So at the end of day one, both InRich and I agree that the current plumber probably won't work on anymore of his projects. You'll see why in a bit....

The bathroom and steam shower

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5364.jpg

Okay...attack the steam shower first

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5363.jpg

Get the liner in...

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5365.jpg

Start the boarding..

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5366.jpg

Wait....those taps don't look very level

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5374.jpg

Have to take the board off. Then wait for the plumber to come down, take apart all his joints and re-do everything. Thought the guy was gonna have an aneurism the way his veins were bulging and his swearing and slamming of tools.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5369.jpg

The funniest was him trying to argue that they were level!!

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5368.jpg

So we didn't get as much done as I'd like on day 1. More pics tomorrow...

That's the thing with being in a finishing trade, people think they can do shoddy work and since the homeowner didn't notice then its ok. I was a painter for years and shitty tradespeople ruining the job before I even had a chance to touch it are one of the reasons I'm not anymore. Why wouldn't he just come back and make the taps level? Why argue it when its so easily proven with a level? People these days...

Isn't it poor practice to notch a 2x4 like that? I'm not sure for plumbing, but I don't know a single electrician that would do that for a wire pass though. Just drill a hole through the 2x4.

I think the rule of thumb is no more than 25% of the width in a bearing wall and no more than 40% in a non-bearing wall. That looks more like 60% though.

But I'm not a carpenter and don't even own a proper hammer anymore so I am probably wrong lol.

Hey C_Dave45 I'm assuming you are good at doing tile for flooring / around shower...I live a few doors down from InRich. Have tile for bathroom floor. Have the shit I need. Don't have skill or the time. ;-)

You could probably do it on a coffee break from InRich's place.

PM me if you feel like doing it. :dunno:

Nah, that stud isn't supporting anything. You could even take whole stud out and it would be fine. More or less its just for drywall and plumbing to attach to.

Well, day 2 went a little better. We crept in at 8:30 while InRich was deep in his beauty sleep. He was up at the "crack o' noon" though!

Finishing up the bench

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5379.jpg

Now we need to waterproof everything

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5380.jpg

finish up the ceiling and bench waterproofing...

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5382.jpg

Now we take some sand...some cement...

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5386.jpg

Add a little water....

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5389.jpg

Here's where I get to play in the sandbox

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5390.jpg

All nice and smooth

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5392.jpg

Look at that sharp edge on the inside

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5393.jpg

Set all the floor tile

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5394.jpg

Tomorrow we start tiling the steam shower

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5396.jpg

Next we lay some in-floor heating wiring

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5400.jpg

..and cover that with some "SLC" (self-leveling concrete)

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/InRich/IMG_5403.jpg

Tomorrow the beauty will start to take shape!!

I hope you don't routinely tile shower walls with studs on 24" centers. Tile and grout don't exactly flex very well. I'm sure you know that.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see where you're finding 24" centers there? Are you saying that shower is 6' wide? Even the board across the ceiling appears to run lengthwise which would suggest 4' to me.

It was just in response to him mentioning "not even needing the stud there". If the stud wasn't there (the one the plumber notched), his drywall would span to the next stud. I'm guessing they're 12" centers. 12" + 12" = 24" = 2ft.

If you want an idea of how much that wall would flex, go for a walk on your roof. Now imagine putting tiles on that flexing roof.

I see where you're going now but I still don't think that was what Dave meant. He was (I think) saying that notching it is immaterial to structural concerns (don't even need it) as the stud has no overall structural purpose beyond adding rigidity to the wall....it's not load bearing, it's still going to support the drywall and in turn, the tile application.

I can honestly say though, shingles are likely a better roofing solution than tile.... :poosie:

Good for you. Just make sure you don't touch the walls by accident.

I'm sure you also know that cement board can only have a maximum stud spacing of 16".

That particular tile it does. It's a polished porcelain "travertine" tile. Have to be careful though. Some tile will have tiny holes, veins, texture, etc and the cup will let loose on ya at the worst time. I've broken many a delicate cut doing that.

I want to start with this is not a criticism. This is clearly quality work. I am purely asking out of my own lack of knowledge and wanting to educate myself.

What goes between the sand / cement mix and the tile that was laid on the floor? Grout is not water proof if I'm not mistaken so would water not go down to the sand and cement (sitting in the rubber membrane) and always be wet? How does the mortar bond to the sand / cement mix is it not grainy and loose?

Cutting your holes, how did you make circular cuts? I’m guessing that with the polished porcelain you would get chipping with anything but a wet saw.

With the ceiling tiles why not start with them so the perimeter would support the wall tiles?

You are correct. Grout and the sand & cement are not waterproof. You would be amazed at how many contracters, DIY'ers and even so-called tile setters don't fully comprehend that.
The way a "traditional" shower works is, yes the water flows through all that and hits that rubber liner. Where the liner is attached to the drain assembly there are small "weeper" holes that allow the water to run down into the drain. But you are right, most the of the time that whole 2 inches of sand and cement are wet. That is why, even a pinhole in that liner (including any improperly placed screws/nails) will allow the water to seep into the woodwork or even the floor below.
The tile is cemented to that "dry pack" with a "slurry" of thinset and then beat into the drypack nice and solid.

As for doing the ceiling first..it would be next to impossible to have all your joints line up when starting from the floor, and hope to hit the joints in the ceiling. You'll see in the following pictures.

The green stuff IS a membrane. It's a liquid membrane that dries to a 100% waterproof rubber membrane.
I like it much better than Kerdi.
I get those spacers from Shamrock Flooring. They're called "Tavy" spacers.

Hey Dave. Question for you. Why don't you use Mastick for the walls and ceilings? I know that when I was a helper for a couple years we would used it for all wall stuff.

You dry pack is top notch! You also very skilled with the grinder.

Well aside from the fact that you can't use mastic inside a steam shower, you could *never* set large format tile like that with mastic. Some of those pieces are built up almost 1/2 inch. I used over three bags of thinset for those walls. Glue would never set up at that thickness.

Not much happened today. Finished all the setting. We'll grout everything up tomorrow, and then I'll wait until everything else is completed. Plumbing trim, carpets, finishing work. Then I'll come back and take some good shots of the whole basement.

Finished the ceiling outside the steam room area

Did you do a credit check or at least have part of the work paid for up front in cash? I would hate for you to have to place a lien on his already leveraged residency.

Excellent tile work David.

you know your a fucking clown when...
would it make you feel better if I told you I was already semi retired at 31 years old, a full 30 - 35 years sooner then you'll ever be? how's that feel?

Thanks for trying to ruin a great thread though.

edit... dave didn't collect any money upfront. there was no contract signed, and I paid him in full, with a check today.

Okay. Job is completely done and paid for.

But I'm going to be serious here for a bit. I've met quite a few "beyond'ers" through business and my poker games. Probably more than many of you. I've gotten to know most of them quite well. And every one has been a great person to get to know.
But I have to say....InRich has been the most inspiring person I've ever met. Sure he likes to respond to idiot posts (like the one above), kinda the same way I do. But if I had the actual "baller" status that this guy has I would be way less polite than he is.

99% of you could only HOPE to be as business savy, and self-motivated, and successful as he is. He doesn't even let on what his actual worth is, or how successful his business is.
So all you guys that think he's full of shit, and "HELOC" this and "Credit check" that...if you only knew. If you only knew.
I won't divulge what I know to anyone, but suffice to say, when I see these stupid comments about him..I will just quietly chuckle to myself.

Rich...it was a pleasure working for you. You've opened my eyes, and for the first time in a long time, I'm excited about the future. Looking forward to doing more business with you.

100% agreed. I've met Rich in real life as well. Straight up guy and seems like he has an insane work ethic. Rich, you really don't need to justify yourself to anyone here.

InRich, that's a nice shower you got there. Very nice. And to the other guys who said "Boo" to paying by cheque.. it just shows that they'll never have enough money to require using one. Nobody carries large amounts of cash on them in real life, that's just stupid.

Dont worry.. Once the thing is complete, I'm having Dave come back and take professional pictures of the whole thing. his camera's sick so I wont even attempt my own ppictures
