View Full Version : Luxury or speed for a DD?

Which one is more important than the other to you?
You can have both but usually at a high cost.

so does everyone eventually go for more luxury as they get older?

Most luxury cars aren't that slow to begin with but I'd choose luxury any day. I spend way too much time in my car on a daily basis to not be comfortable. I'm sure most people 25 and up will agree.

True good alternative, your URS4 looks like a perfect mix, but how is maintanence on those older high end cars? Do they break down often?

Get an AWD, high-end Subaru.

Slightly luxurious with good acceleration and handling for all weather conditions (provided you have the right tires).

Maintenance is typically a high cost of owning a high end vehicle, esp the Audi/BMW variety.

Im 22 and I DD my STI year round which has a true 350awhp, its not exactly luxury but its pretty comfortable. Drove to LA and back up the PCH last month and it wasnt bad at all except for the noise. I dont mind it at all however i am sure once i get a couple years older I will start to lean towards a luxury car.

UrS4 is really the perfect mix. The problem is finding one with low k/in good shape.

Maintenance is relatively simple and inexpensive on UrS4's/most older I5 Audis.

Get a fairly fast nice luxury car. I used to have sports cars as DD's my whole life. This is the first time I bought a super quiet very nice luxury car, and I cant say I miss the noisy, rough sports cars in the least for a year round car.

Luxury > speed. You can't go that fast in town anyways.

I rather have 200hp 911 over a 500hp subaru

It really just depends where your preferences lie. I drove a Maxima for a couple years as a DD and absolutely loved the ride, comfort, and power...in fact, that might be a good compromise. I now have a Legacy GT with upgrades...it's definitely more speed than luxury. For now I'm happy with the Legacy, but everytime I think of those big comfy maxima leather seats and all the room...I find myself wishing the Subie was more comfortable.

It's not about going fast, it's about accelerating fast. Tons of opportunity to do that around town.

Both are a must have for me, but I would definately go power first.

As has been said - not hard to get both... you just need to get something a bit older if there are budget concerns.

As has also been said - the S4 is a create blending of both. Plus with the Quattro it is excellent in the winter with the right tires. B5 S4's can be had for under 10g these days. For even cheaper you can get an A6 2.7 or 4.2. I absolutely loved the interior of my 4.2.

I think luxury and speed are entirely subjective. Fast to me is probably a joke to Rage_2.

You looking to set some land-speed records, or just be able to merge onto deerfoot quickly and safely? Like others have mentioned, acceleration is more important that top speed... at least for city driving. So find something torquey.

Are you looking to be able to have your ass massaged on the way to work in your alcantara seats, or just have something that will get you where you're going in a comfortable manner?

Is budget a factor? What about drivetrain? 4 doors?

Check out a Mazdaspeed 6 if you wanted decent acceleration and appointments at a good price.

Well realistically, power wise I mean something with at least 350hp.
And by luxury I mean really high end with stuff like heated and power seats in the front and back and all those really nice options.
S4, M3, C63, those cars have a good mix of both but at high costs.

If you really prefer Luxury you would go for something like an A7, S-class, 7 series though.

ah interesting, can you guys use all that power comfortably in the snow or do you just drive slow to get through those days?
How about uphill at lights? I've seen a few bimmers and infiniti's struggle at up hills even with winters sometimes.

DD-luxury IMO. i have a TL which is semi-luxury and its decently quick and i have the GT4 which is as far from luxury as it gets and is pretty damn quick, so i have both, but if you can get a newer AWD luxury vehicle it will be sub 300hp anyways and be exactly what you need.

For a daily driver, I would go luxury. Ususally some good power can be had going this route anyway.

If you drive rush hour, having speed get you nowhere. Luxury makes the 15km/h commute so much better.

+1. I believe speed is a factor less than 5% of the time. 95% of the time you are in traffic, or @speed limit so go for luxury.

I bought my awd Charger r/t as it was the best of both worlds in my budget.

0-60 5 second range. 1/4 in 13's

pretty luxurious imo (8.4" touch screen/ nav / back up camera, nappa leather, hid, htd and cooled cup holders, usb/aux/sd inputs, htd. rear seats etc.)
http://image.automobilemag.com/f/33107974+w750+st0/2011-dodge-charger-rallye-plus-dash.jpg

It has a huge trunk, and I hate trunks as hatch's are so much more practical. This is only my second car with trunk, had 5 with hatch's.
http://0.tqn.com/d/cars/1/0/b/W/2/ag_11chargerrt_trunk.JPG

Awd automatically engages under proper conditons (temp, rain, t/c disabled). My favorite part is I can totally diable awd and still do nice fat burnouts within 10 seconds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnYAVrX8UV4

And my mileage is pretty good, below in sig

While it doesn't handle like my sti did, it beats driving an suv around corners and is damn comfy after a day at work.

I dont know how well this is going to go over as its kind of an odd suggestion.
I ended up picking up a '07 Saturn Aura XR as a DD since my old DD shit the bed in the worst way, and for the $10k it cost me its one helluva nice car.
Still quick enough (0-60 in 5.5 with a 14.5 second 1/4 mile) yet it gets decent fuel economy on the highway (30-32mpg)

the early XR's have the 250hp/250tq 3.6 V6 from the Cadillac CTS's & the G6 GTP's. Its an auto but you can put it into manual and use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel when you want a more spirited driving experience.

Its a very comfy, practical car. Heated seats, very quiet, super nice driving and still handles decently. No sports car obviously, but with some high performance all seasons I can rip around clover leafs at pretty nutty speeds. *JUST ABOUT* as fast as I could these older Jap Coupe's I used to drive with heavily modded suspension.

For a practical 4 door DD, Id recommend that in a heart beat to anybody. So far put 20k kms on it since Oct of 2010, and I still just love it to bits.

They're a lot more affordable than people think... At least for a newer used model. I picked up my B7 S4, which has a good combination of both, for less than $20k. A number of them can be had for the low $20s and even less in the States too. So my vote goes for BOTH as a DD!

:dunno: I never claimed my S4 was a luxury car, so I hope you're not directing that at me. I merely said that mine has a good combination of both speed and luxury. Honestly, my EG Civic is still faster on the 1/4 than the S4 is, but even then I don't consider it to be in the "speed" category.

Luxury......

the exhaust on my current DD st205 is starting to get annoying. That said it still has it's place, just not cruising at the speed limit down the highway while trying to talk to the gf.

Ideal DD for me right now would be an e39 m5. Best of both worlds.

My last one was in my family since new, finally at 340,000 kms I decided it was time to move on. Great car, it never once broke down the whole time, and we shit beat it relentlessly. This one has been great, as is every claim I've ever read about it. :dunno:

The first years of Saturn (pre-95) were abysmal, but from 97 on they've been really good. The last years before GM axed them they were very high.

For all the newer ones you'd be hard pressed to find an unhappy owner. I love my Aura XR to bits, its just a wicked car.

I'm in my early 30's now so I suppose I'm getting old. That being said for a daily driver that i'm going to cruise down the highway going 120km/h in and sit in traffic for hours I will take luxury over speed anyday.

Love the Infiniti G37x sedan. 328 hp gets you going pretty quick, and it's comfortable as hell. The 4 wheel drive system works as promised but it's RWD 99% of the time so it's fun all year round with the proper tires. Picked up a local 2009 with 35k Hyatt serviced km's for $23,000, so good bang for the buck too.

A family member drives a D3 A8 L 4.2 right now... the fact that they're all aluminum really contribute to the sporting nature of the vehicle.

It doesn't feel like an S4, but it's a hell of a lot better than a comparable limousine sedan. Plus it does 0 - 100 in 5.8s and cost a measly $15k.

You don't do much better than that for something with adaptable air suspension, a/c cooled and heated seats, nav, 16-way adj seats.
