View Full Version : If you had to pick one place in Calgary to eat...what would it be?

No criteria, no price limits, no specific type of food...

If you had to pick one place in Calgary to eat on any given night which would it be?

For me I'd have to say I've always had a soft spot for Pulcinella down in Kensington.

Let's hear what everyone's fav spot is.

Could maybe open people's eyes to some new spots.

1600 Beir Haus...

Food isn't very pricey, awesome burgers, good selection of European beers, dance club atmosphere late night Fri/Sat. and most importantly, is stumbling distance from home, with Studio82 half way between, so I can stop for a refresher

There's tons of better restaurants, but this one is my current fav.

Really? Sakana IMO is one of the worst sushi places in the city. Inconsistent, and sometimes downright awful. I only go there in an emergency.

I had never really enjoy Pulcinella. As Neapolitan pizza goes, I’d have to say Famoso has been really good.

Sakana is not good for sure.. but i would'nt call it worst in town, theres many a scary sushi place everywhere, e.g. that place next to tubby dogs, that place across 36st from TnT supermarket.... they so bad i dont even know their names lol

If i have to pick 1 spot to eat for the rest of my life.... i'd prolly go for Zipeng

If you're concerned about price/value, it's not the restaurant for you. You're not going to Ruth's looking for quantity for the money, but quality. You're dropping at least $120-140/person on a good dinner there such as this:

1. Wyborowa
2. Ahi tuna
3. Calimari
4. US Filet Blue Rare
5. Sweet Potato Casserole
6. Creme Brulee

That's my perfect meal right there. Don't think I've ever had an off day. It's been consistent since day 1 for me.

If you want value, my parents love Reef and Beef in Rundle. You'll be shitting beef for 2 days eating there, at $40/person.

Not the worst food I've had in an upper scale Calgary restaurant, but pretty close. Tried it twice; I wouldn't make my dog suffer through the leftovers. If it was located anywhere else, I'm sure it would've been gone years ago.

Wasn't really concerned about price when I went there because we got 50% off....I am simply saying that the food was nowhere near the quality you were paying when comparing it to other restaurants. Everything at this place was mediocre at best for the type of place it is.

I agree completely with the creme brulee though, that is the only thing I would go back for that stood out.

Only reason I mentioned it was because I had lunch there with rage2, kenny and mibz. rage2 had a short, dark, curly hair (you can draw your own conclusion as to what it was) in his food. :barf:

IIRC it was kenny's suggestion to go there!

When you go to MBA or Gee Gong what are you supposed to order? I've been to both with some white friends and we never know what to get, so whatever we do end up getting all tastes the same (read: bland). I want some real Chinese food that a Chinese person would eat. What I've tried at both of those places would make me think that Chinese people just like eating paper.

You should get some asian friends. But even then that doesn't exactly solve your problems. Most of my asian friends are bananas. I think I balance them out with my uber asianess.

Depends on what kind of chinese food you're willing to eat. I don't exactly EAT asian as asian as I am. I speak/talk/walk/what not asian but I don't eat asian. Asians tend to eat stuff like pigs legs and chicken feet, or beef tripe and pigs' blood clots... Completely do not understand. So back to your question: Depends on what you're willing to eat you can get some pretty eclectic stuff, but even if you're not willing to go that far, I'm sure you're just ordering stuff with the wrong flavors.

Same boat friend. I am left leaving a Chinese meal thinking: "This cannot be what a billion people eat" and maybe they think the same thing of us after a Big Mac? I have had some success in a new method, I slowly walk into a crowded (needs to be nearly 100% Chinese people, more the better) place and order whatever I see looking good on another table. When in Rome....

I've tried no MSG and with MSG at my local Chinese takeout, both taste the same and the MSG just leaves me thirsty. Now I am off all Chinese take out until I can find a good place. My best friend in HS was fresh from Hong Kong, his family owned a HK food restaurant, never had food so good as what his mother brought home for us. So yes, make friends with a racial bias towards good food. Eh, relationships can be built on anything and food is a good start.
