Um no. It is only in America when a unit of distance is spelled Meter.

As somebody that uses the word center on a daily basis, I had it beaten into me over the past few years by a coworker (with a british background, not french) to use centre

i like using Canadian spelling while creating drawings for our US offices

Your co-worker is wrong.

IF you are describing a location or origin, you use Center.
ie: I am standing in the center of the room.

IF you are describing a place of gathering then you use centre.
ie: I am standing in The Drop in Centre.

Everyone bastardizes the fuck out of that word though to the point where it doesn't even matter.

Meter in Canada means a measuring device.

Metre is a measure of distance.

Don't get me started on colour/color, flavour/flavor, you hear me local Calgary businesses?

I bet some (not here, no never) are not aware a US gallon is smaller than a Canadian (Imperial) gallon. Metric was to be our way worldwide, USA does not play nice in the world of measurements. They join the most backward countries in the world in this matter.

Spelling is an evolution, a slow one meaning we should know the proper spelling for our country even though we are less than a couple of hours from a USA border.

Glance over the list, we all get it wrong:
