View Full Version : If you were going to build a car...

What would you guys do, your budget is about 10,000-15,000 for whatever you want, I'm not looking for "how fast" of a car you could build for 10-15g's but what would you guys buy or build if you had that to throw at a summer / project car. I'm trying to decide on my next build and not sure. I do want boost, so that'll factory in, also the more unique the better, don't say mustangs, camaro's, civics, talons, ect. so far I'm at:

S2000 w/ 2jz or LSx swap (would be more then 15,000g's but could build it slowly)

70ish Datsun 280z with the same swap as the one above

LHD FD with the same swap's as above haha

I really want an e30 m3, but they are going up in value like crazy (roughly 20 grand). so maybe finding a wrecked one (ya right) and building it would be sweet. You could make a pretty crazy miata for 15 grand?
there is an old 280 for sale in sparwood for around 1000 bucks, but i think a large portion of the floorpan is gone.
build a pretty sweet soarer for 15 grand, they even had some lexus sc300 with a manual produced down in the states

A drifty corolla. I've got a buddy out here who's about 12g into a 200sx and I've been hanging out with him and his drifting friends for a bit. Getting pretty stoked on it. Love to find a project corolla or 240 that I can start working on.

280z with a 2jz would be a sick car.

a 240z would be even better, but finding one that is in reasonable shape for a reasonable price is pretty difficult.

the engine wouldnt be that much to do actually.

2jz-2000$ from an aristo

r154 tranny- 300-700$ in good shape

Standalone ecu to run the engine-1500-2000$

Fabrication would most likely be the biggest bummer on this build, as mounts, shifter relocation, and piping/exhaust would need to be fabricated.

Lots of ways to go about it... :D

I'm quite peculiar when it comes to vehicles, but at that budget, the choice for me is quite easy to make!

Buy a 2005 or 06 smart with a blown engine for about $3-5k and drop a GSXR1000 engine in the back. There are kits for this out there that will plant your final bill for this project within the established $10-15k budget. You could probably throw a turbo kit on it and still stay under $15k. 200+ hp in a smart would be something I'd look forward to driving! But then again, I've owned 2 smarts before so I am kinda biased.

I would Finish my 240Z with a 3.2 L-Series engine. Triple 45mm mikuni carbs, Kameari camshaft, Kameari valve springs, Kameari crankshaft, Cosworth flat top pistons, OS Giken head (thing costs 10g alone) Kameari drag stainless steel headers, Fujitsubo legalis-r muffler. That's only the engine.. Oh baby.

Go with the Z - but build the L28 - don't swap...

Dumping the bosch mechanical injection and upgrading the turbo (+ big intercooler (90s mack fits nice)) will easily outdo a 2JZ swap for a lot less $ - those L28s will take a lot of boost with little more than a modern headgasket...

And for the rest of us that like to build our own cars and have fun with them.

This is what i have in mind for you Jake. Grab a seat:D

1986 Nissan 200sx RWD hatch
Chev LQ9/LQ4 long block , Ported stock heads, big valves and etc. Forged rotating assembly
Fast intake,Turbo cam
Twin magnum power 72mm turbos (bb version of masterpower)
Haltech/ With digital display dash
R32 gtr rear diff and axles
2spd power glide or TH40 tranny

I maybe missing some things but there you have it.

1000WHP in 2600 pound cool nissan that doesnt have jdm drifter tax on it. Only thing you would need next is the testicular fortitude mod

S2000 with 2JZ or LS1 are stupid swaps, especially the 2JZ. What the 2JZ does, the F2XC does better. Better response, it'll spool faster, and can get rediculars numbers on a stock block. LSx is a better swap for torque, however at the end of the day you'll be left with a car that:

1. You cannot launch. If you do, you'll snap the diff. Get a stronger diff and you break the tranny. Want to upgrade the tranny? That'll be another 10 grand for a gear set, and you still cannot launch it (PPG gears have no warranty).

2. You cannot push the car in 2nd gear (weakest gear in s2000 tranny).

Flashpro? 2006+ cars only are reflashable, earlier cars you need a standalone ($2000+ for Kpro). Ivtec = $3000+ for that kit. Slammed = $1500 minimum if you want decent coils and roll/pull. Hardtops are $2000 min for the fiberglass knockoffs.

So more than double the budget.

Im feelin the dime for sure.

#1
A nice 510 coupe, lightened with as much fibreglass/carbon as possible, widebody, tasteful cage and comfortable yet functional interior. With a SR20VE NA build. Revs to at least 11000 and 300-350hp.

SR20VE Sleeved, Bored and stroked to 2.4L, 11:1 pistons, big cams, big valves etc and the usual headwork. Big brakes, full suspension

#2
Stock looking LHD Red S14 putting down 500whp from a fully built SR20. JDM aero kit, big brakes... wait... this is sounding very familiar...
Too bad its definately not under $15000

Anyway, I would go for the Datsun idea. I love that car, and to give it 400+ HP would be a wet dream come true.

Some other cool/retarded thoughts (IMO):

Volvo station wagon with 5.0L TT
Mini Cooper FF - MR drivetrain swap with Vtec K20

And my most ridiculous idea, and a bit far-fetched, is making a rat rod with an old WW2 Spitfire engine (that is a 27 liter, V-12 engine with 1400HP+ ). The car should cost you <$1000 if you fab it yourself. The engine would be hard to get a hold of, but they can be found for $5000 or less as long as you can get them working again. Fucked if I know how to merge the 2 together, but it would be sweet!

From Wiki:

Merlin XX (RM 3SM)

1,480 hp (1,105 kW) at 3,000 rpm at 6,000 ft (1,830 m); two-speed supercharger; boost pressure of up to +14 psi; Used in Hurricane Mk.II, Beaufighter Mk.II, s, Halifax Mk.II and Lancaster Mk.I bombers, and in the Spitfire Mk.III prototypes (N3297 & W3237).[76] First production Merlin XX, 4 July 1940.
