In regards to gasoline sold here in Alberta, are all the premium 91 grades ethanol free, or is it station dependent on whether that is mixed with ethanol? Im guessing that the 87 grades always contain 10% ethanol due to government laws.

Havent really payed much attention to this until picking up my 2.0T Genesis Coupe which is my first turbo car. Been filling up with regular and it runs fine, just wondering if premium 91 would be worth it (engine is rated for 87, but adjusts timing for 91). Seems that most new cars are rated for up to 10% ethanol, but over the long term...is it really safe?

Why did you buy a Genesis?

You seem like you'd be more at home in a Camry.

You bought a performance car but are unwilling to spend an extra 10 dollars a month to get PERFORMANCE out of it.

I bet it's slower than dogshit on 87 with all the timing and boost backed off.

You might wanna check out Walmart, I heard they have tampons on sale during boxing week. Might help with your pms.

The car makes 200 hp on 87 but the ecu can also tune itself for 91... youll get about 10 hp more. Hardly a noticeable difference.

Anyways, was hoping on discussing ethanol in gas...not my car.

Don't see that very often, but I suppose it makes sense as you are only pushing 200hp out of a 2.0 engine... lots of NA engines do that.

I don't think ethanol is going to hurt it much

All the new Hyundai turbo engines run on regular, so do some GM and Ford boosted motors now too. It is going to become the norm quickly where not many run of the mill cars will need premium. As it should be.

As far as ehtanol goes I thought all gas could have up to 10%??

Government mandate that all fuel sold has to average 5%. So the easiest way for the companies to do this, and still appease the public who doesn't want ethanol in their gas, is to put up to 10% in Regular, and 0% in Premium.

That being said, they could change their mind at any time and just start putting 5% in both, and we would never know.

DI negates the need for Premium.

Higher compression is supposed to be bringing not only more power, but more complete combustion which translates into better fuel efficiency.

No.

I remember it was a big "bragging" point by Hyundai when the 2.0t came out that it was designed to run on 87 (or higher).

Google Hyundai Theta engine, it's rated at 210hp on 87 and 223hp on 93. The 13hp gain from 87 to 93 is probably not noticeable on the seat of your pants-o-meter so I doubt the OP is missing out on much.

OP I could be wrong but I believe all gas stations must display an ethanol content sticker if they are blends, almost all stations I've been to have ethanol in at least the regular gas. Few have ethanol in the premium as far as I know.

Running premium is the cheapest 13 horsepower you will ever make on that car.

Should have gotten a Camry...
