Hi all, this project was started more than a year ago. I will be posting up some content to get up to date on where I'm currently standing, slowly :).

I am trying to build a 600whp, Evo 1. The early evos run the same engines as dsm's (mostly), and I found it may be fitting to have it here. If you're interested in following me further, you can follow me on twitter @eevotastic

Thanks!

Exhaust & Back
http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/81.jpg
The overly technical setup was built not to bottleneck the turbo. If a 59mm compressor gets maxed out on the .55 A/R DSM housing, it might be a wise idea to go for a bigger exhaust housing if the compressor size is increased by 3mm. Also, a 62mm turbo will have considerably slower spool than your average 16G. Add to that the size of the T3 setup, and you’ll be lucky to spool before midnight. In comes the divided T3, equal length, ceramic coated tubular manifold. It includes two 44mm gate ports, to hopefully gain some spooling RPM. Read more (http://evotastic.ca/2011/turbo-back)

Stay tuned :)

All I am going to say is I hope you have deep pockets and no girlfriend and you love to spend all your spare time in the garage ;)

Good luck.

Shortblock
http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/4.jpg
Nothing overlooked on the block. Some say the rods I chose are not big enough, but we shall see. The block was built by one of the best builders, with plenty 700hp builds under their belt. I wish I had pictures to show of the build process, but unfortunately I don’t. The block that I used is the original one, which is a ’93, 7bolt block.

you will need a better intake manifold than the stock one.

Agreed. Will do that eventually, but you gotta start somewhere!

Brake Setup
http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/3.jpg
Quick update to describe the current state of my brake setup. Perhaps down the line I will look into a full drag setup (ie Drag Man brakes), but for the time being I believe the current setup will work. It consists mostly of basic bolt-ons.

Rebuilt calipers by me
Braided stainless lines
DOT 5 fluid
Ceramic pads @ front
OE pads @ rear
Drilled & vented rotors

I bet these are the "ceramic upgrade" pads you buy at part source.

What do you plan to do with the transmission gearing? Evo1's are pretty quick out of the gate because of some really short gears. Which you need for rally like they were intended for. You won't trap 130-140mph with stock EVO gears, unless you rev to 10,000rpm haha.

I'll guess that they're the Hawk ceramic low dust/noise

An upgrade will come down the road depending on whether or not this will suffice. It will be plenty for low boost passes.

Transmission was built by Shepherd Transmissions. 1st gear was swapped for the Evo 3 1st, which is taller. All other gears are also Evo 3 but I believe the Evo 1 shares these gears with the Evo 3.

The transmission didn't keep Shepherd from trapping 180mph.

Redline will be 9k.

Transmission
http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/9.jpg

In deciding what will hold the power, I settled for the biggest and baddest manual trans available. With the exception of going with an automatic transmission or a dogbox, there is no stronger transmission. As ran on John Shepherd’s 1000whp + 7 second dragster, should take me far enough. They don’t say wether the trans grenaded itself right after that pass or shortly after, but let’s hope it doesn’t ever autodestruct. Chose to go with a 4 spider center differential over a welded diff for the sake of city driving. Shepherd rates the 4 spider to around 600whp, which is right on my goal. We’ll see when I get there wether I regret this. Also chose all the fancy options. Evo 3 1st gear & input shaft, which is a taller gear. Evo 3 fifth gear, which is also taller. May assist in not bursting my eardrums on the highway. REM ISF (whatever that does…).

The Stage 4 is our best trans without going to our dog box. We exclusively ran this trans in our 8 second Talon. This trans comes standard with a locked center diff so it is more tailored for those weekend warriors but a 4 spider can be added for daily drivers. With a properly working clutch this trans will shift at 10,000 rpms with ease. This upgrade replaces all of the 1-4 internals and shafts and has a custom ratio 3-4 to keep the rpms up between shifts and through the traps. For those wanting to run the stage 4 and retain drivability we can substitute a 4 spider for an additional charge.

And the engine was built by someone else.

I love seeing the builds of 100's of photos because they are doing it themselves.

Not hating - looks like a nice car - but, like I said, seeing revs talon and other builds is more up my street. The satisfaction of doing it yourself, getting dirty, trial and error....

It's much better to get an engine shop to build the motor and here is why

-a reputable shop knows what they are doing and use proven methods to build

-they do it day in and day out

-they have the machinery and fine measuring instruments at their disposal. They can clearance the Rods and what not and assemble at the same time

The list goes on

I can build an engine. Will I do it for myself ? Yes. For a customer...no. I would rather a professional do the short block and I assemble from there. Too much liability the other way.

Sometimes it's more economical not to mention safer to get people
Who specialize in that specific area. Trannys are no different. Let
The plumber plumb, let the welder weld...etc.

Reasons I didn't build it myself are mentioned above. Lack of time is added to that.

I don't pretend I know how to build a reliable 600whp shortblock & that is most likely why it will last.

Maybe you expect me to cast the rods from my own molds?

With the exception of welding the cage that will eventually go in, building the block & trans, I am doing everything else.

Plenty diy'ers online have done it & plenty have failed. If you don't have the right equipment and the right knowledge (ie crankshaft balancing, rotating assembly balancing, bearing clearance & ring clearances), you are asking for trouble.

Initially wanted to go for a 2.4, had gotten a great shape 7bolt crank from a local, from a mitsu expo. Turned out I changed my mind for the highest revving 2.0L. 2.4 would have worked well with the rev limitations of ECMLink v3 Lite, but didn't wanna bother w/ any machine work.

In doing the wire tuck, notice you can hide the hood latch cable by routing it along the side and past the fusebox cable hole, to the front and under the top beam if you drill a small hole to route it like so. Some of the outside pics include this mod, you can see it is well hidden under & you can reuse the OEM clips, just flip em backwards.

Poly mounts for the side, made a template to drill some holes in them, hoping to reduce some of the vibration created by them. Started but not finised, have yet to buy a drill bit that size. Actual metal mounts getting a shot of black.

What will hopefully bring me to 600whp. According to BEP, the 259 billet comp wheel CAN make 600whp on a T3 exh housing. What I have is a cast 362 comp wheel and hopefully it will reach it. Otherwise, I will either switch the S262 for a S362, or attempt to reach my goals w/ the newer BatMoWheel billet comp wheels.

Still need to install the engine back in to complete the wiring harness. I want a single harness that goes from the inside of the car on 1 side, and into the engine bay, w/ a few connectors @ firewall level so it can easily be removed and re-intalled for pulling the engine.

Update.

Local confirmed the highest HP local car w/ K1 rods (750whp) is actually with the lightweight version, which is in turn not as strong as the ones I have. I asked about the rod bolts, and that very build runs the ARP 2000 bolts. Not worried the slightest bit.

Finished painting the mounts and pressing the poly inserts in.

What I discovered on the clutch master. This could be related to my sticky clutch. There has been speculation regarding this: bubbles in the lines, flexing of the firewall, badly functioning slave.

It's apparent that the end of the master fork could have gotten stuck where the metal skirt ends. I don't know where exactly the skirt lines up but it's obviously hitting something.

Finished separating the front engine harness to the rear. Couple spots left, hopefully I can get rid of some of the 12 wires that are still using the molex connectors in the pics. Well see. Wouldn't mind getting a 12pos Deutsh connector on top of this one. The molex junk is just not working for me.

Thanks! That's already begun. The high temp silver paint is much better quality & stays on strong, so far. The black paint is POS.

Big update coming. Who wants it?
Coolant solution has been figured out. Only thing missing is some hose ends and welding. The -20AN hoses are NOT flexible. You’ll notice in the picture that I have to work out the angles into the bungs, rather than have the hose bend. Don’t mind the tape, it’s to let the welder know exactly how I want the bungs. Water cooled tubos are sort of a no go at this point, mostly due to having removed the water pipe. Heater pipe was removed, tapped for 3/8 NPT and red loctited shut.No biggied to tap in a -4AN or whatever in there.
http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/radmount.jpg (http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/IMG-20120707-00344.jpg)
-20AN everything. The ID of the -20AN is actually smaller than most openings I could see. Regardless, things worked out fine. Brand new, custom sized, dual pass radiator came along. Fit nicely under the crash beam. On top of this, it has an oil cooler on the OFH side. -8AN bungs welded to the OFH, -8AN fittings on the cooler, good to go.
http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/rad.jpg (http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/rad.jpg)
Wiring is also mostly completed. All 3 harnesses were grouped together, saved upwards of 20lbs of wiring. Engine, chassis and body harnesses were all combined into one. Everything besides high beams, wiper motor and brake fluid level sensor have been wired in.

Early evo owners: I need to know how the wires in the picture are wired into the cavities & which corresponding relay goes along with it for this relay box. I had grouped them when I tore down the wiring, but my computer broke & I can’t find the pictures.

http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/IMG-20120707-00357.jpg (http://evotastic.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/IMG-20120707-00357.jpg)

Car will be started soon, hopefully, and broken in without a turbo. Reasoning behind this is that I am itching to run the car & get a head start on the break in. While I am missing some work and parts on the 3’’ piping for the IC, I am missing nothing to run NT besides a small exhaust piece that would connect between my 2G OEM manifold and my V Banded exhaust.
More fast evo (http://evotastic.ca/blog) soon, maybe even a running one!

evotastic.ca

Many of you, especially the evo owners, have asked how my intercooler will fit and how big I am running. 4’’ thick, almost 30 inches long, just under 14 inches high :). Suffice to say, it barely fits lol. I really want to be able to drive this car in the city without any overheating issues, so leaving the upper vent of the bumper free of any fmic core was important. Oh and, don’t mind the electrical tape, it’s just until I the brackets get welded. Wish I could weld. Enjoy the pics

There is a good chance that breaking in the motor under full power will yield better results. Assuming it has been properly heat cycled and oil changed.

I've decided to do as you said since posting my last update. My manifold has since come in & I am ready to bolt it all together!

Thanks to Joe @ Red Jack Racing, my amazing, divided T3 manifold has come in. Need to find some heat shielding for that AN hose so close to the turbine housing. Car is scheduled to be put back together on Monday & Tuesday, some final work by my loyal mechanic on Wednesday and finally, starting on Friday. If all goes well obviously :).

Great build!

Seeing all the wiring made me a bit dizzy....you're clearly very dedicated LOL. I would screw that up pretty badly even with labels

Thank you my friend! I ended up knowing most of wires by heart, all the labels I had wore off :)

Hi all, Unfortunately, the car did not run in 2012. Maybe too optimistic about getting it running with so little time on my hands. Despite that, I am still working on it, and have encountered an issue I need help with. There is no pulse from the injectors when hand turning the CAS. I want to be sure I have fuel & spark before cranking the engine over, which is why I am looking for this. Here are some of the details I have gathered so far: With key on engine off (KOEO), turning the cam angle sensor (CAS) by hand, yields no ticking from any of the injectors;
The computer (ECU) appears to be booting up fine when turning to key to the ON position, the check engine light (CEL) comes on for 5 seconds and disappears;
The starter relay appears to be functioning, it clicks when the key is move to the ON position;
The starer appears to be getting power, as it makes a series of audible clicks when the key is turned to the ON position;
With KOEO, voltage at both pins of the injector clips = battery voltage;
ABS warning light appears on the dash, this light used to be present when I had a short 2 years ago;
With KOEO, CAS is seeing appropriate voltage (white 5v, black small .88v, red 11.9v, black large 0.03v);
With KOEO, negative side of voltmeter (multimeter) on negative battery terminal, positive side of voltmeter on either pins of of the injector clips yields no continuity, this I beleive is as it should be;
With KOEO, I get no voltage on the harness side of the resistor pack, this I am not sure of.

As I mentioned in the previous post, I am experiencing a no spark no pulse condition. This issue stems from my recent wire-tuck, at least it is likely to stem from that. All system were functional prior to the wire tuck. So onto the wiring I started working. Dug up some wiring diagrams for which the 4pin cam angle sensor (CAS) was used (1G 93-94). Do some crosschecking between the 1G ECU pinouts and the early evo pinouts.

CAS connector is identified as B32 on the above diagram. Tracing each individual wires leads you to the following:
pin 1 is the CAM position signal wire
pin 2 is the CRANK position signal wire
pin 3 is the +12v wire
pin 4 is the ground

Luckily, there is some literature available that allows you to find an equivalent for the cam and crank signal wire. As such, the tracing of the wiring should be as follows for the early EVO:
http://i.imgur.com/xySHa.png
This sends me to pin 2, which is supposed to connect straight to ECU pin 69 of the early evo diagram. This wire is black, and was, unfortunately, teeing off between ECU pin 69 and a chassis ground. As such, the signal was never received by the ECU when cam angle sensor (CAS) was being turned by hand. Separate the wire from the ground and VOILA! Spark and injector pulse are present. Problem solved. Up next: getting my FMIC piping welded :)

Good news. The battery draining short circuit was the slight wire mishap mentioned in my previous post. This means my battery no longer drains. Onto some progress. I've installed the Hallman Boost Controller and the Erbified Motorsports coolant overflow. The compressor cover serves as the boost source for the HBC (Hallman Boost Controller). Both fittings, available from Hallman Boost Controllers, turn the usual barb fittings into neat, -4AN fittings. The right one is a 120° -4AN fitting I got directly from MAPerformance.

Don't think I will have room for a filter. Few layers of metal mesh on the turbo shall suffice.

The oil will flow to and from the OFH (oil filter housing) to the internal oil cooler housed in the right side radiator end tank. This hose is -8AN sized. I hope this allows me appropriate heat absorption and potentially even help me drive this on the street without overheating. Despite being tucked, the wiring harness is still a mess :) Before making it all pretty, and wrapped, gotta be sure there's no more hiccups! Zip ties everywhere LOL.

Quick question, can anyone help me identify what these are? Both were around the driver side fusebox.

10.8" brakes on 600wHP car :eek:

Nice attention to detail on this build, and not trying to get down on you, but some major stuff left out! Head work? Suspension, handling, tires? What CR are you running? You better have a built head if you want to run a 62mm turbo on a 2.0L, especially if your CR is <9.5.

EDIT: Found most of it on your site - good to see you have a built head! My 62mm turbo (on 10:1CR) doesn't (fully) spool until 5K RPM :D

Thanks brother! Hopefully mine spools under 5. I will try it with the .76 and .85 divided housings. If they don't spool fast enough, I will go with a smaller sized EFR. I like the 7670.

UPDATE
1. it runs great, sounds mean & nasty, but a few quirks
2. my OFH is leaking, did not know they were bsp fittings, tapped NPT fittings in them. they seemed pretty tight lol.
3. getting evo 9 ofh and welded fittings etc etc
4. -20an hose is too tight, going with nylon hose so I can work with softer hose and larger angles hopefully
5. wire harness is going great, heres some pics. black: signal, red: power, yellow: ground

Thank you! Yes, update below!

Car runs, idles nicely, low FP @ mid throttle. New fuel setup on the way. In the meantime, finishing up the wiring. Did the driver side door harness this morning, its the completed one in the pictures. Forgot to merge the two AMP connectors before heat shrinking the braided sleeving arghhh. Means there is 2 connectors to connect between the dash & driver door harness. OCD? Probably lol.

Stripping the harness some more....

Car now runs on a handful of fuses and relays. Weight savings? :)
