I wanted to upgrade mine and my wifes phone and get one for my kids to share so I went into the telus store because I've been using them for 15 years. I didn't like what they offered.

I asked the guy what the penalty is to get out of the contract. He told me " five dollars per month per phone."

I went to the guys at costco and what they offered countered the penalties I was told.

Now three months later I get a telus bill for $650. and after an evening of the usual telus service on the phone I get someone who tells me its not $5 its $20.

I know I know I probably got some paper work somewhere that says what it is and I shouldn"t have trusted the guy in the store but I still think it was sneaky.

Oh well I guess I have to look at it as I paid $300 for my xperia arc :dunno:

It is pretty standard for 20 per a month, the salesperson you asked must of been a total idiot.

Don't think this idiot was trying to be an idiot, rather he just spewed out something on the spot because he didn't really know the answer is my guess.

I do remember there is a maximum though, usually a max of 200 per phone? or was it 300?

When I bought out mine in January it was 15 dollars a month. It was a 3 year contract with about 2 years remaining.

its $5 per month for the "early upgrade fee". If you just want out of the contract altogether, then it's $20 per month:

Not to mention they provide you with significantly better contract rates when renewing. Or at least my experience was that way.

I only paid $10 per month on a BB bold 9700.

I like my contract, I'll probably just pay retail for a phone if I want a new one. I just renewed and got a 9780 a few months back, but I'm looking at the 9810 now. I'll see what the reviews are like after the first few months. The 9800 has been pretty notorious for crashing like crazy, which makes it junk in my mind.

I cancelled 8 Telus phones last month and they all had more than 27 months left. My termination fees ranged from $480 - $740. The $740 fee was for a phone that had 35 months left of the 3 year term.

that's bullshit. it's a max of $400, and that's been implemented for about a year now. where did you cancel it? on the phone with telus?

I signed up with Bell and they took care of the switch for me. They gave me a port in credit for all of the 8 lines and I sold the iPhones so at the end of the day I might have paid around $500 out of my pocket to switch.

Would there be different rules for business cancellations vs personal cancellations?

For me going to Bell was worth it becuase the average cell phone bill was $300/month with Telus and now I pay $150/month and I have way more services and my data plans went from 1GB to 6GB.

I know that if you're not an actual retailer of the providers they won't let you touch corporate accounts. The supplier likes to deal with them directly via *611.

Now that I've relaxed and thought about the whole picture I realized it isn't even all that bad.
I cancelled two phones that couldn't even get internet, got two Xperia Arcs, one Xperia Play, one PS3, Rogers gave me $90 X 2 for switching, $75 X 3 in Costco gift certificates and the monthly bill for three phones all having internet is $15 more than two without internet.

Thanks for posting advice and similiar experiences.
