Yup, assistant, or alternate Captain (Should the real Captain be injured or something).

A stands for assistant captain, if there is a controversial play, one of the assistants or captains must talk to the ref or linesman normal players are not suppose to. So since a captain cannot come off the bench to talk to the ref, if there is an assistant on the ice then they can talk to the ref. basically another person who can talk to the officials.

I'm pretty sure it is 'Alternate Captain' and not 'Assistant Captain'
