I do, though I seem to suffer heavily from the common model-kit-hoarding problem and buy more than I finish.

Every modeler does. They imagine how great it would be to make the kit, how it would be done soon, and keep buying. I've got a TON of kits that I really need to sell as I've come to the realization I can't possibly build them all (and then there are the kits that I think to myself "What the fuck was I thinking?!?!?" - usually because they were cheap or rare or something).

I've got a ton of build ups. Here's one:

This thread inspired me to go out and buy a kit, but now I'm sitting here wondering how I'm going to paint it, what kind of glue to use, etc. :(

Had a client who's son was a world champion from Singapore. He was contacted from Tamiya to paint for their production shots. His work would literally look real if it weren't for the actual scale. I'm amazed at how much time and focus some of you guys can put into these kits.

One of the most amazing modelers I know of is Kunta on AF. His ability to make paint shine like nothing else is just second to none.

http://www.works-y3f.com/index.htm

It's a shame his archived stuff can't be seen anymore. Here's a sample of his amazing work. We're talking mostly box stock:

http://www.works-y3f.com/m_cars/3_jpn/nissan/Z/Z32/Z32-2/05.jpg

AF is the way to go if you want to see amazing work and how it's done.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=927

EDIT: Also, another noteworthy modeler on AF (Tiking):

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1065247

His ability to make real life models and weathering effects absolutely blows me away.

^^ those pics of kuntas work are amazing!

i'm slowly working on a couple, just want to finsh a few of my favorites to have in home office, like Miura, F40, etc

here's some WIP of Lambo Miura...it started as a Jota kit i got for only $5 curb-side kit :)
i'm having to scratch build many items, the engine/trans are 100% scratch built
to have chassis, engine and interior detail i want, almost all is being scratch built...but it's fun!

I've enquired before as gifts to people I know, and it can cost 10,000+ given the amount of work and detail they put into them. It's sometimes just better buying a diecast 1:18 scale.

This guy's work blows everything out of the water though.

it's modelling puddy, oldskool stuff, but still can be bought at hobby store, mostly used by planes & military modellers, but i prefer it IMO

I tried building a 1/24 Tamiya 350z but ended up frustrated and gave up.
Those stickers to put are so small I can't figure out how to put them, I think I used the wrong super glue to attach the pieces as well so it turned out a little messy.

If anyone wants it, maybe redo it, they are free to take it.

sadly I'll have to stick with die-cast models

LOL those are waterslide decals... You cut out the general shape, dip them in water for about 20 seconds, let it sit on a cloth for another 20 secs, then put it up to the model and use a brush or tweezers to "slide" them from the backing paper onto the model. Dab dry with a piece of paper towel and also for getting rid of any air bubbles that form.

You almost never use superglue on a model unless you're dealing with metal parts. The only thing you need to put it together is liquid plastic cement and some patience LOL.

Man it's been at least 6-7 years since I've built one up.

Garnet, nice scratchbuilding. I am sure AF would love to see a progress thread!

Saw that the other day.. That would be an awesome piece to have. Not bad a price (well, estimated) given that a typical F1 car costs over a mil each? Well without the tranny/gearbox and electronics here but still...

Totally reminded me of James May Toy Stories LOL.

These are impressive models, yet they make me sad :(

I used to be really into model cars years ago. I built a ton of them on my own time before i met my wife.

Long story short, got married. The broad is a super cunt...and this is what i have left:

I have 4 new ones I picked up years ago, to replace the ones the psycho murdered:

But i just never had the heart to get back into it...

Missing are a 1990's Celica 4WD with 4WS, Testarosa, AW11 MR2, Old school Ford F150, A few F1 cars. I don't know what happened to those...i am sure they met the same fate.

+1, i've been doing it since i was a kid but i've never seen a shop that sells the engines by themselves.

also those 08chargersrt8 and ZZT23, you guys invested in a spray gun for the paint? that is my biggest prob with models, is achieving a good paint job, damned mini aerosols are expensive and inconsistent

Ive been a mod on AF since 2002. I used to be big into scale modeling and even casted and sold my own custom resin parts (blocks, turbos rims, body kits etc) airbrushed bodies, spent 10 hours wetsanding and polishing. Then I got a gf and sold all my shit.......single again, and really considering getting back into it

08chargersrt8 nice work man. Love your custom work. Doing turbos is hard as hell but one thing you should get into is casting molds. I used to have a really successful side business casting resin parts for the AF car modeling forum and it would probably benefit you because you wont have to do solder for every single turbo you want if you can go ahead and clay it and cast it

Been thinking about getting into this hobby for awhile. What's a good model to start with, nice and easy? Next time I'm in Calgary I want to stop by PM Hobby Craft. I was looking online and a lot of the instructions for some of the models I want are in Japanese, so that kind of scared me off.

I eventually want to get into tearing down and modifying diecasts, but that's a long way off.

here's one I built years ago (first is a bad scan of a bad polaroid of my actual car)

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a182/hitman357/model2.jpg

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a182/hitman357/model1.jpg

had to make some changes to the body (it had no seams to separate the rockers from the quarter panels and fenders, also had to add the lines for the headlight doors and the quarter panel caps) and make the rims out of something like a cragar s/s and some spot putty lol.

The Altezza model - Thanks again Clem24 :)

Damn is that a discontinued Tamiya Corolla FX16 kit? Not many of those around for sure...

I am also itching for that Levin kit, also not quite a common item.

Here is another one I have built most recently.

Glad to see you put those kits to good use! Glad to see those wheels go on the black civic, just as I had imagined!

The 510 looks fantastic too, engine bay detail is great!

I managed to snag a NOS Tamiya McLaren MP4/4 kit a couple of years ago. Brand new sealed almost 30 year old kit. I haven't had time to even start it yet...

I used to build models in my teens but then sold like 60 of them for 40 dollars. Totally regret it. Could have used them for parts! Now I collect 1/24 scale diecasts and build dioramas and sets for them. I want to start getting into photography but just too damn busy!

Here's my latest diorama that I made.

Hope the plastic is still OK. I had one of those but by the time I went to build it the plastic had turned into something with the consistency of sugar. Had to throw it away.

If It’s that old you’ll probably want to think about how old the decals are too. There’s a product called liquid decal film to keep the decals from disintegrating. I found out the hard way when I built the Mclaren... :banghead:

BUMP from the dead.

Does anyone still build these in their spare time?

Anyone recommend a place locally where I can buy kits and supplies?

PM Hobbycraft is pretty obvious but the prices are a bit more than everywhere else it seems and I also would like to go to a place with a large collection of detail-up parts and transkits for 1/24 import car models.

There's a bunch of guys in here that'll steer you in the correct direction. Bunch of them do regular sales of overstock/bulk kit buys too.

Modelland and Action Hobby are probably the only two other choices in Calgary. For actual kits, best bet is to order online if you want something specific. For supplies like glues, paints local are comparable if you need something on the fly.
