you'll get better suggestions if you can say what cuisine and price point you're looking for.

BEST NEW RESTAURANT
Winner: Una Pizza + Wine

Una Pizza + Wine owners Jayme MacFayden, Steve Smee and Kelly Black reconceived and rebuilt the former Wicked Wedge into the hottest new pizzeria and Mediterranean-influenced joint in town. With its long, narrow space lined with an equally long banquette and bar, and a tiny dining room out front, Una generates infectious energy to go with an excellent list of pizzas and Basque pintxos. From the simple pizza Bianca, topped with buffalo mozzarella and basil, to the spicy salami pizza sparkling with chilis, San Marzano tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella and grana padano cheese, Una pumps out a primo pie. 618 17 Ave S.W., 403-453-1183, unapizzeria.com

the woman loves this place, depending on the wine our meals for the two of us range from $80-$120. a lot of italian ingredients on the menu so if you are not up on what they are it makes ordering difficult (since you wont know wtf you are ordering haha)

only down side for special events is they dont take reservations

no matter what these silly, trendy, money-grubbing pseudo-neopolitan restaurateurs want you to think, pizza is fast/street food... and it would be like going out for hot dogs on your anniversary :nut:

I always found Rush to be pretty decent.

Dude it's only been 1 year. Take her to a nice restaurant but don't break the bank. Open Sesame, chop, misato would be some examples of places to take her

If you really want to put it on a pedestal you can take her to places more like Catch or Rouge

The Muse in Kensington is always nice

Rouge, no question about it. Get the epicurean adventure with the wine pairing (half or full) (I think that's what it's called) and the experience is quite a bit better and "fancy".

i agree, Catch is great, and not expensive either. their prices are on par with any seafood/steakhouse, including the Keg.

The Living Room on 17 Avenue, been there and it's awesome.
NoTable in the west, supposed to be nice.

You can check restaurant ratings on Zagat, I'm surprised it's not more popular.

Teatro sucks balls.

Check out Mercato.

Damn. I had two really good experiences at Teatro's.

Vero Bistro is also really good and highly rated.

When I went the service wasn't the best, not bad, but not the best. The reason why I think it sucks though is the food, I can't remember what it was that I had but it wasn't great, and I don't find the menu very appealing.

I can't find the Mercato menu but I think the food is better, and I love the open kitchen.

We've had a few of these threads now. You can also look at;

Il Sogno
Capo
Alloy
Q Haute Cusine
Sky 360, although last time I went there I enjoyed the apps more than the main.

Mercato
Rouge

Are my default go to, didn't enjoy Rouge the last time we were there but that was a first. If you are looking for something more low key, but consistent good food, check out Garlic Clove a few doors down from Mercato, just be ready to smell like garlic for awhile. Also, worth a mention is Jacqueline Suzanne's (sp?).

Sometimes I can't help but laugh at how jaded some of you guys are. Life is a journey, and what's the point of having it if you don't enjoy it?

If the OP wants to take his girl out, whatever. He didn't ask for your opinions on how "it's only been a year". It's not like he just started seeing this girl.

OP, some of my favs are...

+ Blink
+ Muse (LOVE Muse)
+ Teatro
+ Mercato (my fav.)
+ Jacqueline Suzanne's (shameless plug)
+ Sugo Cafe Italia

I *loved* my last few trips to Muse and have never had a bad exerpience at Mercato. Muse is very upscale, trendy, great food. Mercato isn't exactly intimate, but it's a great experience and you'll both LOVE the food.

Listen to this guy. If she goes to acad or thinks she's an artist of any kind Jacqueline Suzannes will soak her pants.

If you enjoy it, then so be it. But I personally find it is overpriced and not even that great. Da Guido is good and the calamari at La Brezza is the best I've had anywhere.

Come to think of it, I don't understand how Italians have managed to charge so much for food that is relatively simple.

+1 on Jacqueline's. All the dates I taken there love the decor and atmosphere, and the prices are fair; the food is fantastic. Keep up the good work there, Cam et al.

Is that even still open? I wanted to go with the Mrs for our anniversary but their webpage is super-outdated I assumed it had closed!

EDIT - Oh it looks like they fixed all the links and stuff.

Laurier Lounge is probably my favorite date spot in the city, doesn't get any more romantic imho.

Plus, the food is superb. Solid Quebecois beer selection too.

They recently renamed my favorite burger in the world (their filet mignon burger) in honor of Warren Buffet, who ate there on his last trip to Calgary.

Sometimes I hesitate to recommend it, because I want to be able to go there without a reso. :D
