So the boy picked up a nice "little" tile job and I'm helping him on it. We received the tile yesterday; I'm thinking we'll be here awhile.

At least you'll have extra to fill up the holes on that backboard.

I see why you were looking for a strong back-to hump all that tile into the house!
I helped my BIL on a job in Elbow Valley. Some nice houses out there for sure.

Lol Tom. Not me this time. Hired a fellow beyonder to help. Started on Friday and he's good!! Got him doing cuts and mixing too.
I'll definitely be posting pics. It's the entire basement including bedrooms and both bathrooms, all in 16x16 slate on diagonal.

For a residential job?!!!!! What kind of tile?
You say "Your guys"....you have a flooring/tile company?

It's commercial lol, we are doing 4 floors of BHP Billitons offices here. They have 3500 yards of carpet tile to do too!

Yes, we run a flooring crew and having a flooring company as part of our business. I'm a project manager for a commercial construction management company.

Ohh, oh. Well no biggey there then. Plenty of commercial jobs I've done that are well over the 100,000 sq ft range. I've done the tile in YVR, Metrotown Mall, Richmond Centre, Pacific Centre....all over 100,000 s.f.

This is for just a residential house! And just the basement, at that!!

Nice job Dave

Floor guys are my favourite out of all the trades, it really is what completes a project. Good installers are worth their weight in gold.

I like the colour and the texture however I can imagine how much it will cost to furnish the room to match the tile. That shouldn't be a problem for someone who owns a house like that I assume.

Yeah I don't think that will be a problem lol. The tile contract was just under $30,000 to the homeowner. :bigpimp:

Is the tile pretty even? My experiences with slate have been a bit "bumpy" lol.

Yeah, I installed slate in the kitchen of my last place. It looked pretty cool (colours were a bit more muted than all this red), but the surface was really uneven and I felt like I was always stepping on the floor of a cave.

Great job though Dave - as always.

Yeah un-gauged slate is VERY inconsistent. Varies as much as 1/2 an inch within the same piece. If installed poorly, the lippage from one piece to another can be a tripping hazard. When I install, I may pick up each piece and turn it as much as 270 degrees as well as use more/less mud in order to get smooth transitions. Pretty hard to do with just a notched trowel and thinset only. I use a very thick bed of sand/cement as well.
You've walked on my slate floor in the poker room, Jeff...that's all un-gauged slate.

Yeah, your basement isn't bad. Much better installation job than my own. :) When I installed it, I did try to adjust the mud with limited success. I suppose that is why you're a professional tiler and I'm... not.

I did my bathroom a few months ago and had to pull up a couple of tiles that were sticking up.

Now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to fill the uneven gaps next to my bathtub.

Love slate floors, it gives one so many different color options to work with.
