I'm looking for a used beater and am trying to find out at what point, does a used car need an inspection for either insurance or registration.

If the car is currently an Alberta registered car, does it need an inspection or is it good to go?

Only if it's out of province, which is why the inspection is called "out of province inspection".

Cool. I didn't know if they did safety inspections on older vehicles registered in Ab when they transferred ownership.

Thanks Rage

It really depends on your insurance company. Some dont ask, some ask for it at 10 years, some 12, some 15 etc.

Yeah, your issue will be with your insurance company, not with the registration.

Meloche will ask for inspection on anything older than 12 years. That's a pretty common policy. Call your insurance company and ask.
I've heard State Farm doesn't need inspections. But I can't confirm that.

State farm does require inspections, when I registered my 87 porsche 944 turbo with them (~2005) they required a safety inspection.

The industry standard for insurance inspections is 12 years. It used to be all over the place (some companies were 10, some 15, some 20) but almost all have now settled at 12. As for the amount of time you have to get that done, well that will still vary from company to company.

Called Insurance company, and they are also 12 years and older. So got to find a 2000 or newer P.O.S.

Or maybe take the initiative to buy a reliable older beater that will pass a $100 inspection. If you think you are doing yourself a favor by purchasing an inspection exempt vehicle to save a couple bucks, there is a world of hurt waiting for you.

it's okay, this car is never going to be driven more than a couple hundred feet.

Did you ask for full coverage> ? I know with RBC I have insured older cars (yes roadworthy) and with PLPD they never have required an inspection :dunno:
