Cellphone Earbuds - Compatibility with Androids?

I recently bought a Xperia Arc, the headphones that came with it are pretty good sound quality wise, but 1 thing that bothers me is that the mic is kind of heavy so the bud with the mic attached to it keeps falling out of my ear.

So I went out and bought a pair of Sennheiser's that come with a mic and song control. Turns out they're not compatible with my Arc. Never realised headphones weren't universal.

My question is, what do I have to look for on the packaging before making another purchase? Ideally I would like to use my phone as my main music player so I'm not carrying soo many things.

I'm also looking for earbuds that have a mic and can skip songs from it.

Im not entirely sure if you need to look for something on the package.

My initial guess would be to check out the owners manual of the phone and see if it mentions anything in regards to headphones and/or mics?
