Does anyone have suggestions for shoes that would be comfortable for standing in for long periods? This is for an office environment, so they need to be at least somewhat dressy.
No Crocs or running shoes.

The backstory is that I have some back isues, and I have a desk that can be raised to standing height. That helps my back feel better, but after a few hours, I find my knees start to ache.

I already have some anti-fatigue matting, but it's the cheap stuff. I'd be open to suggestions as to what kinds of matting would help as well.

I found Rockfort to be the best shoes for standing long hours and some of them are pretty dressy as well

I run commercial construction projects and am on my feet a lot, especially on concrete.

I wear these, they are plain but would look good with dressier pants/typical office attire (I wear jeans most of the time but I have worn dress pants with them):

Have to say, one of the most comfortable things for my feet that I've found in a long time. And the lazy ass in me in the mornings really appreciates the pull on/kick off aspect of them.

I find Cole-Haan shoes are pretty comfortable for a dress shoe.

Is there a reason why you haven't considered getting insoles for your shoes? Do they not help that much while standing?

Have you considered a gel pro mat? A bit pricey, but definitely comfy.

Some Rockports have a gel sole developed with addidas, Look for those. This is what I use, and I have had knee probs, and its all good now.

I'm a big fan of the "superfeet" brand of insoles, I use them in nearly all my pairs of shoes, and I find them very supportive and comfortable. However, even with these, standing for long periods is painful.

These are great suggestions, keep 'em comming.

+1 for insoles

I had sciatic nerve problems a few years ago, went to a chiropractor to no avail, finally just bought insoles for my shoes and problem next to disappeared. Recently I have upgraded to custom orthotics, cost around $400 but most benefit programs cover most of the cost.

So that being said, buy the shoes that look good, throw those bitches in and enjoy!

Makes a huge difference, I did one show on a concrete floor that absolutely killed. They've tried to cut event budgets by not putting padding under the carpet and that is brutal as well. Some companies will even put double padding under their carpet which is heaven.

I've heard Ecco shoes are very comfortable but I don't have any personal experience.

Surprised by that, Redwings are so easy on the feet.. You may want to go check out Kensington Orthotics, he has some great inserts.
