Cool.

I just eyeballed the pins against a ruler but I think this might be the right plug:
http://search.digikey.com/ca/en/products/CA-2197/CP-2197-ND/568587

It is 3.5mm outer for sure, but I can't tell the inner size with much certainty, the pin looks to be 0.9-1.0mm but the hole in the plug looks much closer to 1.3-1.4mm so I am thinking that is probably the right size. I'll check the polarity on the connector and power draw over lunch (as this lead only comes with 24awg wires).

Now I need to think about whether I need anything else from digikey to make ordering this connector worthwhile...

*EDIT*
Looks like the connector is center positive (as anybody would expect). I measured the power draw on mine, and it shows about 150-220mA during startup, and 320-340mA while running, I didn't let it run long enough to kick back into parking mode, but I don't see any reason the power draw would be higher than when running. Should be no problem having 24AWG leads, even over 10-15 feet, especially given that the stock power cord uses 28AWG conductors.

Hey Zero102,

I notices in your video, the aim is abit low (my 2cent).

I would aim up a little bit so that your dash are not capture in the video.

There is still some mucking about to do, but I've read on a number of other forums that discuss this camera that you should aim it extra low so that when the sky is bright you don't end up with a completely underexposed road infront of you. I aimed it really low on purpose, and I was going to experiment with how it performs when driving into the sun and such.

What do you mean theres no circuitry? Are there (+) and (-) wires? Thats all I need to hardwire it.
I havent cut the blackvue power cord open yet but I cut the wire for another dash cam and it had (+) and (-) wires.

I mean its just + and - wires, and a 3A Fuse in it.

No regulators or anything like that. (As expected, since the unit itself has them onboard)

This is what is inside the charger, just about nothing. Just wire it straight in, buy the right jack and add a fuse.

Any guesses on whether the digikey part I linked above would fit?

I am uploading another video to youtube right now... It is taking a long time because my home internet sucks. I'll edit this post with a link if/when it finishes.

I would recommend putting the camera up high enough that the tinted band on the windshield dims the sky, that should help with overexposure. I tried bumping up the brightness to help night recording but it seems to have really wrecked daytime recording so I turned it back down after looking at these recordings. Also, I bumped mine back down to 720p, looking at the image I am not convinced there is any benefit to using 1080p over 720p with my camera.

**EDIT**
Upload finally finished, here is the video

Mine does the same. It only ever worked the first time I used it. The only way the power stays on is if I put a ton of pressure on the connector cable where it goes into the camera. Something definitely wrong.

For people who are having troubles with their cameras powering off, is your camera on all the time? I wonder if it is heat related, they do get pretty warm when running...

kenny
03-22-2012, 11:11 AM
Thats one thing I noticed about the Blackvue when I did the comparison with the DOD-Tech camera. After driving around for 30 mins and pulling the two memory cards out of the cameras, the memory card in the Blackvue was scorching while the DOD-Tech card was barely warm.

Not a heat issue in my case either. The second day I went to use it and it didn't work right away. The test I had done the day before was for a 15 minute drive so there was not enough time for it to heat up at any point.

I think there's an issue with a loose connection somewhere within the camera. THis would be consistent with the powering on and off.

does parking mode eat up alot of the battery power?
Do you guys leave it on parking mode overnight?

03-24-2012, 10:20 PM
I didn't get a BlackVue, but as far as I know, the battery only has enough juice to save the current recording to the SD card in the event of a power loss.

The parking mode can only be used if the camera is hardwired to the car battery.

Sorry that's what I meant. If it consumes alot of power from the car battery while in parking mode.

Glad to hear that! Lucky it wasn't something serious, I'll file that away for the future in case mine starts acting up as well.

I measured the power draw in active mode and it was over 300mA, I didn't wait long enough to measure the power draw in parking mode but if I order up some connectors to hard wire these things I will check that too. Assuming the worst case, which is that it draws ~350mA in parking mode that means it consumes 1Ah from your battery about every 3 hours. Normal car batteries have approximately 70-90Ah of capacity before they are completely flat, so after depleting maybe 10-12Ah I would worry about being able to start your car in cold weather, so that works out to 30-36 hours of parking mode without charging your battery back to 100% (at LEAST a 30 minute drive, preferably 2 hours) before your car may not start on a cold day.... I don't know, that sounds a bit short to me.

I'll check the power draw in parking mode later (or somebody else can if they like) but I think I'll skip on wiring mine to constant power for now.

Or if you don't mind not having the GPS and speed overlay, the one in Cos' thread was only $60. I ended up buying that one cause I couldn't justify $220. It serves my purpose. :D

How are you running the power?

If you hard wire the cord it is possible to have the power and ground backwards.

I ran into that when I wired it into my dome light. Reversed them and it powered right up.

Anybody else suffering SD card failures on these samsung cards that shipped with the cameras?

The one in my van started telling me to check the SD card every 1-30 minutes of driving so finally I swapped the card and brought it inside for testing, after running a full format on it the card didn't even live through 1 pass of h2testw, it went through the full write phase then failed after 668MB read, showing over 14GB as bad:

Straight from the camera into the 12v power supply in my car. I tried the unit in my gf's car and it didn't work either, so I'm not worried about a cross-wired scenario.

For those who aren't suffering failures yet... I think the cards start failing on reads before they fail on writes. If anybody isn't already doing this you should yank the card at least once a week and check over a few videos and make sure it isn't just filling the card with garbage and that the card itself hasn't failed. It is just a general bit of good housekeeping but I figure it is worth mentioning. The SD card in my other camera may now be showing signs of failure so for me the failure rate is 100%.

For those who got their cameras from the first batch (of 30) do you also have Samsung microsd cards, or are yours different?

Squishy
04-12-2012, 12:53 PM
Hey guys, so even though I haven't updated much, all the cameras from the 30 and 10 order have been picked up, I'm *still* working on the 7 order because the sellers have been hard to reach lately, etc.

So. That being said, the seller wants $218 for the 7 order through paypal or $213 via bank transfer. This is the same seller I got the 30 batch from so I'm asking the people with the 7 order if you would be fine doing the cheaper method or not.

If not and you want PayPal, it'll just be another $5-$15 for customs + the extra few dollars.

Let me know,

Thanks

My SD card started giving errors about a week after getting the unit. I cleaned the contacts really well and it was fine for another 2 weeks before it started giving problems again.

Until I get around to getting another card, I've just got my camera unplugged so I don't hear the "Please check SD card" message over and over.

:(

Zero102
04-18-2012, 10:18 AM
If you want _REALLY_ annoying do this...
Remove the SD card, throw it in a computer, format it then use h2testw to test the card. After this forget to delete the files it creates, now install this card in your camera and wait...
It decides it is a blank card so it needs to copy its files over, but it runs out of room almost right away. For some reason it copies the settings file first, so this file gets only partially written.
The camera then checks the settings file on the card (AFTER it just copied it for some reason..) and decides that the settings have changed and copies this partial file over the perfectly good one it just had. Now it has no valid settings files and just complains over and over and over that the settings file has changed, then that the settings file is invalid. Pulling the power does NOT stop the messages, you have to wait a couple hours for the battery to die.

Also, cleaning the contacts does nothing. Did you verify the data on the card after this? I suspect not.
Basically these cards fail in stages, first they stop reading properly, then they stop writing properly. Sections of the card fail at a time, not the entire card at once, so depending on where it is actually writing on the card and whether it ever verifies its data you can go 1 minute or a few days until you get the failure message again. Pretty much once it comes up bring the card inside, format it, run h2test2 on it a couple times, it will probably show as completely dead by the time you finish this.

The app doesn't give real time streaming as the Blackvue doesn't have the hardware for that functionality.

... What? How do you get realtime video from it with the blackvue app? I have only seen that by using the video out cable... When I install it the app just bitches that neither my internal memory or sd card are properly formatted because I am running CM9 and apparently it doesn't like the sd card mounting location :(

Also, what is the video in cable for, can the camera do some kind of overlay as well? :D

No it can't for a couple reasons:
1) it is standard SD card sized
2) the normal one only supports jpg files and the pro version only adds raw support (super lame move by the way, files are files...), but they don't support video files or the extra gps/accelerometer data that is recorded by the blackvue

The cameras are fine, some appear to have been shipped with crappy SD cards but that was a $25 fix (or arguably, upgrade). Not a big deal to me considering what they can save.

Yesterday I had exactly the situation I was worried about (one of the reasons I bought my cameras) come up, some dumb bitch in an infiniti g35 rolled back to within a few inches of my van

http://youtu.be/vcY7HAooERk?t=1m8s

You can check earlier and see she really likes driving out of her lane and is generally careless, then right at the end of the video as she goes out of frame she runs over a curb making a right turn... absolutely no excuse for this sort of driving. Sorry guys but I cut the sound as it was seriously inappropriate to post, between my daughter throwing a fit in the back seat and this dumb broad trying to roll into me it was a little :nut:

If anyone wants some send me a PM and I can add them to my order.
I'm interested in a second mount and power cord... are your prices the same that Squishy quoted?

I have no idea what she quoted. I'm sure it's somewhere in this thread.

I'm ordering them from http://www.hids4u.co.uk/search.php?mode=search&page=1

The price will be whatever the cost/shipping/duty is divided by the number ordered.

I'm going to order 10 of each pending stock on hand.

Looks like the will be coming in at about $40 for the cord and mount.

Checking the site 10 of each gives a shipping charge of 50£ ($80) for 20 items, or about $4/item. The mounts are $11.20 (6.99£) and cords are $16.00 (9.99£) so with shipping I would expect mounts to be ~$15.20 and cords $20. I'm definitely in for 2 mounts (and 0 cords) at that price :)

I Dont mean to De-rail this thread, But i have a line on the ability to get these cameras for about 170US/PC.

Im currently investigating the seller at this point to make sure that they are genuine cameras and not knockoffs.

I may make a sample order of 2 or 3 cameras, would anyone be interested in pitching in for the sample? of course with the possible risk that they are knockoffs. im awaiting pictures and complete contents of the box aswell as the packaging to see if its the real deal.

feel free to PM me if interested in participating in the sample. or to request more info.

final price i got on the DR350 was 150/camera. but its NOT HD.

i just did some additional research and discovered the ones im inquiring about are the DR350, which is non-hd, its only 640x480,

when i discovered this i inquired about the 400D, which is the identical model squishy was able to get for 215.

i recieved a quote back and was quoted 235/pc including shipping.

price would drop 10$ with 20people, which would be bang on with squishys pricing. =) if i get enough interest via PM, i will create a thread with more Information.

UPS should have a package for me when I get home.

I'm assuming they are the mounts.

I think I bought 10 mounts and 6 cords.

I will be selling sets of mounts/cords first and then the remaining mounts.

I will not sell the mounts on their own until the cords are sold.

I have 4 cord/mounts sets spoken for already.

Package arrived today after paying the UPS tax.

I have 7 mounts and 3 cords available.

The mounts/cord sets will be $40 and a mount will be $20.

The first 3 mounts/cords will need to be sold first before I sell just the mounts.

I am tired of waiting and I am considering making my own order for mounts, is there anybody else out there still looking for cords or mounts? I'd be looking for pre-payment before I make the order but I will only charge the item cost + fair division of the shipping charges. So for example, if we can get 10 items ordered shipping would be $25 so mounts would be $11.50 for the mount + $2.50 shipping or $16.50 for a cord plus $2.50 shipping. Given that I have a full plate already and am not making any money on this the items would have to be picked up from me. I am located in Royal Oak but work downtown so I could meet at either place or anywhere in between. Is this something anybody else is interested in? I would be looking to order by next weekend and they quote 1-2 weeks for delivery.

If anyone is paying more than $5 for a cord or $18 for a mount you're getting ripped off.

Please post the source for your $5 cords and $18 mounts. The only remaining place I have seen these for sale is that hids site out of the UK and after shipping and conversion the prices I posted above are what they come out to.
