 internal users.

I Unfortunately do not have any formal education in the IT field, I took a few 1 day Excel courses at Global Knowledge, but that's the extent of it.

I consider myself to be advanced in Windows XP, windows 7 and office (2007 but they're all similar) (Excel being my strong point, not quite to the point of macros, but i do enjoy vlookups, pivot tables, and anything else that makes life easier).

I am comfortable using basically any software, in my spare time i like to play in Adobe Photoshop and with some video editing in Corel Videostudio.

Any leads or opportunities would be greatly appreciated

(it's hard to convey any level of professionalism with my user title, thanks rage2 <3 )

if anybody else is in the same situation, send me your contact info, I'll pass it on to my boss, he is looking for a couple more junior/intermediate techs.

how much in-depth knowledge on windows and end-user program familiarity is involved in getting a job like this with no experience?

Know your way around a computer, clean up and interview well. All these windows 7 projects lately need bodies and lots of the tasks are 'very' entry level, like unpacking and getting workstations on the bench, deploying them, etc.

Rate depends on the company. Long View typically hires employees but SI and Metafore like contractors.

Reach out to those agencies and you may be surprised at the response you get.

Consider taking the A+ certification if you have no formal education. It's not a difficult exam but would definitely help you in getting an entry level desktop support position if you have no formal IT education.
