Surprised no one has mentioned it yet. Still a ways to go yet, but good to see there's progress being made:

Nah, haven't been down since the Ride of a Lifetime day. Been busy with the baby and what not. Someone posted some pictures of it being ripped up, was a little sad for sure, but makes way for the new track to come together.

Remember going to races right from the start (oval side) and soon after, volunteering mostly on the oval side back in the 80's. Remember working at one enduro stock car race on the oval in which there were so many entries that they were lined up 3 abreast all around the track and it was a rolling start - that was one crazy event.

man I spent a lot of time up in those stands and only a few times actually racing... Really sad sight...

Crappy thing is I doubt a new track would be done until a 2-5 years.

Friday and Saturday nights will be stupid around Calgary... Hopefully you guys are smart enough not to race on the streets.

I just watched the last episode of Top Gear and Race City now looks absolutely perfect for head-to-head rallycross.

in reality could the city not give us some land ( even for a short time) , enough to set up 1/4 mile runs i mean we have clocks (well RC does/did)
how much would it really cost to pave 1/4mile? well say 1/2 mile ( down and back) i know people would volunteer with set up and what have you

am i out of line in saying this? like what other cost are there to be covered? what other issues? is land a big problem?

Just trying to get my head around it

^A fair amount; and not at all worth it. Then you also have track insurance to worry about too. All in all if people really want to race, we're not too far from the US border, or a few other tracks in western Canada. :dunno:

Its true that you dont really appreciate something until its taken away fully; but I cant see Calgary having the kind of scene that would warrant such measures as building a temp track somewhere.

I work with Rick Coutts, he is very happy with how things are progressing. Things are very close! :D

just something a bit wrong about tearing down a good facility when no suitable alternative is available. Sad sight to see, but at least there is movement for a new track.

talking to the owner up a stratotech last summer. they said 1km of road. leveled, prepped, packed and paved as about $7 million if i remember correctly. then add land, administration, insurance and operating costs. not exactly realistic for a temp track.

I like it, the winner keeps their air filter clean, loser cleans out their carb next weekend.

Just seeing those pictures makes me sad, and a bit sick. Why the hell do people have to have such a lack of respect, to go in there and tag it up. I understand that it will be torn down, but damn, let it be in peace until then.

From the blocks that are laid out in there, were they having issues with people breaking in and racing down the former track on the dirt or something?

A few well placed cement blocks could very well save the city untold amounts as opposed to being sued by some fool who happened to get in and onto the track and hurt themselves.
