Wheldon hurt in huge crash at Vegas

Sunday - 10/16/2011, 4:24pm ET
By JOHN MARSHALL
AP Sports Writer
LAS VEGAS (AP) - IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon has been seriously injured in a massive 15-car wreck has sent cars flying through the air early in Sunday's Las Vegas Indy 300.

Paul Tracy, who was involved in the wreck, said a team of doctors were working on Wheldon, but there was no word of his injuries. A helicopter lifted off from the speedway, but there was no indication if Wheldon was onboard.

Pippa Mann also appeared to be shaky as she was helped to an ambulance.

The wreck coming out of Turn 2 on the 12th lap left Townsend Bell upside down, smoldering cars strewn all over the track and debris nearly halfway up the straightaway of the 1.5-mile oval.

Wheldon was in line to win $5 million had he won the race.

Such an insane crash! So much carnage, from the sounds of it, everyone was not impressed with this track and the amount of cars to begin with.

They expected a big crash, but this is insane.

So many cars together, it was kind of inevitable that any crash would turn into something crazy like that. Opened wheeled cars on a banked oval is pretty dangerous. I think Schumacher once said that's one type of racing he would never do because its so sketchy.

I got to meet Greg Moore at Laguna Seca just shortly before he died at Fontana. ;-) Nice guy, massive talent, a real loss back then.

I have Greg's car number on all my helmets. He was a hero of mine and a guy I looked up to.

RIP Dan. It's a tragic day for racing.

Props to the medical/fire teams for being on the track so fast. That one fire crew was already driving beside that 1 car on fire before it even stopped. Its good to see the best emergency staff are there to prevent further injuries or death.

Sad day in any sport when a member dies.:(

what a brutal crash. still, a testament to the safety technology on those cars as most of the guys were able to walk away from the cars on their own power.... RIP

This is really upsetting. Havent been an IRL fan and safety concerns being one of the reasons.

I was listening to RaceLine radio. Rick Moore, Greg's dad hadnt been to a race since Greg death. First race he went to see was Vegas yesterday.Fck.

Wow, that crash looks like something you'd see in a movie, especially the flying car. Those guys had no chance at that speed. That is some scary shit...

Heard on the news that Dan's wife was originally from Red Deer.

Came across this photo on Wheldon's car...

The roll hoop isn't there. That is a vital part in the safety structure of the car...

I was at the track for both the Nascar truck race and the Izod Indy race.

I expected a crash on the first few laps because they were so close together in a pack. After 5 laps things still didn't spread out and the whole pack was just as tight as the first lap.
10th lap they were still just as tight.

The crash happened just to my right and so very fast.
Smoke, tires, car parts, and fire was about all we could see. The saftey crew did a great job getting to the cars as fast as they could and some even before they where stopped.

I grabbed the binoculars. I could see that most of the drivers where getting out or being helped out. I wasn't able to see all the cars and Dan's car was one of them. Pulling the binoculars away I noticed that the blades on the Medi Vac helicopter where going. Minutes later there was a stretcher being rushed out to the waiting chopper.

45mins later the chopper came back and the reports over the PA system were "We still don't have any news about Dan".

Paul Tracey made a comment on the PA system "As soon as Dan was brought into the in-field care center, we where all rushed out of the room. There must have been 20 doctors around him".

The stands where very quiet as many of us deep inside that Dan had passed away but where all hoping to hear that he was doing ok.

The drivers and owners went into the media center for over 30mins. They were fobidden to talk to the press when they came back out.

I grabbed the Binoculars as the drivers came out and was able to focus in on Danica's face. She was crying and her whole crew came to give her a hug. It was at that point it struck me that Dan had passed. 5 mins later they made the public announcment.

It was a very spooky feeling.

Rest In Peace Dan.
You will be missed by all

That's some kind of experience all right. Though you probably want it to be memorable, certain not this way.
