January is here and the time had come to drive across Canada to commence my winter semester at school in Toronto. The trip started out nicely with a cruise through eastern Alberta then onto Saskatchewan, the skies were big, the sun was shining..it was alright
Note all pics taken by the cam on my phone

In fact it was so nice out I had the sunroof open...things were gong nicely as my ae86 hummed away at 4200rpm doing 120km/hr

After almost 14 hours of driving however things began to get worse and Ontario welcomed me with wonderful weather

I spent the night in a Comfort Inn after having been on the road for 15hours...the damn hotel cost me almost $100 for one bed

By the second day I had reached Ontario and in typical Ontario fashion they were salting roads that didnt need to be salted, if you look in front of the cavalier with no license plate you will notice the salt truck and the single lane highway which lasts for 2200Kms

As the evening came near I stopped at a local Canadian tire for some washer fluid....what a horrible store

14 hours of driving and I had to call it a night. I stayed the night in some little town with a motel that cost me $39.95

Much better

Day 3..I left my wonderful hotel room at 5:30am, I was exhausted the change in time difference and all the driving was beginning to take its toll....after 2 hours of driving the oil level gauge in my car began dropping to the point where it was almost as low as it could go. I pulled over on the highway it was aprox. -45-50 degrees celcius. I didnt know what to do, I had no cell phone reception and there werent any other cars on the highway. I noticed a mine road nearby I walked 10minutes up the mine road and went into the mine entrance. I was greeted my security who where very helpful and gave my 4 litres of 10w-40 which was fine considering the position I was in. I filled up the car with oil and was determined to get to the nearest town to have the car inspected. Goal accomplised I made it to the town of white river population 1000. I pulled into the husky/service garage, the car was missing and smoking, I immediately turned it off. I got a mechanic to come and have a look at the car with me, I tried to start it, it wouldnt even turn over, the engine was SEIZED, it looks like the freezing temperatures were too much for the engine block

01-20-2004, 10:12 PM
With the engine done and no 4age's nearby I decided to leave the car at the shop and take the bus to TO, $158 later I had another ride..I had to determine what was a necessity and what could be left behind

Redlyne_mr2
01-20-2004, 10:14 PM
The gas station/bus station/sears had some amazing cell phones for sale like this 2 in 1 suitcase/cell for an amazingly low $250

Redlyne_mr2
01-20-2004, 10:16 PM
So now Im on the bus

Redlyne_mr2
01-20-2004, 10:18 PM
Happily I remembered I had a dvd player on my laptop so the 13 hours bus ride didnt really concern me, my happiness quickly ran out when I began enjoying the 2 towers and this f*cking message came on

Aww dude... I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you're going through. That motor in your AE86 was new wasn't it -- or did you just "tune" it up?

Keep us updated about your car and your trip -- best of luck.

Upon closer inspection of my ticket I noticed it was wrong and that for some reason I was being routed to northbay???..this would add another 6 hours to my trip, I never noticed before as I was exhuasted

Redlyne_mr2
01-20-2004, 10:23 PM
After a stop over for 3 hours in Northbay and chillin in this amazing bus station I was on my way to my destination, it was currently 4:15am on my 4th day of travel

Redlyne_mr2
01-20-2004, 10:24 PM
Finally 50 hours later I had reached my destination, a familiar face and a plush seat in a gs400 were a warm welcome

Yah man sucks oh well its just an engine, I think the worst part is having to pay someone to do a swap i could do myself for free and having to go back to that god for saken town to pick up the car. A new engine has been arranged and the 86 will be terrorizing TO shortly

Ah man, thats rough!

Half of me is glad I didn't go with ya, and part of me is mad I didn't cause I would have been able to help.

Ah well, at least you made it safe and sound, and no Miner had his way with ya. ;)

At least you made it bro!!!
You are a lot braver than most of us, I would of just bought a one way ticket. An airline had a fire sale not too long ago, $300 two way, all taxes in! So one way is the same cost as your bus ticket. LOL

Have fun!

Red Lyne, i might wanna also consider that the engine might not be seized.. but maybe you blew the HG and the car was buring off the oil and coolant etc.. if it still ran when you put more oil in then it could be something else..

That is brave, props to you for trying to drive out there and stuff.
If that was me, I would've definitly bought a 1 way ticket on Air Canada.
Sorry about your troubles and hopefully things will pick up.

Shit, I started getting scared when you said you started walking down the road to the mine, that musta took a lot of balls! Anyways, if you end up in Sudbury or North Bay again drop me a PM and I can give you suggestions on where to stay and what to do for entertainment.

Yah man its seized, it wouldnt even turn over. A friend of mine suggested that the insanely cold temperatures caused the oil to turn to sludge when it passed through the oil cooler. Thanks for all the concern guys it really appreciated. I dint buy a plane ticket because I need a car out in Ontario and I had a ton of stuff to bring over including skis and a minifridge, that will teach me for induring the 86 to artic temperatures.

When I was in Cali...a ton of cars were driving around with no plates. I heard that new cars could drive without a license plate for 3 months b/c that's how long it took for the state to send them a plate!

I would do a 20V right away problem is the car is in the middle of nowhere and its going to cost $780 to have it shipped down to TO so I scrapped that idea and Ill have to get an engine that will make the swap as easy as possible for that little husky shop where it's at:thumbsdow

I've examined every option, I don't have the connections here in ONT like I do in AB, plus no one drives pickups here anyways. None of the rental car companies will let me tow either

Its the nokia 3650 it does generate some decent pics, perfect for "spotted" situations. Eurotang, it wasnt bad driving by myself, Ive got a pretty good stereo in the corolla so I made some cds the nights before and just listened to good tunes the whole way there
