TAG Heuer announces the Mikrogirder 2000. Chrono module beats at an insane 7.2 million bph. No balance wheel, no hairspring! Not sure how it's regulating yet, more info from the TAG engineers today at SIHH.

Pics... the main second hand sweeps 20 times per second to accurately track time in 1/2000th of a sec intervals. Sick!!!

That's pretty awesome.

most watches are 8 beats a second.

It's twice as fast as this:

TAG says 1/1000th's was the physical limit of the hairspring/balance wheel regulation system which is in use in most mechanical watches, so they had to invent the girder regulation system to surpass that accuracy level.

While the specs are impressive, I'm completely missing the point of them going to all this trouble for something that seems completely useless to anyone.

Just bragging rights. Like how many cogs in your auto tranny.

That video is neat. Now the problem comes down to human reaction time ruining it ;)

The 2000 is like the Veyron. Excessive, but so cool.
