The idea for years was to build a s13 Silvia, and put a 2JZ into it. Finally started the project with support of my 'bubby' (nicknamed derived from "boyfriend" and "hubby" lol,) and the boys over at RPS.

The "shell" was donated by Tanner over at RPS cause he felt bad that my original shell I bought from someone else was a rust bucket under the rear subframe, and we had to scrap that one. We only kept the doors which were mint.

Originally, this was going to be a mild, drop in 2JZ, but seeing that we now have all winter, it's going to be a little more fun.

First things first. Strip her down, spot blast what little rust there is, clean up the interior, engine bay, wiring.

We were going to use an AEM standalone, but for future upgradability, cleaner wiring, and so that I could use that very cute Racepack IQ3 dash, we sold the AEM and are going with the Haltech Sport 2000.

Body:
199x 240sx
Extreme Dimension S13 Silvia conversion fenders, hood, front
Completely rewired with a "Painless" type fuse box/wiring kit.

Engine:
Going to have the stock 2Jz rebuilt.
Single Turbo (66mm)
Modified stock intake, with 70mm throttle body
800cc/minute injectors
Ported head
Crower Stage2 cams
Big front mount intercooler.

Fuel System:
New fuel lines, twin in tank fuel pumps, OR a Stealth 340 in tank pump and a Bosch "044" pusher pump.

Interior:
Full NHRA legal roll cage
Sparco seats (buckets)
New carpet,
Cleaned up dash.

Aymen masking off, getting ready to spot blast the rust.

My Crower camshafts and pulleys
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/crower2jz.jpg
The Cams in the motor (when the plan was just a drop in. It is all going to come apart for a complete "freshen", and head porting.
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/crower002.jpg
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/2jz.jpg

This is most all of the wiring Tanner stripped out of the car. Gross. It's all going to be brand new and "minimized".

Stripping down all the stuff I don't need from the factory engine harness.

Shiny parts arrived ;)

they sent the WRONG tail lights. I clearly ordered the clear/red like the Origin labs ones, but got these clears. $100 to anyone that wants them....

http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/taillights.jpg

The new wiring harness. We decided it's best to wait on wiring anything until the roll cage is installed.
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/harness.jpg

My new front suspension. Everything in the front end is brand new. Brakes, rotors, control arms, stabilizer bushings, inner and outer tie rod ends. The Struts are lightly used, but the springs are new "softer" units. We are re-using the steering rack, Tanner said it was in great shape.

You could always just paint the bottom half of them with some testors red transparent spray paint + clearcoat if you wanted. Should turn out good and save you some money.

Then engine bay is done, and looks BRAND NEW. I love it. Cleaned up and in primer. The wheel wells are as well, and Tanner is going to swap out all my front end parts.

Thanks guys. Boyfriend and I were off work yesterday so we drove down to Montana to pick up the roll cage. I am glad we went with the chromoly, feels about half the weight of the regular stuff. Bubby says the chromoly is .083" thick walls, and the mild steel would have needed to be .134" walls to meet the NHRA/IHRA rules.

Our appointment to take the car in for the roll cage install is Wednesday, very exciting!

Tanner finishing off the front. The old bolts that were too corroded were replaced, the ones that were not bad, Aymen wire wheeled, painted, and anti-seized them all.

We re-used the rack, but changed iner and outer tie rods, did the 5 lug swap, new calipers, rotors, pads and brake lines. New control arms, stabiizer rods were stock with energy poly bushings.

We also finally sold the AEM. To a guy in Thailand! The boyfriend is crazy, and we are talking about possibly making this a true flex fuel vehicle with a flex fuel in-tank sensor from a Ford Flex Fuel truck, and a ECU that is flex fuel capable.... but that's just crazy talk now. The chances of seeing E85 In Alberta with our COLD weather is minimal according to some friends that work in the industry, but it would still be something different and cool.

I cant take credit. It was the BF's idea. In the past, he has used a torch and scraper, but I think he said he saw the idea in an import magazine.

Yes, you spread dry ice, let it sit a few minutes, tap the area lightly with a hammer, then scrape it up. It comes up very easy, but we spent $60 in dry ice.

Still had to use the torch method on vertical surfaces.

I wasn't sure, I had to ask. Yes, it does have to be Tig welded. I work at a general automotive and transmission shop. One of our techs builds some crazy hotrods on the side, he will be doing it at home.

Looks like we are taking it over there tonight.

YES!!!! Finally lol. The roll cage kit we ordered out of the US, and wasted time picking up, was a piece of crap.

Only thing out of the whole kit we ended up using was the main hoop. After that fiasco, instead of risking it again, we ordered bulk Chromoly tubing, and had to wait for delivery, and our good friend bent up a cage that fits MUCH better. Both door bars are swing-out and removable as well.

So, the cage is all done and TIG welded, window net is in, engine and transmission are installed in the car.

weather permiting, and if we can borrow a trailer, should get the car back tomorrow

From the start, we were going to ditch the Toyota coils and ignitor and go with LS Truck Coils which are self ignited. Cleans up wiring, and more reliable.

Deciding how to mount em was an issue though. They were a goofy shape, and as designed by GM, meant for a spark plug wire. These coils are dead reliable to over 200hp per cylinder.

After staring at the engine for hours, and trying to place the coils, we decided the only acceptable solution was to somehow install them as coil on plugs, and not use wires.

After pestering Boz and Jody at Auto Value for a bit, they let bubby back there to look through their coil boot selection, and he found something that works almost perfect with the LS coils.

Tonight, we wired the coils, and injectors, and trying to decide how to layout all the other sensor and actuators.

Thanks to Western Auto and Truck parts for setting us up with the killer LS coils.

Not an exciting update....

We were trying to decide on an intake manifold, and after reviewing the available options, we felt the stock intake is what we wanted in terms of runner length, but the boys at RPS and Bubby decided that we neede a much bigger plenum.

So, the BF cut the stock intake open, and started porting, and flow matching the runners. Tanner got to work on making a phenolic spacer that isolates the upper intake from the lower. We could not find one to buy, so it had to be made. We did find a lower manifold to head isolator. All in an effort to keep the intake as cool as possible for big boost pump gas runs.

Then, the BF made a new plenum cover, and Tanner tig welded it all back together. The Supra throttle body was tossed in favor of a 4.6 Mustang 70mm junkyard one.

The plenum ended up about 40% bigger. Should be good for some top end gains. All the runners flow with a few CFM.

Every piece we take off the car, we test, check, and if it's not good, we replace it.

Good thing too, because the factory alternator was tested at Auto Value, and it actually started throwing sparks.

Bought an upgraded one from a 99 Lexus GS400. They are 100 amps instead of 70 or 80.

http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/100amp.jpg

Tanner and the BF decided to tear the motor apart and check it out "just in case", and this is what we found. This is why some JDM motors blow up lol. Tons of carbon and chunks etc. Bad for everything especially raised boost.

We will be doing a "backyard rebuild" since the bores are scratch free and smooth. Bubby will hone the cylinders quickly by hand, just to give it a surface again. We will check rings and bearings, and replace only what is out of spec.

I guess the 2jz parts are very beefy.

Checking to see if we can re-use the rod bearings with plasti gage. Cam in right where the BF says it's good, so they get to stay

http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/plastigage.jpg

The main bearings were also still in very good condition, so we are re-using them as well. The crank looked great as well.

http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/mainbearings.jpg
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/2jzcrank

The pistons were very carboned, and the piston rings packed full of carbon. We are ordering new rings tomorrow, Bubby wants Total Seals. Tonight the guys hand honed the cylinders to give them some bite for the new rings.

The block cleaned up, and looks new. :D

Painted the engine bay so we can start putting things back together.

Got a 70mm Ford Truck throttle body from Pick N Pull to replace that ugly toyota thing.

Replaced the transmission mount that came in the ebay kit with a nice chromoly one that fits our transmission, painted the mounts.

Got the sand blasted rear subframe back, painted it, installed the Energy Suspension inserts.

Decided to buy a second Aeromotive Stealth pump, and mount 2 in the tank. Got the pump home, only to find we misplaced the original one we had. Tanner is working on a dual pump in-tank mount.

That's all I can think of today.

To get the diff and gear ratio we wanted, turned out cheapest to buy an entire 1992 Q45. Has 3.56 gearing instead of the 4.11 that our GTR dff had, plus, the almighty internet says the hubs/knuckles are aluminum so we can also save some weight.

So Bubby finished the Megasquirt. LOL. I chuckle every time I hear that name.... megasquirt lol. They also have a microsquirt for the smaller guys ;) lol

Originally plan was AEM, then Haltech, now MS3x. This build has changed into a "low buck", "lots of work" build, so this fits perfect.

The BF says that the new boards are very good. 4 layers, dual processors, plus it actually has 2 "secret" features he likes that other ECU's don't have. Plus, he built it so it cost us like $500.

After the build, the BF had Marc P. (DiyEfi, a local guy that has done some development work for MS) throw it on his bench and test it all. Works perfect!

http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/ms3f.jpg

For the Surpra's VR crank sensor, VRin jumpered to Tachselect
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/ms3e.jpg

Again, for the 2JZ, both resistor things turned fully counter clockwise as a start.
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/ms3d.jpg

On the expander board, no jumper7 for VR, and both pots again full counterclockwise
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/ms3c.jpg

Harness end, with MAP sensor
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/ms3b.jpg

Other end with diagnostic LED,s and SD car slot for logging, and programming USB
http://members.shaw.ca/sophisticated/ms3a.jpg

For the 2JZ, Bubby says
since both magnetic pick-ups (rear cam and crank), both line up at the same time at TDC, the ecu can get confused, so it will be neccessary to knock off one of the 12 teeth on the crank wheel. This will also allow us to retard or advance the intake cam without issues.

We are re-using the factory pistons.

Bubby "softened" them slightly, then blasted the tops, and had them re-coated.

Also, the boys thought the wrist pin fit was too tight from the factory, so the pistons were treated to a "pin fit"

Upper rad mounts made (we had a factory Koyo thick S14 rad that fits perfect).

Tanner laying out and mocking up intercooler piping.

Beginning the fender roll and pull....

The new high pressure side power steering hose to adapt s13 to toyota.

Couple updates.....

Wanted to get rid of the oil "cooler" ugly thing where the filter goes. To do that, you need a really long filter bolt. We bought one at Mopac, but it was too short. We had a couple made, from what I hear, it took 3 Millwrights 3 hours to make these ;) Joking.

Thanks Simon!!!

WOW. Time flies. Bubby and I (now Fiance) had a baby, so super duper busy. We also bought a "stock" Silvia so that I can have a baby seat ;)

Got behind doing updates, but FINALLY the car hit the track last night up in Edmonton. We loaded it up on the trailer, and went up to do some testing. The car has never been driven, so first couple runs, Bubby was driving and taking it easy.

Made 4 passes, and they were roughly 11.0, 10.9, 10.4 and finally a 10.16. The purpose was just to make sure everything worked, brakes, steering, that the car was stable etc, so we were VERY happy for a first outing. Found a few minor glitches, and we decided to save that 'on kill' runs for another day ;)

Did I mention the PIZZA at the flying J is literally the best Pizza EVER!! And makes a great stop before the long drive home. :D

Here is a quick update, I will update a bit more to get caught up when I have more time.

Here is Toma on the dyno trying the transmission brake and the 2 step. This is how eventually the car will be launched. Engage trans brake, put the pedal to the floor holding the button. In this video, it bounces off the 5500 rpm 2 step rev limiter and made 20 psi in less than 2.5 seconds.

At the track, we took it easy and set it to 5000 rpm and 12 pounds of boost for launch.

Car still needs:
Interior work
Minor suspension adjustment
Full exhaust (we ran out of time, just put a small muffler in the down pipe and dumped it)
More boost
Get the nitrous working
Torque converter re-adjustment

Tried again. Again could only get 22 to 23 psi. Even with no vacuum line to wastegate lol. 10.9 at 137 accidentally launching in drive. Then a 12 something at 137 blowing the tires off on the line. Then a 10.11 at 134

Our other Friend Derek from Caliber Auto did the final prep and paint.

9.74 at 147!!!!

Medicine Hat today. First pass off the trailer 9.85 at 147. Then the 9.74. Then a flat tire. Super super happy. Got it to 28 psi boost and a quick late night tune check last night. We have 2 or 3 psi more boost to go and then nitrous.

Will post slips and pics later tonight or tomorrow.

Found a small issue with the Megasquirt ignition settings, and a large manifold leak that was the actual cause of our low boost problems. When they were putting the engine together, a set of insulating washers could not be found in time, so a cylinder of teflon was cut into washers and that's what we tried. Figuring they might be a problem at the time, everyone just forgot to check. And sure enough, when hot enough, they didn't clamp the intake to the head, and physically all bolts loosened off a little. Doing nothing but just tightening them down a bit, boost went from 16 to 26. All the insulating works, manifold stays very cool, but we will have to replaced the washers with the proper ones, or just skip them.

Our friend Derek with his awesome Xtreme Drag Radial Mustang rented the Medicine Hat track so he and Hubby could do some trouble shooting and tuning before big SCSN race in Vegas next month. About 10 cars showed up, including a GTR that ran 9.8, a Cadillac CTSV that ran low 10's at 140. and '03 2 valve Mustang that ran low 11's at 130 on 18's and pump gas. Everyone was too busy to take pics, but Sergio got these of Derek's 3000hp Mustang next to our little Silvia.

For now its kinda racey.

This is the first time I have ever shopped for subwoofers with someone that includes light weight versus performance as a factor.

The exhaust is worse. titanium. Or vibrant has some aluminum mufflers.

Or thinking about spending 800 on door panels because they are 2 pounds instead of 8 (and damn sexy)

It was an awesome day...have to do more of these track rentals. It was nice to be able to run flat out without worrying about getting kicked off. I was the one in the CTS-V...ran a best of 10.21. And ran a 139.8...can't believe the 4400 lb car is going almost 140 with very minor mods and a 150 nitrous shot.

I have some vids but unfortunately nothing of your car running down the track. I was always in the pits when Toma went and I watched from a distance.

9.41!!! Very exciting. Last race of the season!!! we keep testing, and trying things, and finally after Medicine hat, thought the car was ready to give as all she had.

We even put a lightweight driver in the car (pic below) ;)

First pass, blew the tires off, spun hard, lifted off the gas, and ran a 11.2@142. Second pass, made a few adjustments, a better burnout, and it ran a 9.41 @ 128, coasting from 900 feet and on. Turns out, the accessory belt flew off somewhere during the burnout. Bubby says this caused low voltage to the fuel pumps, so fule pressure fell by 20 psi, and car went dangerous lean. It then overheated just before the 1/8th mile. There was a 8 second Camaro in the lane next to us, so Toma stayed on the gas a little longer, but the then decided to let off and coast.

We are VERY excited about the 1/8 mile mph. 122.5 compared to the 8 second cars 122! A little work on the launch and 60 foot, and how aggressively we apply the boost control. It was a 2 run day again, but a very good day.

So, what's next?

The engine always had a vibration at low RPM, we suspect it is that massive adapter flywheel, so it will all get torn down, checked over, and balanced.

Weight out. We have about 30 more pounds we can remove from the car.

Interior. Sound deadener, Seibon Carbon Fiber door panels, a Dash, centre console, mount other seat, stereo, and subwoofer. Shopping with subs with bubby online was interesting. First time I have looked at stereo equipment based on weight lol.

Move the shifter foreward, it's hard to reach.

Transmission has a leak a the shifter linkage.

Torque converter is too loose, and flashes up PAST where the engine make peak power, so it is hurting not only power and dyno numbers, but drivability.

Lightweight 4" exhaust, either aluminum, or Titanium

Turbo upgrade. The T72 is making awesome power, but datalogs are showing too much back pressure.

Here is the reqruied fire jacket I am thinking about for me when I race the car next year ;) http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/800/856/856-J21124.jpg

Just goes to show, a project car is never done lol

Juice. Sort of. That last run was the first nitrous run and the nitrous was set up to kick in 0.6 seconds after launch at 10 percent flow. Then progress to 100 percent flow by 3 seconds. Bottle was cold so pressure was only 720. Its jetted to an advertised 90 shot.
