Can someone recommend a comfortable and durable pair of sandals? The problem with most sandals and flip flops is that u get calluses if u wear them too much. I looked at a few Birkenstocks and they're quite pricey but the biggest problem is u can't get them wet! That's hard to avoid if it's raining or u are traveling. Has anyone had a pair of Birkenstocks and how long did it last.

I have had the same pair of birks for over 6 years now and they just keep getting more comfortable every season.

I'm very hard on sandals and it took some time for me to seek out a good comfortable pair of durable ones but once I went to Merrill, I never went back. I had my first pair for 6 years and they only broke because I pushed out on my toe to crack it one day and snapped the restraint.

For other footwear, check out Vibram Five Fingers:

Do you own any of these? How do you like them? I'm intrigued.

I do have a pair, there's a store down by the Farmer's Market called Fitter First that is a retailer for them. They are amazingly comfortable, ever notice how you walk different when you're barefoot? This is how you walk in these shoes, plus they're amazing if you're at the beach or even doing light hiking.

I recommend the Nike CELSO flip flops. They are the most comfortable flip flops i've worn and doesn't give me blisters/calluses no matter how long I've worn them. my friends who bought some agree with me too.

I have a pair of dc flip flops. Wore them for 14 hours one day, no blisters, I would recommend adidas flip flops personally, they have that sweet gel sole, super comfortable.

I have a pair of reeboks that have lasted me since 2003. Walked around Europe, Mexico, San Diego, and all over town and out houseboating.

Agreed. I've seen a 3 year old wear them, but if you're an adult wearing those things, you've got problems.

Here's what I rock. Tough to find, but by far the most comfortable sandals ever. I've got 4 pairs of them, in case they get worn out cuz it's so hard to find haha.

I've done 6 hour walks with them, super comfy.

Depends on what you're looking for..

For comfort,
I'd recommend the Adidas Superstars Sandals
http://www.soccerevolution.com/store/images/retail/_hi_res/ADI_18058_F_big.jpg

These are super comfortable with a nice foam sole.

For style and some comfort,
I'd recommend the UGGs Bennison Sandals
http://www.shoes.com/ProductImages/shoes_iaec1190337.jpg

At first, it is hard to accept the fact that it is UGGs but it is extremely comfortable and it's made with 100% real leather. (No sheepskin, fur, etc.)

I heard the finger shoes or whatever are super good for running and working out? I was talking with some guys at the gym about it, they said that they're lifting more by wearing those during their workouts, just feeling more balanced and building strength.

Anyone have other insights about this?

Not sure about shoe type sandals, but I've had good luck with Reeboks and Reefs for flip flops. Had a pair of Reebok flipflops for 2 years that I tossed a few months ago, relatively thin and light, but still enough support for the most part.

The Reefs I got back in April are awesome! I was walking around up and down the Las Vegas strip pavement and my Reeboks just reached its end of life, the cushioning was now about 5mm thin at the heel and not providing much support. I ended up at a place called the Flip Flop Shop. Being Asian I've never spent more than $25 on a pair of flip flops which is how much the Reeboks costed that lasted 2 years. There was all kinds of madness there, flip flops that cost $100+ USD. I settled on a pair of Reefs with nice thick padding. You can get them in Calgary in almost any skate / sport store including Sport Chek for ~$50. Stay away from the novelty ones with bottle opener on the bottle (you don't want metal under your feet for support).

Great construction, has a nice hefty feel to it. Been using them quite a bit around town sometime walking 4~6hrs in them on concrete at a time.

hmm... cool, just found out there's a Flip Flop Shop in West Edmonton Mall. Olukai and Sanuk are something else, too much dough for my tastes for flip flops. Maybe some day

yea from what i've heard those finger shoes are great, as dorky as they look i've heard nothing but good things.

The problem with the way we walk is its not natural, these finger sandals force you re-learn how to walk and you will likely eliminate most back and knee problems.

And for the "no straight male would ever wear these" comment, I have a friend who is 250lb of pure muscle, competes in wrestling and the highland games and he wears them because of their benefits (and his trainer recommended them). Don't be such insecure little girls...

but to add to the OP's original comment, the sandals i've had the worst luck with are DC and Reefs so that gives you a couple brands to eliminate or at least be wary of when you are choosing a sandal.

Definitely. I wore them for the entire summer. The ones I bought have no cushion at all though so after about the third hour of walking around, it started to hurt the bottoms of my feet from impact. But that only happened one day when I took my parents to Banff for the entire day. Otherwise, when do you stay on your feet for 3-4 hours? I think the pair they have for running have padded bottoms.

they look horrible though.

I have a pair of crocs I bought and they have never left my back yard. Def comfy but similar to wearing jogging pants in public. for home use only.

I swear by Reefs, super comfy, and durable. Plus they have a bottle opener underneath.

I just came back from Hawaii and I saw a ton of experienced hikers wearing the foot glove things like the Vibram Five Fingers. I stopped a few people on the trail to ask and they all loved them. You don't have to worry about mud or stream crossings, and the sole is tough enough for hiking. They let you grip challenging terrain better and are light/comfortable in general. They are light, too.

I wouldn't be walking to the store and back in a pair of those, but if I was hiking or using them for a similar purely functional purpose, I don't see why you shouldn't consider them.

Just for regular flip flops/sandals I usually buy Quiksilver, they seem comfortable and durable.

My reefs were fucking destroying my feet at shambhala so i bought some "nomadic state of mind" rope sandals, hit the d floor(or forest floor i guess? haha) for 6 hours and didn't have an issue. They're comfyyy!

Also, i wore them to a kegger on saturday and got a ton of compliments.. i thought i'd get made fun of but i guess not haha

 worst advice ever! bottle opener is the most handy addition to footwear i have ever experienced! you do not notice it at all from a functional sandal standpoint, but it does work well and get lots of use camping or at the lake

I agree with the others, Reefs are the most comfortable flip flop style sandal.

i've also had birkenstocks in the past, and they're OK but the problem I have is that the leather stretches over time so they can become loose. also, moisture etc. soaks into the leather and footbed, and they get a funky smell over time. :(

teva's are good for more "off road" type activities, as someone else mentioned... but at the same time, Teva's are so, like, 1995.

At the running clinic at the UofC, I asked about the Vibram five-fingers even after I had bought them and according to them (though not a lot of research has been done) they're undecided if they're beneficial or detrimental at this point. I feel if they were 100% beneficial, they would have said it outright or at least hinted at it.

Start walking with them first. If you go straight into running, you could end up inuring yourself.

I agree with reefs, but I would never use that bottle opener after wearing them outside on dirt/roads/ the vegas strip etc
