Not too familiar with this myself so i thought i'd ask here.

What's a good whiskey to give as a gift? i guess looking for something a little more "special" than JD or johnnie walker, but something that doesn't break the bank.

i guess the other thing i wanted to know if there are sizes under a fifth? that would probably be ideal in terms of a gift i think.

all comments and suggestions are appreciated, thanks guys!

How much do you want to spend? And, if you can, narrow it down to a type of whiskey.

probably something in the 50$ range? just a small gift for someone i see every so often.

can't say i know too much about whisky myself but i used the ol' google and came across this

http://cocktails.about.com/od/spirits/tp/whiskey_brands.htm

if i had to narrow it down, i think i would go with either blended scotch or a single malt....hope that helps haha

In the $50 range of scotch Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are going to be the most accessible. My personal favourite would be MacAllan 12 year.

You can get a nice bottle of Dalwhinnie at superstore around $50.

Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are pretty generic IMO.

Also, you can get Zaya rum at Costco for around $50. This is amazing rum. It is pretty sweet tasting, but no carmel is used in production. Also, consider El Dorado rum around $50. Cork @ Beacon carries this.

Now that I think about it, Cork also carries Johhnie Black ~$50. This is an amazing whiskey and must be tried. Don't confuse it with Johhny Walker, this is an unrelated spirit.

50$ is kinda the bare minimum on scotch to begin with... but... Bowmore 12 or legend (blend) are good generics on the lower end...

Smokehead if you've got an islay lover... Not for the faint of heart tho - it's a true smokemouth scotch. I love it - my wife wont even touch it  She's even tried mixing it with coke :banghead: only to dump the glass as 'undrinkable'

I'd hesitate to give somebody Bowmore 12 unless I knew they liked Islay scotch.

Johnny walker green label is one of my favorites, might cost a little more than 50 though.

i'm no whiskey (or 'white whiskey' connoisseur for that matter) connoisseur or anything but a friend got this stuff for his bday:

he gave me some and it was the smoothest whiskey i've ever had, i saw it at the superstore liquor detachment, ~$36 iirc?

A good bottle of Jamesons never could be bad.

I wouldn't go with peaty whisky like Bowmore.
For someone to be introduced to single malt I would recommend either Highland Park 12 or my favorite Glenfiddich 15 Solera, both for less than $50 from Superstore.

PS Oban is excellent, however $80 for bottle can't be justified

12 / 18 Year - Bushmills

Stronachie 12 Year, is also known as "The Lost Distillery"

Def Agree with the Islay guys above, dont give it, unless they love it.

Glenlivet, Glenfiddich are good ones also.

Jameson 12 isn't bad.

Definitely an acquired taste (that smokey/peaty taste and smell). Kinda smells like a tire fire and tastes like water used to douse said tire fire.

Clearly I'm a vodka and rum kind of guy (off topic: if you haven't tried Tito's vodka you don't know what you're missing!)

Oban 14 or 1984, it is SO good that yes... it can be justified.

Glenlivet 18 is another good one. 14 if you want to keep the cost down.

Are they a big scotch drinker? maybe find out what types he enjoys right now...

AnCnoc - ~$55

Seems to be liked by most people, even if they aren't scotch lovers.
