I get a call last week from my parents asking me why they can't view a CD-ROM of pictures. So I talk them through the setup, and it turns out that when you open the "Computer" tab in Win 7, the DVD drive isn't recognized. They aren't sure when it happened, or how, but it doesn't show up in the available drives window.

To get it to show up again, would I go through Device Manager, and see if I can get it to scan for available drives and reinstall the driver? Or is there another way to get the drive to show up again?

First make sure it shows up as a dirve in the BIOS setup, when you are first booting the computer hit del or whatever it says to do that.

If the drive doesnt show up in bios, it wont show up in the hardware profile because its not working. This could be due to a bad cable inside, or the drive conked out, you'll have to troubleshoot it.

Right, thanks. I forgot about checking the BIOS. Any other tips to see if I can get this working?

How about checking to see if it's plugged in?

If the drive shows in the BIOS, but not Windows, then this should fix it:

Thanks Seth. Turns out the driver was corrupt. That program you posted worked perfect.
