phew! rings are still good. Now I know it was the old PCV valve was causing the oil loss + blue smoke at high rpm.

I guess I also needed new spark plugs so those are in.
The mechanic said that one of my axle boots are torn and the other is cracked but not leaking. I'm getting those boots replaced soon now.

Yaaaaaa, no expensive rebuild.:D

those compression numbers seem pretty high for a ls engine.

i compression tested my engine with a $50 self tester. some how i got 185psi on all 4. i think i did it worng...

Compression numbers depend on how the test was done, u can get 240 on all 4 cylinders, it just depends on how many times u crank it over. U can still have done rings and get normal compression numbers, theres so much carbon buildup in the cylinders that it shows good compression. I think the only thing a comp test is good for is showing a loss of comprssion in one or 2 cylinders. Like if u blow your engine it could look like 185 185 43 185. A blown head gasket could look like 175 175 132 175.

I just found this too:
"You can have good compression and still be blowing tons of oil through the rings.
There are 3 sets of rings on your pistons...

Compression Rings
Oil Control Rings
Oil Scraper Rings

I am way too tired to go into detail of how each of them work, but they each do their own part in making the bottom end of your engine work right.

I have a 91 LS with 180 all the way across on my compression test and I am still blowing through 1-2 quarts of oil every week."

If I am still using oil, I'll get a leakdown test to ID the source.

A leakdown test is about as good as a compression test:thumbsdow , if ur burning oil at high revs ur rings are shot, if u burn oil when u start the car up its your valve seals, The only way to be sure is take your engine apart and measure the tolarances!
