Release Date:
9 March 2012 (USA)

Wonder if there will be any place local that would play it; doubt it though :(

Opens March 9th, I would think Calgary will get a copy once the major cities in NA are finished with the run (late March I would bet):

If the movie is half as good as the food, it will be well worth seeing: http://www.alifewortheating.com/tokyo/sukiyabashi-jiro

I'm so fucking hungry now. When this hits TPB I'll be sitting down to watch this with an 80-peice platter to-go from Sakana grill.

I've been to this place before, costs roughly 350 USD per person and it's literally located in a subway. They only accept cash and if you don't have any they'll escort you to a ATM that's further down. Literally the best meal to have in Japan. The old man is really witty if you understand Japanese.

crying about how it probably doesn't even come close to what he makes and that you have to make it to this restaurant before he passes away? cause this will become a priority for me when i visit next year, hopefully.

the beginning music feels like i'm turning on my PS3

I wonder if he'll get mad if I mix wasabi with soy sauce then dunk a piece of sushi in there right in front of him like most people do here lol. Or ask for a california row.

I'm sure it tastes amazing but it looks like an ordinary piece of sushi. That'd be a traveler's nightmare just walking into a place next to the subway and the sushi tastes really good considering its a dive in the basement of some building and then comes the $300 tab.

soy sauce and wasabi, so you can eat it pretty much instantly.

In Japan the nigiri comes with wasabi already in it, so there's no need to add it. In the west, since so many people don't like wasabi, they put hardly any wasabi in the sushi, sometimes none at all.

I like how you don't see any of those fancy, over-the-top rolls they make here though, never been a fan of those.

true, not a fan of the the rolls.

Sushi should be simple

Watched it last night, it's a pretty good documentary.

A 20-course meal (that's all they serve) starts at 30,000yen depending on seasonal fish. Under his pace you'll finish in 15min. Booking is mandatory. One month in advance is minimum. The second restaurant in Roppongi opened by his younger son is cheaper. Which baller here is going to write the first review?

BlackRadon

400 dollars for best sushi in the world in a michelin stared restaurant and you only need to book a month in advance. Thats not to bad at all. I guess the only this is getting there. lol

Ill have to check some local listing and try and find it out here in van:drool:

I want to try it too, but I've read that foreigners are not welcome at the restaurant. Someday I'll visit this place, even if I'm not welcome :P

When you hear about this sort of thing, it is due to non Japanese people not understanding the process and prices and they get pissed off and do a runner or cause a scene. Also, the language issue is very taxing on the employees as you can imagine and disrupts the dining environment. I was always welcome wherever I went in Japan, point, grunt and they bring it to you. Just do not raise your voice when they do not understand English, they are not deaf, they are non English speakers. People think shouting somehow makes understanding easier.... good laugh watching this level of communication.

LOL how's that a spoiler.

Amazing movie though. Maybe I'm just a big documentary geek but it was one of the best movies I've seen in the last 12 months. Sushi in this movie looked so good it's like food porn.

I borrowed it from the library, well worth the watch. Top doc for sure. I came away with a new appreciation for sucking it up and plowing through work situations with zero complaints and maximum focus. Many masters in this film, we could all learn from their work ethic.

Watched it last night and it's pretty good! Felt like it was getting pretty repetitive by the end but overall it was kind of inspiring. And now I'm going out for sushi at lunch

thanks, jmaaa and flipstah.

this documentary is probably one of the best documentaries that i have seen to date. it's really inspiring how jiro strives for perfection in his work. i really wish they had shown more about jiro, though. i was interested in knowing more about him more than anything.

There's a 6GB torrent floating around. I got it from Piratebay and it was great with hard encoded subs.

Great watch though. Makes me want to go to Japan to try this out but $3-500 for 30 minutes per person makes me cringe. I do appreciate that's is no BS sushi at it's purest form. Tons of reviews complaining of a cold/detached ambience but no one ever rates the food negatively.

The movie must have done really well - I'm heading to Japan in November and tried getting my friend to go book us a spot. Waiting time ? 4 fucking years.

I got a reservation at his younger son's shop in Roppongi though.
