Anyone else love car designs from the eighties? I know underneath they're not the best but from the outside I think a lot of these cars are absolutely amazing. I personally have only owned one of these, a 89 190e 2.6 and it was a pretty fun car to drive and was super reliable.

The Delorean is a classic and will always be.

E30 M3 widebody is sexy, as is the 190E Cosworths.

Crush all the others especially that Volvo! :barf:

i personally think cars from the 80s suck, but I can see how someone who was born in the 90s might think they are cool because they seem "retro."

Born in the 80's but I see your point, I still think they look good regardless.

I hate how all new cars have super high window sills and how the window lines (back to front) point into the ground. I prefer when the lines are parallel to the ground.

I think the only car that is actually ugly as fuck but you have to love it because it was on every 10 year old boys wall and is nostalgic was the almighty Countach.http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-1980-1989/1985-Lamborghini-Countach-White-Front-Angle-Open-Doors-st.jpg

The 80's cars bring back a bit of nostalgia for me, but I hate the 80's interior design. 90's cars interiors were better, but the cars got rid of hard lines and went jelly bean shape.

You've missed the point.

Just a guess from your prior posts, but I'm thinking you're around 30 years old and live in your parents basement.

Anyway, I longed for the following, but ended up with a '78 Chev Caprice Classic. Lol--Classic to what?

I love 80s cars... lots of revolutionary designs at the time. You don't see too many of them around any more either, so now they have that classic appearance.

I saw an early 80s 'K-car' style convertible (either 600 or LeBaron) in mint shape cruising in Nanaimo the other day... wearing 'Collector' plates. It made me feel very old, given I remember when those cars came out on the lots... lol...

So much love for the 80's cars for me. Growing up around these cars in that era i have lots of favorites, some are getting very hard to find.

1987 Audi 4000 quattro, had one in high school for about a week before the engine pitched a rod. Still would love to find a nice clean one.

1988 BMW M6, damn near impossible to find.
http://i42.tinypic.com/whfhxi.jpg

1988 Camaro Iroc convertible, owned one a few years ago with a 5.0l tbi, got beat by a girl in a Grand Am GT 3.4. Still want another only this time with a tuned port 350.

My Uncle bought one of these new in 88, it was one cool ass looking family sedan in my 10yr old eyes!

1988 Mazda 323 GTX- AWD turbo. Super rare.

Wow, you guys have no idea how lucky you are with all the great cars available now!

I was a teenager in the mid '80's and I can tell you that most cars, with a few exceptions (Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, some Japanese), were absolute garbage! Fox body mustangs were ugly as sin, archaic under the skin and painfully slow compared to a modern minivan! 200hp from a V8 muscle car... seriously! Don't get me started on the drum brakes! My Dad had a 1981 Chev Blazer with a 305 V8 that produced an astounding 105hp! What?

I'll admit that I really liked the lines of the IROC, but it was an absolute pig to drive--talk about cowl shake! Not Acceptable in any decade!

Have you ever sat in a mid-eighties Cadillac? Nothing says we don't give a shit about the customer more than a 1980's car interior (most were leftover designs from the 70's).

I still shake my head when I see a late '80s (even early 90s) Chrysler sedan, or a first gen FWD GM boat with 14" wire wheels and cheap chrome trim--they really needed to pull their collective heads out of their asses... quickly! I remember being quite disgusted with the complete lack of effort from the big car companies at the time.

You can point out that the Germans and the Japanese were making some decent cars back then, but 90% of the cars on Calgary streets were domestic. You would be lucky to see 2 , maybe 3 BMW's on your commute downtown--forget about Porsches, or any other semi-exotic. You really didn't see the huge variety we enjoy now. Although, Volvo an Mercedes were not uncommon.

I lived in Varsity Estates growing up, and in the early 80's there were 2 BMW's in the neighborhood, one Audi and NO Porsches. To this day, I can recall the exact driveways they were parked on... go count how many there are on Varsity Estates streets now! Ad to that, most people really didn't know what a BMW or an Audi was... just some strange German novelty cars!

The 80's weren't quite as bad as the 70's (especially the Detroit trash), since most were converting to fuel injection and electronic ignition, but there were very limited choices available compared to the present day.

Right now is a great time to be a car enthusiast guys... so don't long for something just cause it's old. The 80's was shit for a car guy!

QFT!!!

There really was a lot of garbage on the road. Even the cheap stuff put out today is miles ahead of the "premium" vehicles in the 70's & 80"s. I learned to drive on a 1975 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon. It had a 455 CID (7.4 L) motor that produced a massive .....190 HP! It did have 350 lbs of torque though which helped move its 5500 LBS of weight (never mind passengers & luggage). I think if someone put this thing on the road today there would be environmental protesters up in arms. When I drove it, gas consumption was usually in single digit territory.

This. i tried to say this earlier in the thread but was flamed and even accused of being 30 years old and living in my parents basement. I am not a fan of 80s vehicles, or the 80s in general. I did not like the big boxy car designs of the era, and as mentioned above the technology in those cars is so archaic relative to today's vehicles. Not to mention that it was a decade of arrogance, excess, and "family values," and that is clearly reflected in the car designs too.

The 80s have recently become "cool" among kids born in the late 80s or 90s, because they didn't really live it and thus think it's neat and retro - that's why i made my remark about that above.

One design that I like from the 80s though is this (forerunner of modern AWD and crossovers, which is neat IMO):

Although I agree that they were slower than hell, I have always liked the 79-86 Fox body Mustang coupes, those are my favorite cars of the 80s, no question. I owned two of them as a teenager, an 83 GLX 5.0L coupe and then an 80 4 cyl coupe that received a 5.0L swap. Easiest cars in the world to work on.

One car that holds a special place in my heart... my old 1981 Mercury Zephyr Z7 coupe... the one car I wish I never would have let go. Slow... painfully slow... even with the 5.0L... but it was the most unique ride I ever had. It was also ultra rare, given the fact it had a factory moonroof, A/C, power windows, console, etc... lots of features reserved for only the most premium of Zephyrs... lol...

I don't even have a picture of it, but it was sort of like this one:

I love the look of the 87-93 Mustangs and actually owned a 91 LX with a GT kit when I was 16. Eventually, I'd love to buy a '93 GT convertible like the one pictured below. Just because I love the look of them. Thinking back and driving other cars... it was probably the worst drive-able car and I'm comparing it to other cars of the same year. Bad blind spots, shitty seats, bad handling, turning radius was like a bus. But would want one for my collection.

Late 70s, but close enough. It was produced through the 80s.

Like I said, slower than all hell, but it was the coolest car I ever owned. It's the one I wish I didn't let slip away. They are virtually extinct now.

My Great Uncle had a Zephyr wagon, woodgrain sides and it had a 302 or other small V8. I remember driving it when i was about 14, it had the horn switch on the signal lever iirc. You're right about being rare, you NEVER see those cars anymore.

My Zephyr had the horn on the turn signal too... I believe that was pretty standard in most Ford/Mercury vehicles of the 1978-1982/3 vintage.

My parents had a 1975 Ford Gran Torino woody wagon when I was really young. That thing was like a cruise ship inside! Had a 460 V8 (7.5L), 8-track tape deck, fake brown leather and a double jump seat in the back that folded into the floor! It was great for long trips!

This. i tried to say this earlier in the thread but was flamed and even accused of being 30 years old and living in my parents basement.

I don't like most cars from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and I likely won't like most of them from the 10s. That's because most cars are boring and unexceptional. However, every decade has had its share of great cars that stood above the rest for whatever reason be it styling, technology, performance, outlandishness, whatever. The point of threads like this is to showcase the exceptional, not bitch about how cars now are technologically superior (duh?), or how most cars of the time were stylistically challenged, or how the only reason to like 80s cars is because they're "retro."

The great cars of the 80s shaped the great cars of the 90s. Audi, Porsche, Mercedes all started selling their cars with AWD systems in the 80s. Porsche and Ferrari began using carbon kevlar in the 959/F40. Sequential turbocharging as used on the mk4 supra and FD3S? First seen on a street car in the 80s. 1980s also saw the mass adoption of ABS and EFI. In short, the cars we enjoy today wouldn't have been possible without the greats of the 80s. That's looking at it from a technological standpoint, I don't feel like writing another paragraph about influential styling or incredible motorsports from the 80s.

However, you have time and time again demonstrated a startling inability to grasp concepts and ideas that are apparent to average human beings, so I will lay this out in point form for you.

- most cars from all decades suck, even now
- there were exceptional cars in the 80s
- this thread was made with the intent of sharing the high points of what many people view as a dull decade in automotive history
- NOBODY cares if you didn't like cars from the 80s

   Couldn't have said it better myself. I love 80's cars because they are the crossover between cars you drive and cars that drive you. The end of the carburetor meant the end of the average guy working on his own car and took a lot of the personal care that vehicles needed away.

Myself its Toyotas from the 80's, back when their trucks were a step above and their cars were still RWD, I love my corollas and cant think of any newer cars that are as desirable to me.

Nice! I very briefly owned an '84 Shelby Charger a number of years ago, though it had the other paint scheme... was silver with blue stripe & accents.

Sadly, it was only equipped with the high output 2.2L as the turbo engine wasn't added until the 1985 model year, so definitely not a quick car!

The engine ran like a top. The 5-speed was the typical bulky & clunky gearbox that equipped basically all of the Chrysler vehicles at the time... unrefined slushbox!

Mine was like this one:

I'm still impressed with my 87' Jaguar. The thing still looks good, and came with all the creature comforts that cars still come with today! Everything was powered in that car. Even when you lock to doors, it will roll up the windows and close the sunroof for you! I totally wish i had that on my car from 2009! Sorry... got a bit excited there.

It's a legend all right. Legendary for keeping mechanics busy. If if wasn't for the engine's hunger for head gaskets I would have had much more fonder memories of my old 1985 Daytona Turbo Z. It was a fun car when it was running.

the mopar performance head gasket solved any issues with it, i know guys who REUSED the things 9 or 10 times with 25+psi from a holset turbo w/o blowing it.

great motors, not so great designed head though, 8v non cross flow for the lose

Love the 82-92 Fbody's and 87-93 Fox Body's.

80's cars have one huge advantage, weight. In a thirdgens case, combine that with a modern powerplant...LSx and a T56 and you have a great car.
