Hey,
Anyone on beyond doing the spartan race this August?
For those of you that dont know its on this website This Is Sparta! (http://www.spartanrace.com)
I normally run road races and havent done much trail running but this looks like a blast.

Interesting, I may just try and get a team together for this.

i just heard about this the other day. I have thought a bit about trying it out.
how do you train for this?

Beyond spartan run? That looks insanely fun. i wonder what the setup would look like. It says it will have at least 10 obstacles and it is being held at COP...

I would assume something like crossfit would work for training. Some trail running with a weighted bag would also work well.

I just signed up a team last night, looking forward to it!
There is a trail on the south edge of the Glenmore reservoir I always run, Jack Rabbit. Good training for trail runs and something a little different than races that are on pavement.

1 month to the day. I will have to try that trail run. I have never done mud runs before does anyone know what sort of shoes would be best? Like cross trainers or trail running shoes?
GoChris
07-27-2011, 10:38 PM
For the spartan race, or trail running in general? You can get trail shoes, from Out There or MEC or somewhere. I want to get a pair, but I've just been using running shoes.

this looks awesome!
yeah, what shoes would you wear in the mud and such??

I am thinking of just using old runners that i dont care if they get trashed. i assume getting the mud out isnt going to be easy.

"Spartan Death Race - . . . . Please only consider this adventure style race if you have lived a full life to date."
Awesome. They should set up a spectator area near some of the tougher obstacles. I'd be there, beer in hand, to cheer on any beyonders.

who all did it? what did you think of the course? the hills were brutal
GoChris
08-29-2011, 09:38 PM
For me the hills were not bad, I'm used to doing a lot of running. I enjoyed the downhills but people were too slow and it was hard to pass.
The mud wasn't really muddy, the sheer wall was easy, but the sideways wall was impossible for me. The javelin was hard, I didn't get it stuck. Carrying the buckets up the hill was good but it got congested on the way down getting stuck behind slow people again.
Overall I found it to be a blast, I can't wait to do it again next year. I'll make sure not to get tripped at the end and avoid a face plant into the ground.

Just a bump since this is back this year!
Any suggestions from the guys who did it already on what to work on? Burpees and rope climbing with a dash of javelin tossing?
austic
03-26-2012, 09:35 PM
Running hills..... the obstacles were easy and just a break from the hill running.
I would say trail running with weights would be great training, Burpees mixed in make everything better.
I signed up for the Tough Mudder in Whistler this year which is supposed to be 3-4 time the distance so i will let you know how that one goes.
but honestly if its anything like last year it was a runners race

Mudder scheduled for Calgary in 2013.

Last years race was a runners race for sure, which made it quite easy for me, the hills were no problem with some training, but I sucked at Javelin toss and the side wall climb for sure.
Unfortunately the race is the same weekend as the Edmonton race so I'll miss it. The Mudder on July 21st sounds great but have a wedding :(
I wish there was more fun team cross events like these around.

It will be a challenge, but you could easily be ready for that. last years times for most people were 25-45 min range which is not that long of a workout. They actually are alot of fun and worth the suck....
This is another one that should be easier, looks like a flatter course mud hero (http://www.mudhero.com/)

Then Sign up to either event. They are a ton of fun and no matter your fitness level you will be challenged if you are going as fast as you can.

Alrighty post up if you did it - how did it compare to last year? I found it way tougher than mudhero but shorter distance. Way harder obstacles! A lot more mud as well - my knees are shredded from the barbed wire crawl.

That is quite an accomplishment! Props to you. So some people take 25 minutes, others close to two hours. How much training would the normal person need to get respectable time? Someone must be active and do some form of exercise daily?

I came in 706 out of 1700 hahaha I don't run though, this was purely winging it with no training whatsoever.....other than drinking at Ceilis the night before!:bigpimp:
Drinking the night before and waiting for team members during the race, lol. It was fun

I was volunteering at the 8 ft wall for the morning, and as the day progressed it got harder for everyone to get over because of the slippery mud. 3 women jumped over the men's side with no problem, bib 15 ran through with no shoes cause he lost them at the huge mud pit, and 2 dudes face planted in to the wall while trying to jump to grab the top.

Ah they did finally do combined results, out of 3850 instead of team and non team separate (made no sense)
http://racepro.ca/races/spartan/2012oacombined.PDF
Ran behind one of those 5-finger guys for a good chunk of the race - that was a first.
I think 8 ft wall and horizontal traverse are my favorites.

May as well bump this up!
Any other beyonders run Spartan yesterday or running it today?
First time trying it yesterday; did a morning heat and had pretty good time. Lots of good obstacles set up and I found the course layout pretty challenging as well.
Khyron
08-18-2013, 09:16 AM
Went yesterday - course was much better designed than last year. More running at the start to space things out with the first obs being the brick pull instead of the balance beam.
Rope climb and monkey bars were better than the tire lift and there was no crawling through the mud like last year (but a lot of wading through muddy water to your waist)
I pulled my calf in mud hero last week so no records will be set this time. I taped the crap out of it and hobbled along.

Just did it this morning at the 8:30 heat. Man I should have trained for hills more, the sandbag obstacle was not fun. After that though it was fun times. I didn't have to do any burpees (thank god).
Khyron, did you find spartan race about the same toughness as mud hero?
Khyron
08-18-2013, 01:39 PM
Mud hero needed no upper body other than climbing a cargo net or getting out of a mud pit. Spartan has the rope climb, the wall climb, monkey bars, spears and dragging bricks and sandbags.
First year mud hero was pretty easy as it was at Rafter 6 ranch and dead flat with an obstacle every 500m or so. But this year it was at a ski resort in Red Deer and you had to go all the way down then climb back up. Most people were close to an hour or even 2 hours. It did have 3000 dudes to 6000 women - very fun to spectate. Better for runners. Was also close to 6K of straight up or down vs spartan being barely 4km.

Yeah I thought it was pretty hard, I was there because my gf was doing it and I could see some of the course. And I did notice that there were a ton of women compared to guys, no complaints hah. I'll have to try it out next year.

Mud hero is more of a hill and running course obstacles didnt seem like much, Spartan was pretty good this year with a good mix of running and obstacles.
I ended up with 30 burpees as my shoes were pretty mud soaked on the traverse wall. Speaking of burpees it was sad watching what most people considered a burpee, kind of skews the times if people are doing 10 toe touches instead of 30 burpees.
Cant wait for the super and the beast.

Results are up - not sure why they didn't combine the days assuming the course stayed the same. Dropped a few spots compared to last year but had a blown calf (damn mudhero) so can't complain too much. I've been lucky so far and have not had to do a burpy on course. Now I'm jinxed.

My room mate ended up being the fastest from both days... Talk about a try hard.

Ran it in 45
Would have been around the 40 mark but had to get my leg wrapped due to hitting an under water boulder
Trained by running once a week before haha.
Ended up getting 6 stitches at the hospital, doc said he could see the connective tissue on my shin.
Sent them an email telling them I didnt consider hidden underwater boulders to be a very fair obstacle (Hit it right at the entrance to the last mud put, after the crawling part)

Must have sandbagged at mudhero - he was 71st there. Still pretty beastly results - did they give him free entry into the beast? Never understood how they do top 3 unless they wait till all the waves are over.

That's pretty impressive not having to do any burpees at all; the balance and the spear got the best of me ha-ha

those two were the ones I was worried about, I took my sweet time doing the balance board and got through. The spear throw I got lucky...
My spear went straight up but it stuck.

Turns out he signed up for the Mud Hero but couldn't make the race so our other buddy ran in his place. He finished 137th in the spartan on saturday which is a more equivalent time to what he did at Mud Hero haha.

Keep flip flopping, calf is sort of ok but wouldn't be setting any records. But might be good practice for next year. Are you in the 10am crossfit wave?

Yes going up with a few members from Crossfit Calgary, I am hoping that the obstacles are well done but it being the the first year in Red Deer who knows.
I am sure even with a bad calf you will smash most people
Me and a buddy are headed to red deer and sunpeaks after!

Pretty easy as far as the obstacles are considered, very little hills really a runners course again. Finished in 1:30ish which I was pretty happy about as I am really not the distance runner type or build.

09-08-2013, 05:52 PM
Nicely done! Would you say more or less hilly than the sprint in Calgary?
austic
09-08-2013, 05:59 PM
I was more tired after the Calgary course, Red Deer was long but pretty flat so you could just pick a pace and maintain it. Much More hills per Km at Calgary but that wasnt a really hilly course either. Tough Mudder Whistler....Now that had hills...
I dont expect the same gift out of sun peaks as the ski hill courses they tend to take full advantage of the elevation gains.
I thought Red Deer was a great overall course !
At Sun Peaks you'll have to earn that medal.

few Days till the Beast, Saturdays forecast calls for 6 degrees and light rain.
Friday morning looking like light snow.
That Green Medal is gling to have a cold feel to it.

Yep Melissa's in Banff is going to be 2-3 degrees if we're lucky. Just change quick after the race!

couldnt believe how much snow there was on the course 15-20cm at the top of the mountain, i feel sorry for people that failed on those obstacles and had to do burpees in the snow
Khyron
10-03-2013, 10:03 PM
AH snow would suck - not so much the cold but the loss of traction. Congrats on getting it done though.
Not sure I can swing the 8 hr drive next year but will do both the local ones for sure.
I figured there would be a lot more people with DNF status on the results. I wonder how accurate it was.
austic
10-04-2013, 11:13 AM
I feel like most people that came to that course knew what they were getting themselves into. I was actually surprised to see soo many DNFs.
