have you guys ever ordered any snowboarding/ski jackets online? if so, could you please refer me to a good website.

i've looked at 'the-house.com' and 'nextag.com' but i've been reading bad reviews about them. should i bother buying online or just locally?

thanks!

Take your pick from that list. From what I have seen online, you usually will get charged duty on anything coming from the states. So I think it is usually not worth it, unless you can ship to a US address.

I know the thread title says Ski, but I have a question that I was hoping to get answered by the end of the day. I made a thread in regards to comparing sizes in 2011 vs 2012 Burton snowboard boots and was wondering if anyone knows if the fit will be the same for both?

snowboarding guy here.. so if i want a ski movie that's like Claim - which do i want to watch?

I've ordered from http://www.trusnow.com/ when they were known as Sierra Snowboards. Had to pay taxes but no outrageous brokerages or anything. Things may have changed though. I picked up Bonfire pants and jacket for under $180 after it was all said and done compared to $250+ local.

I am a little confused, do you want a snowboard movie? Or ski movie? If you want a snowboard moive right now, check out Thats it Thats All. Killer movie. If you want to wait a little bit, there is a new one coming out in the fall called The Art of Flight. I think this one has been filmed over the last 2 years (last year being an amazing winter for snow) and is sort of a "sequel" to Thats it Thats all. I would recommend checking out both when you get a chance though

I don't know many ski movies other than Claim, so I can't comment on those.

I ordered a Helly shell from tramdock.com, but I think they're shut down now. Try www.steepandcheap.com, they only sell one item at a time, but it's at a ridiculous price, just gotta wait till it's something you want. i got a Helly Hansen jacket for $120, regular was over $300.

What was their fiasco? I spent my time at KH and Fernie last year. it was great.

There was a strike, basically all ski patrol members walked off the job because of a dispute between Sunshine's owner's son being in a closed off area of the mountain and a ski patroller who was then suspended/fired for the incident. The patroller was essentially questioning their presence in a restricted and potentially dangerous area and didn't give a crap who that kid was. More or less the "incident". I might be doing the same as calgarygts.

@nj2Type-S

I ordered one of my jackets from departmentofgoods.com (formerly backcountryoutlet) based in the states. Usually have decent deals on gear. Only bummer is sometimes the gear doesn't ship outside of the US and you do have to pay shipping fees. I typically get a bunch of my buddies together and if they want anything we put it on the same order and just split the cost for shipping.

Another one to check out is shop.thinkempire.com based out of Quebec. Decent selection of goods and they usually do free shipping in Canada as long as you spend a certain amount (minus discounts and such).

i've only ever owned 1 snowboarding jacket and it's a helly hansen. it's so warm that i want another helly hansen fo rmy next jacket.

i know it's really played out but i'm looking for a white camo jacket. too bad there's none of those from the links you guys mentioned. the sites that do carry them seem to receive bad reviews from users regarding bad customer service; i'd rather avoid those sites. :)

Had a question for you guys regarding flappy skis (Reverse Camber).

Im currently skiing on 182cm Salomon Xwing Fury's (I'm 6'1) and really like them. Great all round ski, but in the deep powder they're sinking battleships. I skied with a guy (similar height) from Revvie and he had 190ish cm flappy skis. The way he floated on the powder looked effortless and I was super jealous.

Looking to get into some used reverse camber skis but know nothing about them. Budget is under $500 for skis and bindings. Any opinions, tips, or things I should look for?

Freeskier
08-24-2011, 08:39 AM
The reverse camber skis are gonna run you more than 500. They're designed for deep powder and not much else so if you're still gonna be ripping groomers and ice in the front country you might want to look at some fat skis with regular camber and sidecut. That said I've heard the armada jjs rock even on hard packed snow and I'm gonna pick them up as a second set for backcountry and powder days. All the big company have at least one pair of reverse camber and most are priced fairly equitably. I'd head down to fresh and have a chat with the guys down there and see if they can recommend something for you.

98brg2d
08-24-2011, 01:02 PM
Lots of skis now are similar design to the JJs and S7s and should definitely give a good balance of float in powder and grip on harder snow. You don't really need much rocker and you definitely don't need a full reverse to get good float in powder.

Personally, I would stick to a design that has some camber or flat camber but not full reverse unless you are looking at something like a Gotama or an S6/Sickle which are both really good skis and the ski is cambered and sidecutted to actually get quite a bit of edge on snow as it is tipped over. Both those skis are full reverse but it is so slight they almost look flat.

Another route is to get a ski that has traditional camber but very soft tip and tail and a relatively stiff mid section. There are some Rossi Scratch Steezes on kijiji that fit this description (essentially these are traditionally cambered version of the latest S6/Sickle). A lot of skis listed as "park/powder" also fit this description.

Have fun experimenting!

Freeskier

word. The only rockered ski i've used is the first gen pontoon and those tried to take my life on the first patch of ice I hit at the end of a powder day.

On a side note, just watching 'the way i see it'. Woooo fresh hat. Same one that's on my head right now haha.

Any nice snowboarder here that knows equipment that can help me out. My friend owed me money back in Kelowna years ago and instead just left me his boats and board. I have no idea what there worth :( I never snowboarded in my life and have no idea how much there worth, but I figure that I might as well sell them. If someone can give me a hand I can take pics and send them.

Board is a morrow spoon and the boots are Airwalk extreme. No idea what the bindings are. Boots are size 7.

Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to get back into skiing this year and was hoping to get some advice on buying some gear.

I'm 5'10 ~170lbs and would say I'm beginner/intermediate.

I mainly go to sunshine/lake louise. I would like to get skis boots and poles all for under ~$400.

Anyone have deals that they'd like to share?

98brg2d
08-26-2011, 11:19 AM
I have cheap boots size 10 -11 ish (two pairs). I also have skis but they are too long for you if you truely are less than an intermediate (they are 191) and they are GS side cut (~28-m radius) not super carvers.

Everlast
08-26-2011, 12:44 PM
Are the boots fairly big? I normally wear a size 12 shoe.

98brg2d
08-26-2011, 01:28 PM
You always try them on and see, usually you down size one size (maybe two) from street shoes but you really need to check the shell fit which I can do for you, just bring clean socks and feet. Width on both is ~100-mm, sized off MP 26 shell, so in reality is probably 103-mm so width wise should take C, D and possibly E width feet. One boot is a 27.5, the other is 28.5 but different brands (One Rossignol, the other Head) so they fit a bit different.

im 5'11'' and around 180ish running a 185 armada JJ as my pow/deep days ski. I have even had it out for the odd groomer day and taken it in the park, handles very well considering how big of a ski it is.

You might want to look at a ski like the rossi S3, around 100 underfoot with a similar shape to the S7 (but smaller and less weight) with a good amount of rocker in the tip and tail. A friend of mine was on these everyday last year, from park to dropping 20+ foot cliffs in revy pow and he loved them

I am looking to buy a shovel to carry in my backpack on the resort to possibly build a kicker with. I looked at some avi shovels, but don't want to spend $50+ for one. Anyone know where I can find a cheap, small, foldable/extendable shovel that could fit in a 20L backpack?

Got a quick question being that it is only my second season of boarding.

Do resorts frown upon people who show up early season after a good dump and want to hike up and get some turns in for the day? If anywhere close by gets some good snow, I might make a trip out before they open and try to get a run or two in for the day by bootpacking up. Anybody have any experience with that?

Freeskier
10-07-2011, 11:43 AM
Yeah I've been chased off a couple hills by doing that. I was staying in a condo at panorama and we hiked up on a pow day. The ski patrol had us off the hill before we'd even got to the top. I usually used to stay and hike the pipe after close until the groomers came up. Theyre usually cool about it, just make you leave.

For you expert Beyonders, I'm about to learn snowboarding for the very first time.

COP has a first timers course, it's $59 and includes gear, lift ticket and 1.5 hour lesson.

Good idea? Common consensus from friends is COP is super icy and not the best place for a beginner to learn.

I just like it because it's close to home and I want to get some basics down before I head out to the mountains. I know I'm going to get my ass kicked the first few times but it's now or never to learn these things!

Sometimes it isn't too bad, like after a nice snow dump. I found when I first started (years ago) the packed "snow" was easier to learn on because you can actually feel your toe or back edge and have some control over your speed. Sure you'll pick up bruises when you fall but it'll be worth it. A few of my friends learned to carve and such at COP but had a difficult time with it up in the mountains. It's all about developing muscle memory and control. Riding on groomed snow is miles away from riding on fresh powder of course so don't be scared to give the mountains a shot anyway, most have beginner slopes.

Just curious what the hills are like on a weekday? Say Sunshine?

Monday to Thursday kind of deal? I'm presuming most people are working?

Sat/Sun are the busier times when everyone heads out?

Fortunately I can take weekdays off so I think that's the time I'm going to go get my ass kicked and practice lots. Friends are planning a couple trips to Kicking Horse and Whistler so I need to learn, FAST. lol

ExtraSlow

Probably less than 25% of the crowd on a weekday compared to weekend. If you do ski on the weekend, get out there early. I like to be in the lodge eating my breakfast about 20 minutes before the lifts open, you'll have the place to yourself for about the first hour.

One of my favourite weekday spots is doing laps on the Mystic Express at Norquay. Closer, cheaper and quieter than Sunshine and Louise. That chair has a nice fall line, and a decent variety of runs. Not to mention better visibility in flat light and wind protection, due to the trees.

I used to ski nothing but Sunshine, last year had some great trips to Norquay.

Sorry for all the noob questions  but here's another one.

Will my ice skating ability help skiing? I'm skating a couple times a week and getting better each time I get out. Originally I wanted to try boarding but I have a fear on skis that I want to re-vist, confront and conquer first (kind of like my fear of swimming which is taken care of now). I don't want to get too discourage by falling on my ass all day with learning boarding and I heard skiing is easier to pick up.

Thoughts? Thanks.

It'll definitely help. It's the same concept when you're trying to keep your feet parallel under speed and weight distribution when turning. Let me know if you have more questions. I'm by no means an expert but I love skiing and I'm getting back in the "game" after snowboarding for the past 12 years.

I was at Nakiska yesterday, shredded the shit out of the place haha. Spring like conditions, found some cut in jumps to get back into spinning.
Spent most of the run skiing switch to get that ability back.

I usually get a season pass to Sunshine, but this year I wanna explore more, Revy, Fernie, Kicking Horse, etc... Went to Revy once last year but it was way too early in the season and it sucked. Looking at buying some groomer friendly skis this week, a few hrs a few nights a week at COP might be nice. Can't wait!

How is the snow there in December? Worth taking a trip if it dumps?

Anybody ever go into the backcountry? I am starting the process of looking into it and if anyone has any experience in the BC and wouldn't mind a few questions or giving me some tips let me know!

I'm also looking forward to Revelstoke. It'll be my first time there and I'm probably gonna go for a 2 or 3 day weekend.
Beyond Meet at Revelstoke???:D

I'd be down for Revelstoke as well. Tried to make it out last year, but didn't have enough vehicles with winter tires to make the journey across the border :/

I've only been to Revelstoke in March before but it was damn good. Kicking Horse, Revy and Whistler are my three favorites in Western Canada.

Ideally I'd like to take a week and do Sunshine, Lake Louise, Kicking Horse, Revelstoke, Big White and Whistler Blackcomb. Gonna start planning in the next few weeks.

I must get some practice runs first...Haven't skied in a while but I'll be ready soon enough.

From what I read, only a couple runs and only 2 lifts will be. Only $40 to go though
