One thing I will say is the interior in my 2005 Legacy GT is miles ahead of my friends 2011 STi in my opinion.

Of those I would say the Legacy or the S60. Sti and Evo not family sedan. The CTS-V is fun but can be tricky in the winter.

I don't technically have a family I just like the look and practicality of sedans and wagons over 2 doors.

Not worried about the winter too much, I have an Xterra for that.

Also interested in any suggestions people have.

I would say SRT-8 300C or CTS-V

Maxima = fwd, no thanks

IS350 = too exspensive, not dealing with the slowness of the 250

BMW's = maybe M5 e39 but pretty pricey for km's and age. thinking about 335 but would be pushing budget end up getting an early model which from what I hear has some pretty serious problems.

No matter the car it will without a doubt be modded.

I was looking at the CTS-V's a few months ago (the current 560hp ones), and really liked them. In the class, it had the nicest interior IMO. In the end, it wasn't enough to push me from my C63.

Anyways, recommending you look at used C63's, if you can find them. People seem to love the car, so it's rare seeing good ones up for sale. You'll probably start seeing more in the next few months, when the first batch of 3 year leases start expiring.

If IS350 is too expensive I doubt C63s would be in the picture either. Also I just saw must be manual.

Not too many sporty sedans with manuals out there. 3 series, G sedans, A4s, Manual TSX is very fun even if it's a bit slow and FWD.

I don't think rage read the whole post... sub 30k is key.

G8 GT's only ever came in auto in Canada.

Honda accord is not in any sense of the word "sporty"

No love for the Germans? They are basically in the business of making the best sport sedans in the world haha.

That said, if you're limited to sub $30k, I'd be having a close look at a 2007+ Infinity G35/G37Xs You won't get better bang for the buck than that.

You could look at B6 Audi S4's but they would be older, like 2004-2005. You could get a B7 (2006+) if you were OK with high KM.

A 2006 BMW 330i (new body style) would be in your price range as well.

you dont want to deal with the electrical quirks on that thing when they go, believe me, BUT from experience they are great reliable highway + winter cruisers with lots of toys inside.

srs note i am looking for a sporty sedan for dd as well, mazdaspeed 6 or first gen g35x would be nice but i bet those would eat the gas

It's because when they first came out, they were $73k, then a year or two later, I believe they were $56k because nobody was buying them - they were competing price-wise with all the V8 German sedans at $70k. So, when that price reduction happened, all the early RL adopters got absolutely owned on resale.

The problem with the RL has always been what else you can buy for the same money. It's a gorgeous car though.

They sold 33 RLs in Canada in 2010. Worst selling car in the country.

Tons of them in US that are asking for same or less.

This... One of the best sport sedan bargains IMHO. The 545i was pretty much the most reliable of any of the "performance" 5 series (before M), more reliable than the E39, definitely much more than the E60 535. It's hard to figure out what better sport sedan you can buy for around $20k. Manual 545s are quite common as well.

If you want something smaller, as Mitsu pointed out, the '06 330i with sports package is also fantastic.

Surprised to hear about these Electrical Quirks. I have heard its generally pretty solid.

I still think these are some of the best used bargains out there.

Not concerned, the K03 issues are mainly with b5 s4's as they have kinked oil feed lines, and are prone to coking. The C5 chassis has more room/straight feed line. Turbo's are easy enough to inspect and if theres no dentist drill noise/oil weeping it's probably going to be fine.

2.7T gets a bad rep from owners who abuse it (APR Chip + WOT runs + not letting turbos cool down = failure). I'm going to tackle the timing belt myself so I'm really not worried about it being a money pit.

Do I like the 2.7T more than the 2.2 20vt? No. Is it a better daily driver motor? Absolutely.

Besides, 2x RS4 K04's are in the $1500 range... If I do labour myself, I can't see a Stage 3 package costing more than $3000... the audifans marketplace is key.

I find all acuras / hondas just too boring, they seem like old man cars.

I had no idea the 545 was in my price range i'll be looking at more of those.

speed6, problem is the biased fwd awd system I'm not a huge fan if I were to get a speed model it would be the 3.

If i got an s4 it would have to be the b7 model, you just cant trust the 2.7t. I don't see a b7 being worth the extra cost though.

g35/7's are a dime a dozen they really don't spark any interest in me.

e39 m5 too much money for one, they go for high 20's with 100,000 + km, no thanks.

330 or 335i, hate the looks and the interior, my dad has a 06 33xi and there is not much i like about it, shifter feel is good i guess and it handles reasonably but a little rough, and the interior feels really small.

Short-list thus far

1. 545i by far the most car/$
2. CTS-V liked them ever since they came out
3. S60R love the 5 cyl and rarity factor
4. B7 S4 if I can find lower mileage at a reasonable price

Good call on the 545i, I totally forgot about that one. $100k car when new, now easily had for $25-30k for a nice sample.

My Dad has a 2004 545i and that car has not had a single issue in it's 8 years. Phenomenal car, and one of the best automatic transmissions I've ever experienced. Perfectly good in the winter, too.

As for the Audi 2.7 TT...nothing wrong with that motor at all. The guys having issues are the same guys not turbo timing it, not waiting for oil temperature before they get on boost, etc. That is bad for any turbo car. I had a 2000 S4 for a few years, my car was even chipped so the turbos were running basically full capacity, especially at our altitude, and not one single issue with that car. I had the service history too, and it had no engine issues before I had it either. I turbo timed it, never got on the gas without oil temperature, use synthetic oil, and spent ~$100 to fix some common weak points (F-hose, throttle body boot). Done. There are guys with 160,000 MILES on chipped 2.7T motors, with zero issues. It's exactly the same as any other turbo engine, it has more parts so there is more opportunity for things to go wrong if you abuse it.

As for B7 S4 and 545i, I had them both in the same garage and drove both frequently. The S4 is smaller, but has more balls and is more fun to drive. The 545i has more toys and was more comfortable for 4-5 people. They are different types of cars, that's all.

^ just go C5 A6 2.7T with a proper inspection. S4's get bagged on - A6's really dont attract the same boy racer market.

There is a lot of misconception about this. Yes under "normal Driving", the system is heavily front Biased (like 90/10), this is great for gas mileage. Now when intelligent system detects things slip, it goes into somewhat of a ~50/50 distribution . Then when you get on the throttle it changes to a rear bias, which can actually be felt. I guess the downfall is that this is a reactive system but in my experience holds very well slippery conditions. Just thought i would throw that out there.

Your short list is very nice, i would drive any of those in a heart beat.

2012 vw gli? Just started seeing these at the dealers and can be had for just over $30k out the door.

How about a Pontiac G8 GT or GXP. V8 RWD. No MT, but it does have a 6 speed auto. This is the Australian built Pontiac. A nice GT can be had for 20K. Really nice looking cars IMO.

Not interested in the depreciation that comes with a new car. I have no idea about these but are they even awd/rwd or manual?

It's basically a CTS-V and I would rather have the cadillac comfort and looks but I have looked at importing a 6-spd variant from the US, and I don't think it's worth it.

As I read more and more posts it seems that the 545i can not be touched in terms of performance, luxury and in my opinion, looks.

WOW, well played, i thought one of those would go for well over 20K, i stand humbly corrected. Your looking at 16-17 K for a decent speed6. The 545 hands down is the far better choice in all aspects. I would say you get an excellent value with that. Yup depreciation is a bitch, might as well take advantage of it.
