And they put hot wet towels behind the food to show it is hot and fresh...
Cereal commercials usually use a slightly thinned white paint instead of milk....ever notice how thick it seems when they pour it on the cereal?

Sometimes the meat you see is actually frozen, so when you see the "steam" coming out of it, it's not because it's hot, but because it's really cold. Also, fruits like apples and strawberries are often colored using lipstick to give it that healthy red look to them.

I'm the marketing manager for a restaurant chain and I have had to do many food shoots in the past. In Canada you MUST by law have real food represented in your photo shoot, you can't have a fake turkey or fake hamburger bun or false anything.
However, we do doctor items to make them look better or hold up better under the lights. For example we will spritz tomatoes with baby lotion to give it a fresh look or we only just brown a burger so it will hold it's shape and colour better.
There are all kinds of tricks to the trade but two things are for sure and that's all of the food must be real and it must be your own product.

what does lumbar or wood do with VW ??
haha
its because of a "Lumber Jetta" that made an appearance on the net a few years ago :)
You'de have to frequent VW car forums to know the true humor of it all.

FYI the original lumber Jetta above is real, according to almost everyone (yah it's even on snopes).
And not to turn this thread into another lumber thread, but this one is in my top 5.

Yah, the reason it's looks so loaded is cause there's also 500+ pounds of concrete in the back seat. The guy was going to drive cross country with it too.
