View Full Version : Another 996 Turbo Thread

Well since I sold my Elise (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?s=&threadid=332196&perpage=20&highlight=&pagenumber=1), I ended up buying a Porsche. This is my first turbo 911 and so far I'm completely sold on it.

It's already faster than the Lotus was even after the supercharger install. I had a 12.7 @112mph for the Lotus (G-tech) and on my first try with the 996 I ran a 12.45 @ 116mph.

http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/9127/img6625j.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/img6625j.jpg/)

Upgrades are starting slow, but they probably won't stop until I sell the car. I picked up an exhaust even before I had the car. It's a 3" exhaust with no cats from 911tuning.com down in the states.

With the new exhaust on I got my time down to 12.3 @ 117mph, I know that 0.1 of a second could be due to conditions, but before I was running 12.4 to 12.6 consistently and now I'm running 12.3 to 12.4 consistently, I would wager I've gained about 20hp.

http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/3292/img6567f.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/851/img6567f.jpg/)

Here you can see the very light new exhaust beside the very heavy stock exhaust, installation was very easy:

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/2718/img1228jr.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/51/img1228jr.jpg/)

Some of you will think I'm half assing the suspension, well you'd be right, the stock suspension is plenty for anything I do, I am a straight line speed kind of guy so suspension won't get much attention. I'm just putting H&R sport springs on stock shocks, lowering it ~1":

http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/479/img1235iw.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/811/img1235iw.jpg/)

I've also ordered a Protomotive retune and the Durametric cable to apply it, with the exhaust it is advertised as adding 100hp and 100lb/ft of torque, these cars are insane:

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/6788/durmetrica.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/11/durmetrica.jpg/)

Next purchase will probably be lighter rims, brake rotors, seats and a fixed wing. These cars are fairly heavy so removing some weight will definitely help.

I did look into cars from the states and although there was better selection the prices did not justify it. I bought this one from a dealer in Montreal.

I really wanted red or white because I know so many people with black ones already, but all the white ones had interior colours I didn't like and there wasn't enough red ones to find the right one for me.

Yes, I still think about doing a Lotus 7 style car with a 4G63 engine.

For wings, ebay CF specials are great deals, and looks 10x better than the stock little winglet. If you want fixed, or something more extravagant, you'd want to get the whole rear trunklid replaced with a matching wing.

If you buy the whole trunk lid, I wonder if the entire thing is carbon fiber or if the wing is carbon and the trunk is something cheaper. I'd rather have full CF so that I don't have to pay to get half of it painted.

There was a white X50 with black/white interior a few months ago on 6so, it was perfect.

I only drove one for a few days but the steering wheel shifters are really slow and I didn't like using them, but in auto-mode it's pretty smart. It knew when I wanted to have fun and when I didn't. It would always take a little longer than I liked going from GRRLOL mode to AHHHH mode but that's expected.

It's not that the auto-mode is any faster, I think it's just that I'm used to using the gas pedal to change gears in an auto. I'd know to lift a little before I wanted an upshift so it all seemed natural, whereas flicking a thing on the wheel and then waiting felt awkward, especially compared to modern paddle-shifted transmissions. I'm sure I could get used to it.

I never use the shift buttons. Like Mibz says, just drive how u wanna drive, the transmission does all the work. It's a Mercedes 5 speed auto, so it felt exactly like my old SLK32 and E55.

My car is black on black. I agree about the grey. I had Ivory interior in my NSX with black seats, I didn't mind that but keeping the carpet clean wasn't easy.

From what I've found they range from $48,000 to $60,000 for a lower mileage car manual transmission car. There was one with 140,000km for sale in Edmonton this summer for $39,900.

Manual transmission, if I was driving it year round like Rage drives his I would have went with automatic.

Well I've sold my stock seats that I did not fit in very well and I am in the process of replacing them with something better.

http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/165/38191110151147562490183.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/860/38191110151147562490183.jpg/)

I weighed the stock seats, they were the comfort ones with memory and full electric at 56lbs for the drivers and about 53lbs for the passenger. The new seats should be at least half that weight.

I've also ordered a VIS Carbon Fiber hood through Revwerks but I am not 100% that I will keep it, I may just put it up for sale. I like the fact that it is half the weight but I'm worried about the looks and the fact that I don't want hood pins. Maybe with the carbon fiber GT2 wing it'll blend a bit better, who knows. BTW, Rhys has been awesome helping me get parts.

Here is one on a Boxster:

I had originally planned on doing the full decklid, but on one of the Porsche sites a guy used accurate scales to weight everything including the hydraulics on the stock 996TT versus the aftermarket GT2 wing assembly and there is only a 2lb difference so it just makes no sense unless you are doing it for cosmetic reasons. I'll PM you the link.

Edit: Also congrats on the car.

I've also ordered and installed an iPhone adapter, I wanted to keep the stock head unit but still be able to listen to music from my iPhone:

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/848/ipbkr3m.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/42/ipbkr3m.jpg/)

Installation wasn't too bad, I ordered the proper keys to remove the stereo and then it was just running the cable and plugging it in, it takes the place of the stock CD changer which I would never use anyways.

They had a set of real GT3 seats? I've looked and they just don't seem to be available unless you want to buy new and then they are $4500. Every once in a while a set comes up for sale but they sell within hours.

Buckets are fine for me since I will probably remove the rear seats.

The fact that I know four guys with black turbo 911's driving this winter makes it hard for me to have mine sit in my garage, then I get a rock in the window of my daily driver, or drive through some hard packed snow and I remember that my 911 needs to stay at home safe and sound, haha.

Exactly the way I think.

So I think I've found my rims, I've talked to some shops and what I was mainly looking for was light weight with looks being a very close second.

I haven't ordered these yet but I probably will. I had wanted more of a name brand wheel but I really like this one.

Forgestar CF10's in 19" size. The 19" x 8.5" weigh around 21lbs and the 19" x 11" is ~24lbs. My stock wheels are 18" x 8" at ~26lbs and 18" x 11" at ~31lbs, so it should be a good rotational weight drop.

They are much cheaper, $1600 for a set of 4. The Forgestar wheels seem to be fairly popular on the Porsche websites, usually they use the F14 style.

Rocks would be the least of your worries, I'd be more worried about Calgary drivers + slick roads and slamming into the back of you.

You're probably more of a hazard to the guy stopped beside you in the next lane when the guy coming behind him is staring at your car and rear ends him.

I keep confusing 997's as the same car, which is why i see em everywhere. Like asian girls, they all look the same from behind, and you can only differentiate them when you see the headlights up front from the right angle.
