So, this sucker is almost open, anybody check it out/see the pretty lights on the wall? Theres a bit of talk on it on this forum.

Btw, every pedestrian hand rail on this site, was all built and installed by me, and my crew. Been a pretty cool project, and should be open soon. When you see it, you can think, hey, a beyond member had a big part in this project.

:D

Heres some teasers.

Should see it lit up in the morning. All of those shapes on the walls glow blue. All of the hand rails in the plaza will be lit as well.

That is pretty awesome. I've seen it a bunch of times, can't wait for it to open. Looks good btw.

What's the proposed date it will be open?

Those look pretty interesting. I've detailed a lot of hand/guard rails for the City, I've never seen that design before.

On a side note, had a chat with mayor nenshi on site Saturday. Likes our hand rails ;)

I drove by it the other day and had no idea what they were doing there, saw the lights. It looks pretty cool.

Walk by it pretty much every other day. Looks very nice.

Was hoping it would be open last Friday to help relieve the congestion after the game but obviously was not open.

Opens today. Wonder how much it'll help the traffic after Flames games.

Just so I know, this underpass basically just connects 10th and 11th ave farther east, right?

No it connects 10th ave to 9th Ave so you can go towards Inglewood.

Just wonder how many people actually need to go to 9th Ave though.. That will be the deciding factor in how well this works lol.

You can go past 9th and head into downtown as well (or go on 6th to head west). Hopefully enough people are heading there to alleviate the traffic that piles onto 11th.

This is going to be a key peice of infrastructure helping move people from Memorial (via langevin bridge) and Macleod, 9th ave.

Not to mention, it's going to totally change the egress from events at the stampede grounds. I'm very excited about this.

Oh yeah.

I think it will help if they have a guy directing traffic or better yet put one of those huge temporary construction electronic signs somewhere on olympic way before 11th that says they can go to 9th ave or 6th ave SW through the underpass.

I have no arguments about the location of it, or the need for it.. But I do find the 70 million dollar price tag a bit much...Everything the city builds doesn't have to be a bloody monument..Its a double whammy , they spend more money than needed adding designer touches, which adds to the overall tab, which then gets subjected to the percentage arts funding grab off municipal projects..
Edit: QR reported it as 70 million, City website says 28 million.. Who knows..

Not sure how much a "bare bones" underpass would cost in that location. This does have to go under railway tracks, which means from a structural perspective, it's pretty intense.

Also, this is a key pedestrian link between Downtonw/East village and the location of Calgary's premiere tourist attractions (Stampede, Flames, Casino, the new Cowboys nightclub etc) It pretty much has to be visually appealing, or it's a waste of time.

In short, saving $1million or so would be a case of walking over a dollar to pick up a dime.

I was involved with the engineering and am very happy to see the project come to fruitation. I still think the lighting elements are tacky as hell, but will give the druggies down that way a nice trip :)

Dont quote me, thats just the last i heard.

The lit handrail i think is a bit excessive, but i just build the posts for it to go on, so it really doesnt matter to me. I was paid to build them, and thats enough for me. What a pain in the ass some of the details were on this job

The city paid 28m. The rest by the east village developers.

Looks like the CMLC picked up the other 42 million, which is basically the City again.. Some of the costs will be levied against developers but how much is questionable..
Its funny in other world class cities, the infrastructure is so functional , the engineering itself is a work of art, without having to decorate it.
Leave the glitz to the private sector, it would be a lot more impressive if the city would just concentrate on building stuff that actually works.
In my mind public infrastructure should first fill a functional purpose, be built to last, and be engineered/built to have the lowest maintenance costs possible.. In Calgary , we rarely get any of that. We get grandiose bullshit..

"engineering itself is a work of art, without having to decorate it"

This... They need to send these "designers/engineers" over to places like Germany where they get this concept...

Awesome shortcut to and from the dome. Zero traffic last night.

Wonder how good the sewage system is there, my guess is massive flood next year when we get our first hail storm.

Rage, a lot of our streets are designed to fill with water during heavy storms. I can't remember the technical term for it, but it's something like "temporary storm outflow surface storage" or something.

In Calgary, those summer storms can deposit something like 20x the volume of a regular rainfall in a very short period. Designing the storm sewers to handle this would be incredibly expensive. So, they are designed to back up onto the streets.

They have actually planned for that. If you are southbound on 4th street, look to your right, where the plaza is. There is a building with two doors, thats the wet well. Its got two massive pumps in it, and its designed to transport all of the water away from the over pass. I installed the aluminum sub level framing in there. Fun stuff.

You have no idea how happy I am that this is open (and it looks awesome too  ) I work at a condo nearby and it is now possible to leave work after a game without sitting with my blinker on for 5 minutes lol
