Whoa, someone's in a bit of trouble for that one. I wonder how much damage that hoe took.

Should send that into Global news, they reported the story but didn't show any pics or video.

that's some pretty shitty construction for it to be toppled like that, not even bolted down?

Was just going to LOL about the comments on the facebook pages saying the bridge was a shitty construction.

No, bridges aren't bolted down. Mostly all bridges "float" on pads, so they are allowed to move with expansion. This is why there are expansion joints at both ends. Hard bolting the bridge would actually increase internal forces so much that it would destroy itself in no time.

Bottom line is, bridges are meant to take vertical loads and atmospheric loads at a minimum. They didn't design this one thinking of dumbass truckers. Because the way this hoe was loaded, it would have impacted the girder, the rear tracks would have been stopped from moving further back, and the arm would have started moving upwards to pivot on the rear tracks. This would have created an incredible amount of immediate uplift and sideways force on the whole bridge section, and basically lifted it off it's pads. If the hoe was loaded 180 degrees, it wouldn't have speared itself into the bridge and instead bent the arm, damaged the girder but probably still slide underneath.

I've seen this same incident in Lethbridge, but thankfully the bridge was over a river and mult-lane and extremely heavy, plus the trucker was travelling at less than half the speed so tthe bridge stayed put. Only a girder was damaged. This is why we are seeing more advanced warning signs on highways for "too tall loads" on certain key bridges.

Its impressive that they managed to break the railroad tracks.
