Fuck....coming home from Vernon and they've closed the hiway between here and Golden. Already toured the whole town. Had lunch....NOW what?

Got stuck for an hour right after Revelstoke last night due to an accident, but it wasn't closed. Why is it now? Doesn't have anything to do with that derailment does it? (Which, apparently, the cops don't like you stopping for to take pictures....)

Edit: Avalanche Control. Moderate confidence it will open up at 4:00.

Still stuck on the side of the fucking road here. 3 lanes thick, hundreds of vehicles long. Motherfuck.....

Decided not to chance it. Road opened at 4:30. Took over an hour to go 10 miles with about 5,000 cars and semis bumper to bumper. Fog rolling in, roads covered in snow, everyone just picking their own lane, sometimes 3 vehicles wide.
Turned around and went back into town. Every room in Revelstoke taken except for the high-end Nelson Lodge at the ski hill. Fuck me, nice...but another $400 racked onto the trip (room plus food).
At least we got to watch Canada and now the Canuck/Sharks game.
FML. What a Christmas.

I drove home through that last night.

We were doing 50kph all the way to Golden from Rev. Took about 2 hours.

After Golden, and right uptil Canmore, it was snowing like crazy.

Expect more of the same today (avalanche control, crashes, slow drivers on summer tires in the mountains).

Passing lanes dont exist now there because

a) the signs are covered in snow
b) drivers drive down the middle of the passing lanes
c) oncoming traffic doesent stick to the right (was head-head with a semi last night at one point)

^^ yuck. Felt I made the right decision even though it's cost me, now, over $500. Had a great sleep. Enjoyed two good hockey games And room service. Nelson Lodge is a fantastic hotel, btw!!
We Left Revy around 9:30 this morning. Intermittent 2 hour closures but managed to miss them all. No traffic to speak of. Hit one 5 Km straight stretch of a totally bare road, 3 lanes and was casually doing 120+ and sure as shit the only vehicle in view was an suv coming the opposite direction....with funny looking red and blue lights flashing in the grill. Fuck me!!! Said I was 6 km/h away from a mandatory 7 day vehicle impound. But he dropped the ticket from $195 to a standard speeding fine of $138.
God.....still not home yet. Passing Banff as I type. Hopefully the tranny doesn't drop out on the highway. This trip has been the trip from hell. Stopped for a visit in Vernon overnight, only to leave the little cooler plugged in the car. Battery went dead. Electric locks wouldn't work and my key is too worn down to mechanically open them. Another $70 for the tow truck guy.

Can't wait to get home.

Wow. I'm so glad I went up Hwy 5 to Jasper directly from Kelowna now.

In other news, the Jasper Park Lodge. Two thumbs down. Totally not work $300/night.

just seems a little excessive doesn't it? especially in the winter. Whether you agree with speeding or not, simple physics state the chances of your family surviving a crash decrease exponentially with speed. Even with just my gf in the car i am more conscious of speed. But to each his own I guess, just a simple observation, I have no right to tell you what you should deem safe for your family.

:dunno: Depends on a myriad of circumstances doesn't it?

120 on icy roads, with traffic all around, coming to a bend, with possible side road entrances...seems like imminent suicide.

3 Lanes of roadway, with a 6' divider between them, no traffic in site, with about a 3 km straight stretch, plus 6 degrees outside with no snow, just wet pavement...I was quite comfortable with that speed.

Left lane on Deerfoot with rush hour traffic does over 120, with tailgaters in front and behind you.

But you can come to your own conclusions of what the circumstances were, IDGAF.
30+ years of driving over 50,000 km's per year, I'm quite confident in my own ability to assess the situation of what's safe for my family. One speeding ticket in the last ten years.

I don't disagree with the ticket itself, never argued with the cop whatsoever. Told him I knew the limit inside a national park is 90, I just wanted to make some time on the straight stretches. He said "yeah I understand". He obviously must have felt I wasn't a total "disaster waiting to happen" otherwise he wouldn't have dropped it to the minimum ticket.

no I wasn't discussing the chances of you getting in an accident, I was merely stating you are decreasing everyone in your vehicle's chance of survival in the event that a disaster does happen. You can't argue with that, its just merely simple physics which doesn't have anything to do with circumstance.

For arguments sake and ignoring the fact that it has been shown complacency actually increases the chance of a collision, if we are to say you are equally likely to get in an accident at 90km/hr and at 120km/hr if my math is correct the destructive force is going to be almost 2x worse at 120km/hr than at 90km/hr. Therefore almost cutting your passengers' chances of survival in half. Just a little food for thought.

But regardless, good to hear you made it home safe!

you know what would increase your chances of survival to 100%? staying at home... but what fun is that

Yes you were. Hence bringing up the point about who is in my vehicle.
The physics of the damage of a crash increase exponentially with speed...is a moot point, as a person who crashes doing the speed limit of 110 will be much worse, and with much less chance of survival than one by someone doing the speed limit of 50 kmh.
Your bringing in the point of what is "excessive" and who is with me is directly related to my decision of what's safe or not within the current circumstances.

Bringing in the statistics of physics in a crash is a completely different topic.

no actually bringing up the people in the vehicle has absolutely nothing to do with the chances of you getting in an accident, merely I was pointing out you are greatly decreasing your loved one's chances of surviving. I get that the speed limit doesn't = safe which is why its a maximum not a target. I duno just from my point of view not only would it be extremely difficult to go on living if I were to have killed someone while I was driving, it would be 10x worse knowing I didn't even listen to simple recommendations given to me.

On a side note, as I learned in my recent driver training, peak "black ice" production occurs between -4 to 4 degrees Celsius. Given that it was apparently 6 degrees out and the possibility of cooler shadowed zones or zones of cooler air masses funneling down mountain valleys to the road in different areas, AND a wet road, chances are you were sitting damn near close or actually in the zone of maximum black ice production.

Thanks max! I will stay safe! In all fairness, I agree in acceptable risk, and not taking unnecessary risk when there is no point. By increasing your speed to 120 from 90 for 3kms stretches, (again if my quick math is correct) you will shave off 30 seconds per 3km section (not including acceleration time- ie: assuming you can instantly accel to 120). Meaning if you were to encounter 20 3km sections to do 120km/hr on you would make up a measly 10minutes on your trip....

See how the numbers begin to make excessive speeding seem well, simply put, stupid?

edit: and to address the excessive comment, I was simply basing it off numbers. exceeding the posted speed limit by 30% no matter what you subjectively consider is safe, is pretty damn excessive.

What I don't get is if you go over my posts, almost all of what I have stated are facts (other than maybe considering driving 30% over the speed limit is excessive). Why do people find it so damn hard to hear facts? I find it kind of funny how everything in our world is governed (or explained) by laws of physics, chemistry etc yet so many people believe the can live outside these laws

I am well aware of physics, especially of cars, since I studied them in depth in university. This isn't a thread about that, though, and your uninvited lecture of vague concepts and half truths really has no place in the thread, either.

J-hop, here's the facts. you don't think he should have been going that fast, and if the same situation were presented to you, you'd make a different assessment of the risk and drive slower.

Another fact is that this isn't a thread about "why do people speed" or "what is excessive speed" and if you'd like to share your opinion on those topics, you should start a thread with that purpose.

actually I graduated quite sometime ago, i believe I was even on beyond when it started!! just under different user names.

I apologize for ruining the thread, I simply made a comment regarding what the OP had done addressing the physics behind it and the OP came back essentially saying I didn't have a point as physics is 'moot' because of driver experience conditions etc. At no point did I say he was more likely to get in an accident I merely stated that given equal likeliness of a collision he was decreasing the chance of survival of his loved ones. Simple as that.

As much as it is my fault for trying several times to get my point across IMO it is also on the other person to be able to take criticism. I think there needs to be a bit of give an take on beyond. I kind of get frustrated because all you hear is fuck CPS, fuck the law I know better, fuck safety, fuck anything that puts a restriction on me. Beyond in the beginning was actually a pretty good site. With tech talk, less banter, more respect for each other and for the law. It has been pretty crappy to see how the mentality has shifted. I don't know if overall Beyond is worse now than it was when I first joined, but maybe I don't fit in with the new mentality.

My biggest fault is when people display their indiscretions publicly (like posting it up on beyond) I feel a need to comment and try to break them down and take my view on it. Which is something I definitely have to work on. New Year's Resolution??

My first went out the window because I rarely used it to post and forgot/ lost the password for both the beyond account and the email and I can't remember if there is a secret question on beyond but my secret question answers are never words, they are always a combination of letters/numbers that I write down and the proceed to lose that sheet of paper haha so I figured it would just be faster to make a new account. Second was given to another member because they got banned for cross-posting (they were new to forums at the time) and I didn't really post so I didn't care and this is my 3rd and final.

90 kph? Design is 70 mph for most highways ... (Canada uses American-based design standards) ... something I studied in civil engineering school - so you're right Nick!

And, the above is one of the reasons I avoid going to BC ... the "speed" limit drives me nuts.
