How is the range on wireless routers? I am planning on buying one so I will be able to use a laptop anywhere in my house but I'm not sure how far away I can go from the router. My computer is in the basement and I want to use the laptop in my room which is on the 3rd floor. I'm not sure if the signal will stay strong though. :dunno:

About 1500 feet is what most of the makers of wireless routers quote...

Depending on what router you get, you'll find that it can be as little as 50 feet upto 150ft (to get max transfer rates anyway). Oh, and the 2.4GHz range products (802.11b / 802.11g) have the further ranges while 802.11a has the shortest (5GHz frequency).

yah im going to get one with 802.11b, I'm thiinking about this one http://www.compusmart.com/product.asp?CatalogID=0&SupplierPartID=079046
My friends dad has this one so I'll just go and test it out tomorrow

edit: I just saw the range on this router, I guess this is as good as it gets:dunno:

DLink is SHIT IMO...
I worked at C-Smart for a year as a tech/service advisor. I was responsible for taking back defectives.
More DLink routers came back than I have ever seen....

Spend the extra $$$ and get a wireless G. It won't make any difference when you're sharing the internet, but it will when you're sharing files between the two computers.

Chester

yah but I dont really care about sharing files between the two computers

ya I went through all of them, D-Link, Linksys and SMC; all 802.11g. THe d-link kept kicking me off and just wasn't working right. the Linksys was the most expensive back in the day and it was pretty good. But now I've had the SMC for about 3 months and it is working great, has the most security options, has the best link (get 54g pretty much everywhere) and is the cheapest got if for 80 bux!
no, my neighbours didn't know I was on :D, make sure you wap it whatever u get.

If it's just for internet, no, you won't notice any difference.

Do most routers now a days use B or G? or can they all prett ymuch do them all?

I would go with a G anyways. New technology = good.

Who knows in the future some wireless hotspots will only support G. Doubt it but you never know.

If it is a linksys you can enter the user control panel by entering 192.168.1.1 in the Address field of internet explorer or similar web browser.

From there you can enable WEP
